SEE: 1-54 CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ART FAIR 2023

Harlem Bespoke: Friday-Sunday, May 19th-21st 11:00AM to 7:00PM, 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, at Malt House in the Manhattanville Factory District, 439 West 127th Street by Amsterdam Avenue.  The Harlem location of Gavin Brown in Manhattanville shuttered in 2020 and now the West Harlem location in the old brewery building will be used for the occasional pop-up exhibit for New Yorkers to check out in the unique uptown space.
Held annually across three continents, in London, New York and Marrakech, 1-54 is the leading global event series dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. This year’s New York iteration features dozens of galleries hailing from across Africa, Europe and the United States: LINK

MOVIES UNDER THE STARS AT MARCUS GARVEY PARK

Harlem Bespoke: Celebrate Juneteenth weekend in Harlem with a FREE, outdoor screening of Oscar-winning documentary SummeGrab a blanket and come enjoy a movie in a neighborhood park or playground! This summer, NYC Parks and The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will host family-friendly movie showings across the five boroughs. 

Thursday, May 18th, 8:00PM-11:00PM,  Judas and the Black Messiah screening at Marcus Garvey Park, 122nd Street and Mount Morris Park West, FREE to the public.  FBI informant William O’Neal (LaKeith Stanfield) infiltrates the Illinois Black Panther Party and is tasked with keeping tabs on their charismatic leader, Chairman Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya). A career thief, O’Neal revels in the danger of manipulating both his comrades and his handler, Special Agent Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons).  More details on the city parks official website: LINK

NEW SPRING EXHIBIT AT CHILDRENS ART CARNIVAL

Harlem Bespoke: The Children’s Art Carnival started in 1969 by the Museum of Modern Art as part of an outreach program for youth in the community and now is also showcasing emerging local artists with exhibits at the Hamilton Heights townhouse. 

Forays in to Fantasy exhibit at The Children’s Art Carnival, 62 Hamilton Place by 144th Street.  The Children’s Art Carnival will celebrating a new spring exhibit featuring imaginary world building through a black lens.  Regular viewing time after the opening reception will be from Tuesdays through Sundays, 12:00 Noon-7:00PM.  More details and updates on the Children’s Art Carnival can be found on the official Instagram account: LINK

Funeral plans announced for longtime Harlem politician Bill Perkins

Funeral services for late Harlem politician Bill Perkins are set for Wed., May 24 and Thurs., May 25 at First Corinthian Baptist Church (1912 Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard).

A viewing will take place on Thursday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the church. On Friday, there will be a final viewing at 9 a.m. followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. A repast is being hosted at Harlem Tavern (2153 Frederick Douglass Boulevard) from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The family is holding a private burial.

Perkins’ funeral will be live streamed.

Perkins died at his Harlem home on May 16. He served in the City Council representing Harlem’s 9th District from 1998 to 2005 and again from 2017 to 2021. He represented the 30th District in Harlem in the State Senate from 2007 to 2017.

A prayer vigil for Perkins was held Wednesday evening in Harlem at the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building. Mayor Eric Adams ordered all flags be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday in his honor.
