Earlybirds is a dance party for women who say ‘f*ck you, middle age’

Earlybirds is a dance party for women who say 'f*ck you, middle age'

It’s 8pm at the club. Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” blares from the speakers. The crowd goes wild, jumping up and down and scream-signing the lyrics. You toast with the people on your left, you high five with the group on your right—and they’re all women. This is Earlybirds, “a dance party for ladies who got shit to do in the morning,” and it’s coming to New York City this month after nearly a dozen sold-out events in Chicago.

Earlybirds Club, a dance party for women, trans and non-binary folks, starts at 6pm and ends at 10pm because, as co-founder Laura Baginski tells Time Out, “people our age need their sleep.” But that doesn’t mean they want to miss the party, and the party’s coming to NYC on Nov 15 at Parkside Lounge on the Lower East Side and Nov 16 at Shapeshifter Lab in Park Slope. A nationwide expansion is in the works.

At age 49, Baginski fondly remembers going dancing in her 20s and staying out late. Now, she has “no interest in leaving my house at 10pm to start my night,” but she missed dancing and missed having fun nights out with her friends.

She wanted to create a new nightlife experience, one that didn’t include being around “a bunch of cis dudes.” Instead, she wanted to create a completely different event that would fit her life and the lives of her peers better. So Baginski brought the idea to her friend Susie Lee, and Earlybirds bloomed in early 2024. The concept went viral and sold out quickly.

“There is something about being in a room full of women that feels really freeing,” Baginski says.

The parties offer a space for attendees to dance, let loose, be silly and “tap into that person maybe you’ve forgotten,” Baginski says.

There is something about being in a room full of women that feels really freeing.

“It’s very freeing and it’s so fun,” she says. “It’s just joy.”

Attendees typically range in age from 35–65, and Baginski emphasizes that Earlybirds is a safe space for trans and non-binary people. At the events, people have shared how much they needed the experience.

While the event is a blast, it is also deeply meaningful.

“Being a middle aged woman, you kind of feel forgotten by society,” Baginski says. “Your outlets for fun are, like, yoga classes and book clubs. Fuck that, I’ve got way more life in me.”

Seeing a gap in the offerings for women, the duo sprang into action to create this space.

We’re part of a movement where we’re saying, ‘fuck you, middle age.’

“We’re part of a movement where we’re saying, ‘fuck you, middle age.’ We’re here having a blast. We can still do it. We’re not going quietly into the nightlife pasture.”

One World Observatory will be transformed into a magical ONEderland

One World Observatory will be transformed into a magical ONEderland

It’s about that time of year again! One World Observatory just announced the return of their yearly holiday tradition, the ONEderland experience where winter-lovers can take in the iconic view of Manhattan from this redesigned, snug observatory.

Instead of seeking shelter in the North Pole, you can find comfort from the cold at the top of the country’s tallest skyscraper. In this ONEderland, it’s encouraged to snap photos of the city down below, cuddle up in the observatory’s chalet atmosphere or snag a season-special confection from the building’s One Dine Restaurant

RECOMMENDED: The cozy igloos at Bryant Park are back for the season today

Previous years of ONEderland at One World Observatory have seen wooden sleighs, Adirondack chairs and gingerbread trees amongst the astounding snowscape of lower Manhattan. For those who adore the snowy mountain tops but are past their skiing or snowboarding days, this might be the next best thing.

If you still haven’t gotten enough of a holiday activity fix, One World Observatory has you covered. The ONEderland experience is teaming up with The Oculus’ Winter Whirl roller rink to provide a discounted ticket admission bundle for anyone who is hesitant about ice skating. The bundle, which includes admission to the roller rink, costs $63 for adults and $52 for children.

After a pandemic hiatus, the festive experience returned full-force in 2022. This year, it runs from Wednesday, November 20 until Sunday, January 5, so even after the new year, you can still immerse yourself in the winter spirit. ONEderland opens each day at 9am and remains open until 9pm.

The Weather In NYC Might Finally Be Getting Colder, But Now There’s A Red Flag Warning

The weather in NYC has been unseasonably warm, In fact, it was one of the driest Octobers on record and the warmest Halloween since 1946. Even though we’re due for a typical November chill, we now have red flag warnings to contend with.

Temperatures and humidity dipped considerably on Friday, November 8th, from a nearly 80-degree week, but meteorologists revealed that the tristate area is under red flag warnings after only  0.01 inch of rainfall last month — a drought that kickstarted in September.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, every county within the tristate area is now under at least moderate drought conditions, and NYC issued a drought watch is early November.

“We encourage all New Yorkers to take this drought watch seriously and conserve water where you can. While water conservation is always essential, it is particularly crucial during extended dry periods, such as those experienced in New York state throughout this fall,” said Chief of Staff and Extreme Weather Coordinator Camille Joseph Varlack.

New Yorkers should be limiting their time in the shower, turning off faucets when they’re not in use, and fixing leaks in a timely manner, among other efforts.

As far as the temperature goes, we’re expected to see Saturday and Sunday in the mid to low 50s, according to the Weather Channel’s 10-day forecast. Things will stay in the 50s next week, and perhaps we could potentially see showers on Thursday, November 14th, though we’ll need a considerable amount of precipitation before we break this dry spell.

Be cautious with your water usage this weekend, and as always, stay safe.
