Jojo’s Ventures
There’s more to New York City than just “the city”
Staten Island Tours
Richmond County
Often referred to as the “forgotten borough, Staten Island (which translates to States in Dutch) has an unheralded importance to the development of New York City. Many of the affluent families responsible for the industrial accomplishments of the city resided here: The Vanderbilts (who built Grand Central Terminal), Antonio Meucci (patented the telephone) and Alice Austen (noted pioneering photographer and journalist).
You will learn about and visit the origins of founding neighborhoods which contributed to a lot of the nation’s first: Snug Harbor (the first home and hospital for retired seamen), Tompkinsville (one of first residential communities on the Island) and Sandy Ground (the oldest African-American enclave in NYC). Staten Island is mostly accessible via ferry so it would be quite the “venture” to start. Each neighborhood has its own identity, culture and historical significance.
