Central Park Sea Lion Escapes Zoo Amidst Heavy Rain

All day, New York City has been pounded with heavy rainfall, leading to transportation closures, event cancellations, and yes, a sea lion on the loose!

Officials announced the escape of a female sea lion from Central Park Zoo during the flooding earlier today.

“A female sea lion at Central Park Zoo was able to swim out of her pool due to flooding of the plaza caused by severe rains in New York City today,” said Jim Breheny, the director of the Bronx Zoo and executive vice president of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Zoos and Aquarium.

Though it made an escape, it never got past the zoo’s secondary perimeter. Zoo staff were monitoring the sea lion while it explored.

Once the water receded a bit, the sea lion had safely returned to its exhibit.

“Animal care staff will continue to monitor the situation through the duration of the weather event,” he noted.

The zoo is closed today due to inclement weather.
