New York Was One Of The ‘Most Moved From States Of 2023’

Back in July of last year, storage unit comparison site SelfStorage.com found that New York was the fifth state people most wanted to move out of, and apparently there was some truth behind those words.

A recent study from United Van Lines revealed the amount of people moving in and out of each state, and New York’s outbound percentage was higher than its inbound.

And, surprisingly, only a small percentage of people stated high costs as their reason for saying sayonara.

According to the study, New York was the fourth most moved from state in 2023, with 60% of residents moving out. Primary reasons for moving out of New York included:

  • Retirement – 21.90%
  • Health – 3.70%
  • Family – 24.80%
  • Lifestyle – 14.50%
  • Job – 19.30%
  • Cost – 4.80%

And though NYC was recently named one of the best places in the U.S. to retire, the numbers in this study beg to differ. The highest percentage of people who moved out of New York were 65 or older, accounting for 37.90% of outbound residents.

If you ask us, we have a feeling it’s because New Yorkers apparently need more than $1 million to retire comfortably.

So, where is everyone moving? Not too far.

For the third consecutive year the top inbound state was Vermont with a 65% inbound migration rate. Moving to be closer to family (29%) was the main reason behind the relocation, followed by a lifestyle change (20%).

On the flip side, for the sixth consecutive year, more residents moved out of New Jersey than any other state, as 65% of New Jersey moves were outbound. The top motivation for moves out of the state was driven primarily from those looking to retire (27%).
