Can you guess the median age of a New Yorker? The answer might surprise you! Though NYC is home to many higher educational opportunities (more than 120 institutions) the typical New Yorker is not of college age. In fact, the median age of a New Yorker is approximately 38 years old, according to Census data.
We all know living in NYC isn’t the most affordable lifestyle. Therefore, it makes sense why the average age is one that someone might already be well established. The median household income is approximately $74,694, with 41.4% obtaining a bachelor’s degree or higher.
The data is synonymous with the U.S. population trending older than ever before. In 1980, the median age of Americans was 30. As of 2023, it’s now over 38. The rising median age can be accredited to low birthrates that experienced a significant drop during the time of the coronavirus pandemic, reports the New York Times.
And with this climbing median age, at least NYC was recently deemed one of the best places to retire in the country.
As a state, New York‘s median age is 40. Yet, states like Maine (44.8) and New Hampshire (43.3) have an even higher median age. The youngest state according to Census data is Utah with a median age of 31.9 years old.
