MTA To Release Limited-Edition Commemorative MetroCards For Hip Hop’s 50th Anniversary
This August marks the 50th anniversary of hip hop, and what better city to celebrate in than the music genre’s birthplace?!
Beyond all of the epic ways NYC is celebrating this major anniversary, the MTA has just announced they will be releasing limited-edition commemorative MetroCards in partnership with Universal Music Enterprises and Hip Hop At 50 – Honoring 50 Years of Hip Hop: A Legacy of Rhythm, Revolution, and Soul.
There will be a total of 80,000 commemorative MetroCards available throughout the subway system. 40,000 of the MetroCards will feature hip hop legends LL COOL J & Pop Smoke, available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis on Saturday, August 5th. Later in the month another 40,000 will be available, featuring Rakim and Cam’ron.
When I first started in Hip-Hop, we were using tokens and then in the 90’s the MetroCard came out. And through the pandemic I remember riding the subway anonymously by myself. Now in 2023 I have my own limited-edition MetroCard in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop. This is a beautiful full circle moment. Hip-Hop is amazing! – LL COOL J
Interested commuters must use MetroCard vending machines to receive the limited-edition cards.
Find the commemorative hip hop cards at the following stations:
- LL Cool J: Forest Hills (beginning August 5 until supplies last)
- Pop Smoke: Canarsie-Rockaway Pkwy and New Lots Av (beginning August 5 until supplies last)
- Rakim: Systemwide (to be released later this month)
- Cam’ron: Systemwide (to be released later this month)
