Severe Thunderstorms May Pummel NYC With Hail & Damaging Winds Tonight

Between last week’s scorching heat wave and the constant Red Alerts and Air Quality Alerts us New Yorkers have been going through it with the weather–and the crazy forecasts aren’t stopping yet!

A severe thunderstorm may be heading to NYC tonight, Wednesday, June 26th.

The National Weather Service says showers and thunderstorms are expected to move through tonight, bringing with them damaging winds and the possibility of large hail. Strong wind gusts in excess of 58 mph could damage trees and power lines and result in scattered power outages.

As with any thunderstorm, brief, minor flooding is possible, and the NWS says localized instances of flash flooding cannot be ruled out.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has placed New York City at a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather threat.

As of now the NWS says the thunderstorm can occur any time between 3 pm through 11 pm tonight, Wednesday, June 26th. For the NYC metro area the greatest severe thunderstorm threat is during the evening rush.

FOX Weather Meteorologist Bob Van Dillen stated:

It’s going to hang in there overnight, and then by tomorrow (Thursday), we still have the showers out there for your early-morning commute. Things clear out just a little bit. Then it gets unsettled for the weekend.
