INTRODUCING: BAYLANDER STEEL BEACH 2023

Harlem Bespoke:  The very popular Baylander Steel Beach lounge on the former naval ship at the West Harlem Piers on far West 125th Street wrapped up a second successful season last November when the weather got cold but now things will be warming up since Spring 2023 has finally arrived.  So when will everyone be on deck this season?It is still a little too cold so far and the official website has now confirmed that everything is up and running already. This new uptown business opened during the pandemic but thrived thanks to overwhelming local support and more fun days are sure to come at the this historic Harlem site.  More on the Baylander Steel Beach can be found in our past post: LINK

VOLUNTEER: TRASH PROJECT AT ST. NICHOLAS PARK

Harlem Bespoke:  Another clean up day with Friends of St. Nicholas Park and local volunteers to help out for a monthly cleanup.  Mark those calendars and pitch in to help beautify one of uptown’s beloved parks.

Saturday, May 20th, 11:00AM-1:00PM, The Trash Project monthly volunteer cleanup at St. Nicholas Park, meet at the plaza in front of the James Baldwin Lawn at 135th Street and St. Nicholas. Community activism for Harlem’s green spaces have been a labor of love over the past decade and it is pretty cool to see the movement growing stronger each year.  More details about the Trash Project on Instagram: LINK

SEE: 1-54 CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ART FAIR 2023

Harlem Bespoke: Friday-Sunday, May 19th-21st 11:00AM to 7:00PM, 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, at Malt House in the Manhattanville Factory District, 439 West 127th Street by Amsterdam Avenue.  The Harlem location of Gavin Brown in Manhattanville shuttered in 2020 and now the West Harlem location in the old brewery building will be used for the occasional pop-up exhibit for New Yorkers to check out in the unique uptown space.
Held annually across three continents, in London, New York and Marrakech, 1-54 is the leading global event series dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. This year’s New York iteration features dozens of galleries hailing from across Africa, Europe and the United States: LINK

MOVIES UNDER THE STARS AT MARCUS GARVEY PARK

Harlem Bespoke: Celebrate Juneteenth weekend in Harlem with a FREE, outdoor screening of Oscar-winning documentary SummeGrab a blanket and come enjoy a movie in a neighborhood park or playground! This summer, NYC Parks and The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will host family-friendly movie showings across the five boroughs. 

Thursday, May 18th, 8:00PM-11:00PM,  Judas and the Black Messiah screening at Marcus Garvey Park, 122nd Street and Mount Morris Park West, FREE to the public.  FBI informant William O’Neal (LaKeith Stanfield) infiltrates the Illinois Black Panther Party and is tasked with keeping tabs on their charismatic leader, Chairman Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya). A career thief, O’Neal revels in the danger of manipulating both his comrades and his handler, Special Agent Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons).  More details on the city parks official website: LINK
