NYC Is Under A Winter Operations Advisory: Here’s What To Know
Though Winter Storm Blair has yet to bring any major snowfall to the NYC area, a simple change of course could lead to NYC receiving up to four inches of snow. Therefore, NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) issued a Winter Operations Advisory, effective for January 6, 2025.
What is a Winter Operations Advisory?
To clarify, a Winter Operations Advisory is different from a Snow Alert. The difference between the two lies in the severity of the weather conditions at hand.
For example, a Winter Operations Advisory is a lower-level notification, typically issued when one inch or less of snow is expected. Whereas, a Snow Alert indicates a higher severity when heavy snowfall is expected.
When is the Winter Operations Advisory in effect?
The Winter Operations Advisory is in effect on Monday, January 6th, 2025 from 6am to midnight.
How much snow is NYC supposed to get?
Forecasts estimate no more than an inch of snow to fall over NYC on Monday. However, the DSNY warns that NYC is very close to the “snow line.” This means that any shift in direction of Winter Storm Blair could result in heavy snow for Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island.
Even if no substantial snow falls over NYC, be prepared for nearly sub-zero temperatures all week long.
What is DSNY doing to prepare?
To prepare in advance for any winter conditions, DSNY pre-treated roads and bike lanes with brine on Sunday. As of midnight Monday, thousands of Sanitation Workers were at the ready for the “slim but real possibility” of the storm changing directions. Those workers continue to be on 12-hour shifts for brine and salt operations.
Snow plowing doesn’t commence unless at least two inches of snow have fallen. If that occurs, DSNY has 700 million pounds of salt on deck.
