We know we’re not the only one checking out the New York fall foliage report…because we’re planning out our fall getaways already! With the leaves starting to change colors in the coming weeks, those cozy Airbnbs and wellness retreats that make the season so snug are already on the forefront of our minds!

1. The Berkshires, MA

Although New York’s fall foliage is set to be better than New England’s this year, the beauty of The Berkshires is undeniable. Tourists from around the country flock to the mountainous area, and we’re lucky enough that’s it only a mere 3 hours from NYC! Check out some itinerary options below:

• Hike Minnewaska State Park: With over 50 miles of trails, this park offers stunning views of fall foliage, perfect for hiking, biking, and rock climbing. There’s also plenty of secret waterfalls, lakes, and cliffs to sniff out too
• Explore Historic Huguenot Street: Step back in time on this 10-acre site featuring stone houses from the 1700s. In October, they do candlelit ghost tours that bring the area’s history to life with spooky tales
• Visit Robibero Family Vineyards: Spend an afternoon with a glass of wine in hand as you taste test local flavors at this family-friendly vineyard
• Apple Picking at Jenkins-Lueken Orchards: Experience classic fall fun by picking apples or pumpkins at this orchard with over 500 apple trees

Over the past few months, union carpenters and contractors have been hitting the ground across New York City, standing with our communities to help build a brighter, more affordable future for everyone. With rents rising seven times faster than wages, our communities need support to ensure that New York remains affordable. This challenge requires a holistic approach, and we’re committed to tackling it on multiple fronts. While we continue advocating for good jobs with fair pay and quality benefits that allow workers to afford to live in the city they build, we recognize that building an affordable city doesn’t just happen on job sites—it starts in the neighborhoods where we live and work.

That’s why we’ve been proud to take part in a series of back-to-school drives and community events, ensuring that the next generation of kids is set up for success. These efforts are a direct extension of our commitment to uplifting New York and making it affordable for all. By providing essential school supplies, we’re not only easing the financial burden on families but also investing in the future of our communities.

In the Bronx, we were on the front lines of four major back-to-school events, distributing over 760 book bags and school supply kits to families in need. These efforts underscore our belief that no child should start the school year at a disadvantage. By providing basic school necessities, we’re investing in the future of our communities and helping to level the playing field for young students.

In Queens, we hosted a back-to-school giveaway in Maspeth, distributing 100 book bags and school kits to ensure kids have the tools they need to confidently start the school year. Additionally, we organized an event in Astoria, where we handed out 250 more book bags and supplies, then headed to Forest Hills to donate 72 school supply kits to students in need. These efforts highlight the importance of coming together with community members to support families and demonstrate our commitment to the future of the next generation.

Brooklyn was also a major focus for us over the past few months. At Kaiser Park in Coney Island, we participated in a back-to-school event, providing 100 students with backpacks and supplies. We also took part in a Family Fun Day at Canarsie Park, celebrating with local families while distributing essential items to help kids start the school year strong. Additionally, at Corona Plaza, we handed out 300 backpacks to students preparing for the new school year.

Aside from helping set students up for success, these drives offered us an opportunity to collaborate with leading organizations and elected officials across the city to give back to our communities. Some of our partners included organizations like Queens Public Library, Forest Hills Stadium, MetroPlusHealth, NYU Langone, Brooklyn Library, ICNA Relief, and elected officials from the State Senate, Assembly, and City Council. These moments of collaboration help us better advocate for the communities in which we live and work. Tackling affordability and building New York’s best is a team effort, and these events provide a venue to discuss issues and opportunities, connect with the community, and hear directly from them about what they need to thrive.

These past few months have been a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we come together. As union carpenters and contractors, we’re not only committed to building New York’s skyline—we’re dedicated to building thriving communities. Across all the boroughs, we’ve been there for the next generation, ensuring they have the resources and support they need to succeed long-term. After all, building a more affordable New York starts on the ground, with our kids and their future.

The MTA unveiled the newest capital plan on Wednesday, a proposal with goals to help modernize mass transit over the course of the next several years. Totaling just north of over $68 billion dollars, the proposed solution is not to necessarily prioritize new rail lines, but instead upkeep existing transportation and maintaining the somewhat “status quo.”

“There are assets within this system that are in real danger of failure,” Jamie Torres-Springer, the MTA’s president of construction and development, said at a press briefing Tuesday.

In terms of the proposed plan, there are several key improvements they have their eyes set on, see them below:

• Purchasing 2,000 new modern railcars
• Modernizing and replacing 75+ miles of signals (Broadway N, Q, R, W line, the Liberty and Rockaway A, S lines, and the Nassau J, Z lines)
• Upgrading transit hub maintenance facilities, including Livonia Shop and the 240 St Shop
• 60+ stations to be made ADA-accessible and 45 subway station elevators to be replaced
• 150+ stations upgraded with customer communications and enhanced security cameras
• 10 stations will be fully renovated
• Platform fencing will be installed at 100 stations
• Building the The Interborough Express (IBX), a new rapid transit service between Brooklyn and Queens
• Purchasing 500 zero-emissions buses as part of mission to achieve a zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040
• Renewing power systems
• Installing modern fare gates
• Rebuilding the Grand Central Artery, which carries 98% of all MetroNorth service
• Combat flooding in the subway for 20+ stations
• Upgrading Hudson Line infrastructure to combat climate change, sea-level rise and intense rainstorms

“After years of underinvestment, more than 90 percent of this proposed plan – the largest in MTA history – focuses on bringing the system to a state of good repair. These investments are necessary to serve the following generations and the future of the region’s economy, environment and social and economic equity,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber.

In terms of next steps, the MTA Board is scheduled to vote on the capital plan during its meeting on September 25. If approved, the plan must be submitted to the MTA Capital Program Review Board by October 1, which will have 30 days to review and approve it.

From there, the MTA plans to launch a series of open houses in mid-October throughout the New York region along with a public education campaign to engage and inform New Yorkers about the capital plan.

If you’re a fan of flea markets, then BQ Flea, which is making its debut in Brooklyn in October, should be on your radar right now.

Curated by the people behind the beloved and renown Brooklyn Flea, which takes place under the Manhattan Bridge in Dumbo, BQ Flea will be open from 10am until 5pm every Sunday in October on Meeker Avenue between Union Avenue and Lorimer Street, right under the BQE. If all goes well, the flea market plans to return on a weekly basis in 2025, so this is your chance to feel out the vibes. 

The BQ Flea is currently seeking local artists, entrepreneurs, food vendors and vintage sellers of furniture, rugs, lighting, housewares or any similar items to apply to be part of the offerings. In order to do so, you will have to submit a description of what your business is about in 500 words or less and include some photos. You can access the application here.
