You can buy this private island in upstate New York for less than a million dollars
Every New Yorker has at some point considered leaving everything behind and moving to the backwoods or a remote island far from the bellow of ambulance sirens and construction noise.
That dream could very soon become a reality: a 97-acre private island in upstate New York was listed for less money than it costs to buy a condo in most New York City neighborhoods.
RECOMMENDED: NYC is officially the richest city in the world
Campbell Island, located on the Hudson River in the outskirts of Albany, is being sold for an impressively low $700,000.
As you might have imagined, though, there’s a catch. The person selling it, Jeanne Casatelli, told Gothamist that accessing the area can get complicated because of live railroad tracks that connect Campbell Island to the mainland. On top of that, the destination is across from a nature preserve, which will make developing it a challenge (if not impossible).
That means that whoever purchases the island will most likely have to deal with a lot of bureaucracy and leave the area basically as is.
On the plus side, though, Campbell Island boasts some great natural features, including beautiful beaches, a cove and a dock permit. On top of that, you’d be able to enjoy views of the New York State Capitol and the historic village of Castleton-on-Hudson. Bonus points: you will get to tell everyone that you own an island.
If you do decide to dig into your wallet to buy the island, there’s plenty to do in the area: Campbell Island is about a 20-minute car ride from Albany, or 40 minutes from the Catskills, which is filled with great restaurants and boutique hotels. Once you get tired of all the calm, you can drive three hours south to get back to New York City.
