Bronx Medical School Grants Free Tuition For All Students

Medical students at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx were shellshocked after the private school announced that they will be pardoning all students of their tuition from hereafter. The historical initiative is all thanks to a more than generous gift—the largest made to any medical school in the nation—from Ruth L. Gottesman, Ed.D., Chair of the Einstein Board of Trustees and Montefiore Health System board member.

Studying for med school is enough of a stressor, but add tuition to that and it’s no wonder there’s a mental health crisis across college campuses. This “transformational gift” will ensure that no Einstein student will ever after worry about tuition again. It will grant those interested in receiving medical education a degree, who otherwise might not be able to afford it.

This donation radically revolutionizes our ability to continue attracting students who are committed to our mission, not just those who can afford it. Additionally, it will free up and lift our students, enabling them to pursue projects and ideas that might otherwise be prohibitive. We will be reminded of the legacy this historic gift represents each spring as we send another diverse class of physicians out across the Bronx and around the world to provide compassionate care and transform their communities,” said Dr. Yaron Tomer, the Marilyn and Stanley Katz Dean at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

So though all students moving forward will receive free tuition, what does it mean for those in their fourth year at Einstein? Fortunately, those students will be reimbursed for their spring 2024 semesters.

“With this gift, Dr. Gottesman will fund excellence in perpetuity and secure our foundational mission of advancing human health,” said Philip O. Ozuah, M.D., Ph.D., President and CEO of Montefiore Einstein.
