Penn Station’s Newest Art Installations Breathe Life Into Moynihan Train Hall
Art at Amtrak, a public art program that highlights work from New York and New Jersey artists within Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall, has just unveiled two new installations.
Artists Shoshanna Weinberger and David Rios Ferreira are enriching Moynihan Train Hall for the program’s fourth installment, while taking over Derrick Adams’ previous, six-month installation which will now be featured as an animation above the main concourse.
David Rios Ferreira’s Get Carried Away, You Have the Right can be seen across the four pillars at the Amtrak rotunda at Penn Station. He successfully integrates the past and the present with “temporal beings” that combine everything from cartoons and animation to 18th-century etchings and pre-colonial glyphs.
As commuters exit the rotunda, they’ll be privy to a “celestial gateway” that begs onlookers to reflect on their place in history and question what lies ahead for the future. Keep your eyes peeled for vintage Amtrak café menus, ticket stubs and route brochures within the piece.
In conjunction, Shoshanna Weinberger’s Traveling Along Horizons covers the Amtrak 8th Avenue concourse columns in colors of the sunrise and sunset. She explores her Afro-Caribbean-American identity, along with the time between sunrise and sunset, through stripe patterns that symbolize societal division and measured time in terms of hours, days and months.
She used her reoccurring muses to depict marginalized bodies to “represent our collective consciousness within measured time – moving in and out of public spaces within societies everywhere.”
Art at Amtrak, curated by Debra Simon Art Consulting and produced by Common Ground Arts, intends “to energize trips through the Western Hemisphere’s busiest train station in the most creative city in the world.”
“The addition of multimedia artwork on Moynihan Train Hall’s digital screens is a natural next step in expanding the program’s footprint, highlighting the exceptional talent of artists across New York City and New Jersey and improving the customer experience,” said Amtrak Vice President, Northeast Corridor Service Line Jina Sanone.
