What makes ‘We call it Performing Arts’ different?

Over the course of 60 minutes, audiences are reintroduced to the magic of timeless art forms in an innovative way. From start to finish, these performances manage to remain faithful to the art form’s cultural roots while giving them an intriguingly unconventional spin.

Take ‘We call it Ballet‘ for example. As they have done for over 100 years, ballerinas pirouette and plié to the stirring sounds of Sleeping Beauty, only at this show, they literally light up the stage with magnificent ensembles completely illuminated by LED lights. What’s more, at ‘We call it Flamenco’ and ‘We call it A Cappella’, the stages are adorned with a gorgeous display of flowers, elevating these live-music performances to magnificently floral heights.

Doughnuttery’s bite-sized doughnut shop is coming to Dumbo

Doughnuttery’s bite-sized doughnut shop is coming to Dumbo

For over a decade, Doughnuttery’s bite-sized doughnuts have taken our taste buds for a ride. Getting its start at Chelsea Market, the doughnut shop quickly became a local favorite with flavors like buttery caramel to peanut butter and grape jelly. Twelve years later, Doughnuttery is now all around the world, with locations in Utah and Wisconsin, plus an international outpost in Chile.

But showing love for its hometown, these pint-sized wonders have found a new home in Dumbo at Time Out Market New York.

RECOMMENDED: The 15 best donut shops in NYC

Opening shop next week, Doughnuttery comes with a tagline: “Hot. Fresh. Uniquely Sugared.” If you don’t know, these mini doughnuts keep things fresh with a dizzying array of sugary combinations and dipping sauces to boot.

Behind the dough is owner Evan Feldman. While Feldman currently doles out thousands of doughnut holes daily, he wasn’t always in the baking biz. Previously, Feldman had worked in the finance industry for over 10 years. After losing his job during the financial crash in 2008, he took it as an opportunity to explore something new.

“I wasn’t exactly happy where I was. It wasn’t a fulfilling career for me,” he tells me. “I figured if I’m not going to do it now, I’m never going to do it.”

Coming from a family that cooks, including a brother who is a professional chef to in-laws who owned a bakery, Feldman soon found himself in the restaurant industry. A big sweets guy himself, he decided to pick the versatile treat: the doughnut.

“Doughnuts have always been a part of American history and our culture,” he says. And while doughnuts are cemented in American cuisine, Feldman wanted to use his product to reach various palates from across the world. “Every culture has their version of fried dough.”

Riffing off local and international flavors, Doughnuttery was born. Using a cake doughnut as its base, the shop boasts a whopping 25 flavors thanks to its unique sugar blends. Going beyond traditional glazed and powdered (though those are good, too), doughnuts are shaken with cardamom and orange zest to maple and bacon. Trotting around the globe, Doughnuttery has a full lineup of international bites. Take for example the Paris Time. A staple since day one, this sugar blend includes flavors of lavender, pistachio and vanilla. Meanwhile, the Chai Masala also comes with a blend of black tea. As if that wasn’t enough indulgence, Dougnuttery has a full lineup of sauces primed and ready for dipping, ranging from raspberry balsamic to a savory but sweet beer caramel.

“We cast a wide net to appeal to different tastes, different palettes, so there’s something for everybody,” he says.

And while Doughnuttery has operated in Manhattan for over 12 years, this will be the first Brooklyn location for the doughnut brand. Feldman is more than ready to fill a hole in Brooklyn’s doughnut scene (pun intended).

“We’re super excited to be in Brooklyn,” he adds. “We want to create a bond with locals and become a place where they can come and bring their kids, grab a cup of coffee and have some doughnuts. Hopefully, we can play a part in sweetening their day.”

The Top 20 Most Popular Businesses Of All Time Have Been Revealed & Two Are In NYC

New York City is one of the most unique places in the world, filled to the brim with many things that are iconically “New York”–some of those things being its businesses. And whether we’re talking cultural landmarks or culinary hotspots there’s no denying that NYC has certainly made a name for itself in the broader scheme of things, and Yelp is taking notice.

Yelp recently released their 20th iteration of the 20 Most Popular Businesses of All Time, identifying businesses in the U.S. and ranking them based on a number of factors including the total volume and ratings of reviews and photos, and two of them are here in NYC!

First up on the list is the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Us New Yorkers love the Met’s roof garden and Met Date Nights (among many other things), but beyond those two the ranking writes:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is a favorite among Yelp users for its stunning exhibits and breathtaking architecture. Reviewers rave about the beautifully curated galleries and often highlight the friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Ironically, however, on Yelp’s separate ranking of the 20 Most Photographed Businesses of All Time, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is not first on the list but seventh…something we have to say we disagree with. On the flip side, the Met is the only NYC business on this list.

Ranking fourth, New York City’s next business on Yelp’s most popular business list is the Central Park Conservancy. The ranking writes:

Central Park Conservancy is a favorite for its lush landscapes, iconic landmarks, and serene atmosphere. Yelp users love the well-maintained trails and picturesque spots for picnics.

If you ask us, we also love Central Park for its Loeb Boathouse, zoo, Bow Bridge, spring cherry blossoms, and fall foliage–plus, did you know there’s a hidden part of the park that’s full of enchanting waterfalls?!

Rounding out the top ten in the ranking are as follows:

1. The Metropolitan Museum of Art – New York, NY

2. Balboa Park – San Diego, CA

3. The Getty Center – Los Angeles, CA

4. Central Park Conservancy – New York, NY

5. The Huntington – San Marino, CA

6. Chihuly Garden and Glass – Seattle, WA

7. Gangnam Asian BBQ Dining – Las Vegas, NV

8. Howlin’ Ray’s – Los Angeles, CA

9. Kualoa Ranch – Kaneohe, HI

10. Marugame Udon – Honolulu, HI

Looks like we’ll have to pay our friends over in Los Angeles and Las Vegas a visit!

Swifties, this is A Musical Brunch Tribute

Swiftie Brunch is the ultimate, adults-only Taylor-themed feast, where every bite is a “Love Story” in itself. At the start of the event, you’ll take a fun quiz to determine which era fits you best. Because Taylor eras are kind of like the Harry Potter houses; they can tell a lot about your personality and about where you’re at in life at the moment. Then, you can groove to Tay Tay’s most iconic hits from “Lover” to “Fortnight”, sing along and meet fellow fans between each food course. Obviously, you can’t leave the brunch without your friendship bracelets that can only strengthen your bonds within the Swiftie community.

Your Eras-themed Feast

Now, we’re not giving away any surprises, but what we can say is that each course is inspired by and named after some of Taylor’s songs. It is a Taylor Swift tribute brunch, after all! Although the menu is subject to change depending on the seasonal produce, you can expect to savor delicious bites like the Lavender Haze Açai Bowl, Enchanted Eggs Benedict, or the Folkl-Oreo Cheesecake (if you have a sweet tooth), as you wash them down with refreshing cocktails or mocktails.

Why Taylor Swift?

Wait, you don’t know what Miss Americana’s cultural impact and musical legacy is? As if! She’s redefined the art of subtly shading exes and mastered the skill of making lemonade when life gives you lemons. All you need to do is shake it off! Whatever challenge she’s faced in her personal life, she’s proven that if you sing it right, your ex will be begging to be part of your next album. And if that wasn’t enough, at 34, her wide-ranging talent has won her 12 Grammys and earned her over 200 million album sales worldwide.

Whether you’re feeling “22” or just want to experience something “Enchanted”, have some Taylor-inspired delights at Swiftie Brunch in NYC. It’s the ultimate Taylor-inspired food extravaganza and you won’t want to miss out.

On October 19, there are two brunch sessions that will take place at Arlo Williamsburg, formerly known as The Williamsburg Hotel, at 11:00 am or 1:30 pm, so you can choose the one that best suits your schedule.

Stevie Wonder Aims to Help “Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart” With 10-City Tour Leading Up to Presidential Election

Love is definitely in need of love today, and one of its most staunch and steadfast purveyors, legendary and visionary artist Stevie Wonder, is going on the road once again to offer just that.

Wonder announced today he will be playing select dates in October across 10 cities in a call for “joy over anger, kindness over recrimination, peace over war” during this most contentious election season in the United States.

As a special thank you to those in communities who are already working tirelessly to fix our nation’s broken heart, Wonder will be offering a designated amount of complimentary tickets to them.

This mini-tour, titled “Sing Your Song! As We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart,” is produced by Wonder Productions and promoted by AEG Presents in partnership with Free Lunch.

The tour kicks off  Tuesday, October 8 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, PA, with stops in New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Greensboro, Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis before concluding Wednesday, October 30 at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI.

Wonder recently appeared at the Democratic National Convention, where he said “I know the importance of action… Now is the moment to understand where we are and what it will take to win: win the broken hearts, win the disenchanted, win the angry spirits — now is the time.”

Wonder continued: “This is the moment to remember when you tell your children where you were and what you did… We must choose courage over complacency. It is time to geeeeetttup and go vote!” before performing  his 1973 classic “Higher Ground.”
