Consider her the doyenne of New York’s orange wine scene: Doreen Winkler is the natural wine sommelier and premier expert on orange wine behind the Lower East Side vino mecca Orange Glou, the world’s first and only store dedicated to orange wines. (Wine 101: the orange kind is made with white grapes but in the style of a red, where the skins are kept in contact with the juice after pressing, giving the wine it’s dynamic funk and unique texture.)

And to celebrate Orange Glou’s third birthday, the somm will be pouring out free orange wine for thirsty New Yorkers this weekend.

Orange Glou will have their free anniversary party this Saturday, June 29 from 3pm to 8pm at its downtown storefront (264 Broome St), where Winkler will be pouring more than a dozen unique and rare orange wines from around the world, including Ruth Lewandowski Anos, Julien Altaber Skinbull, Pittnauer Perfect Day and Muller-Koeberle Barrigure Brut Pét-Nat, plus some surprise bottles.

Those amber-hued swills will be paired with unexpected snacks throughout the event: think Cheetos with Fabien Jouves Skin Contact Maceration, an aromatic biodynamic wine from the South of France; or wasabi peas with a rare Portuguese pet-nat Bojo Do Luar Azal that’s also macerated on the skins. At the party, guests can also snag prizes—including T-shirts, glasses, totes, wine openers and candy—with every purchase of at least $35.

The Orange Glou anniversary party kicks off a summer of chef pop-ups and events, including a special collab with SuperVinoBros coming in August. And the shop’s popular, annual Orange Glou Wine Fair is also set to return this November, so stay tuned for boozy details on that one!
