Washington Square Park Has Its First Art Installation Since 2017— And It’s A Massive Disco Ball
New York City is covered with outdoor art that always seem to catch the eye, and a new installation has popped up in Washington Square Park!
As of January 9th, a brand new sculpture by artist Ryan Van De Hout called Reflect Everything, 2023 proudly sits just east of Garibaldi Plaza in Washington Square Park.
The installation is a massive disco ball (7-foot by 7-foot by 10-foot to be exact) that looks incredibly futuristic—almost to the point of a space satellite.
New Yorkers are invited to “explore the tension between the familiar and the unknown” by walking around the installation and checking out the polished steel panels that reflect and refract its surroundings to create mesmerizing patterns that change with the light and the movement.

“I think that public art can create space for a much needed pause in your day,” says the artist. “As you approach the installation, you see yourself fragment and you almost disappear into the landscape. Each individual mirror becomes a framing device for the world, and people get to navigate that framing themselves.”
If you’re in Downtown Manhattan be sure to check it out, and even bookmark a special event on January 26th at 3:00pm, when the artist will be on site at the installation alongside a performance by Gino Aro.
