LaGuardia Jumps From The Worst To Best Mid-Sized Airport In The Country

After consecutively being deemed the worst airport in America, LGA renovation efforts have changed the tide, as the 2023 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Passenger Survey deemed it now the best mid-sized airport in not just the country, but all of North America.

The once horrendous airport despised by most has flipped a complete 180° in the minds of passengers. It was just six years ago when LGA was rated the worst Airport in North America. Now, after its $8 billion makeover, it has received the 2023 Airport Service Quality Award—more specifically, “Best Airport of 25 to 40 Million Passengers in North America” in 2023.

“Taking LaGuardia Airport from worst to best is now more than just an aspiration, it’s an accomplishment that passengers have now resoundingly recognized,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton. “When we started out on our $8 billion transformation of LaGuardia, few believed we could create the world-class airport our region deserves. But the ASQ award proves that seeing is believing.”

The survey follows the first full year all new passenger facilities were operational at LaGuardia, including LGA’s world-class $4 billion Terminal B that was recognized as ‘The Best New Airport In The World’.

Survey respondents were probed about their entire airport experience, honing in on airport cleanliness, airport condition, staff courtesy, quality of concessions, security and other amenities.

The more than 4,200 passengers surveyed gave LGA an overall satisfaction score of 4.24 out of 5. From 2018 (when it was considered the worst airport in North America) to 2023, LGA increased 15% in airport cleanliness, and 21% in overall satisfaction.

“There is no better judge of our new airports than the passengers who use them, which is why the ASQ award for best airport going to LaGuardia is so meaningful,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole. “Across the region, the Port Authority is working with its partners to create the best-in-class experiences that passengers have long deserved at LaGuardia, Newark’s Terminal A and at JFK International.”
