NYC Now Has Its First Official Disc Golf Course
While pickleball takes NYC by storm–transforming Central Park’s Wollman Rink into a pickleball paradise and 12 brand new pickleball courts set to open beneath the Brooklyn Bridge–there’s another sport working to make its presence known in NYC: Disc Golf.
Never heard of Disc Golf is? Well you’re going to want to change that as NYC now has its first official Disc Golf course!
QNS writes that the Disc Golf course has found its home in Highland Park, giving Queens residents and Brooklynites a chance to learn a new outdoor sport this summer!

The game is similar to pickleball and has rules that mirror golf in a way, though players compete to land a disc into the delegated basket with chain netting in as few throws as possible.
According to QNS, NYC Parks Administrator Portia Cook-Dyrenforth stated:
The thing about Disc Golf that I think fits so well at Highland Park is that it really blends with the landscape…[Borough commissioner at NYC Parks Jacqueline Langsam] challenged us in that she wanted to make sure this was something the community was open to.
Moreover, QNS writes that NYC Disc Golf Association co-founders Alex Bender and Alex Hoyle had a lot to do with the Disc Golf course making its way to NYC. They told QNS that “their passion for the sport is what brought them together” and, at the same time, they “realized there was a need for [disc golf] courses across the city.”
Bender and Hoyle wanted the course to be easily accessible and affordable, and their perseverance in introducing disc golf to the community and answering community needs is what made the creation of the course possible.

Hoyle also communicated to QNS how disc golf is more than just a sport or hobby, stating “It’s hard to describe, but the flight of the disc is just like a very magical thing to watch if you get it right. Then on top of that, you start making friends, learning that there’s a community of disc golfers, people that share the same passion.”
The Paul McBeth Foundation (Paul McBeth is a six-time disc golf world champion) told QNS:
With nearly nine million residents in New York City and not a single disc golf course available to play, this project has been a dream of our foundation for a long time.
