Is A Second Wegmans Opening In Manhattan?
After announcing back in July of 2021 that Rochester-born supermarket Wegmans would be heading to Manhattan for the first time ever, the adored chain finally opened their doors to shoppers this past October. And now, only four months later, there’s whispers that a second Manhattan location may be heading to NYC’s Upper West Side!
According to the New York Post, Wegmans chairman Danny Wegman signed a long-term lease last week for the former Bed Bath & Beyond space at 1932 Broadway between 64th and 65th streets.
A Wegmans representative told The Post:
The space at 1932 Broadway has been leased by Danny Wegman and is a personal investment. At this time, we have no immediate plans to open a store at that location.
The Post added, however, that the lease is guaranteed by Wegmans.
Wegmans representatives added that they were working to secure this uptown lease prior to opening their Astor Place location, though it didn’t become available until after the company committed to the downtown opening.
“At this time, we are continuing to learn from our Astor Place store and will use those learnings moving forward,” the rep added, according to The Post.
Wegmans was founded by brothers Walter and John Wegman in 1916, and they’ve since grown to have more than 100 stores along the east coast. The chain debuted its first-ever NYC location in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in October of 2019, and their long-awaited Manhattan opening was met with a swarm of fans lining up outside with a mission of being the first shoppers.
It’s still unclear as to what’s heading to the former space as permits have yet to be filed.
