NYC’s First Soccer Stadium Is One Step Closer To Making Its Way To Queens
Nearly one year after Sterling Equities and New York City Football Club (NYCFC) unveiled a set of renderings of the soccer stadium heading to Queens, the stadium has won a key backing and embarked on its next steps.
The stadium–which was originally supposed to be constructed in the South Bronx near Yankee Stadium–is set to be built in the Willets Point neighborhood of Queens with a projected completion date of 2027, and back in December 2023 Community Board 7 overwhelmingly voted to approve the project.
And, as of January 10th (2024), Queens Borough President Donovan Richards has officially recommended the approval of phase two of the stadium–with conditions.
Conditions laid out in Richards’ recommendation include:
- A written statement that Phase 2 affordability levels be similar to Phase 1 levels (i.e. over 50% of the 1,400 units must be at or below 80% of the Area Median Income)
- A full list of Community Benefits the Applicant team has promised throughout this ULURP process so far
- A signed letter of commitment (including metrics, dates, or milestones)
The stadium, to be used by Major League Soccer’s New York City Football Club, will have 25,000 seats and is expected to be the first electric stadium in professional soccer.
It’s also, however, only a part of the overall Willets Point redevelopment project, which also includes 1,400 units of affordable housing, a 250-room hotel, 80,000 square feet of commercial retail space, nearly 3 acres of public open space, and more.
With Richards’ approval now in hand, it’s now the City Planning Commission’s turn to review and weigh in on the development that includes the $780 million stadium.
