Oprah Winfrey to deliver commencement address at HBCU alma mater

Talk show host, television producer, actress, author, and media proprietor Oprah Winfrey is set to delivery the undergraduate commencement address at her alma mater, the historically Black Tennessee State University (TSU). The ceremony will take place on May 6 in Nashville at Hale Stadium.

“Commencement is always a special time for our students and their families, as it marks a major milestone in our students’ lives and a sign of success for them,” said TSU, Dr. President Glenda Glover. “To have Ms. Winfrey as our speaker will be a life changing moment for graduates and the University. She is someone who has walked the TSU campus as a student, sat in some of the same classroom, and knows first-hand the value of a TSU education.”

Winfrey attended (TSU) on a full scholarship, majoring in communications. While at TSU, Winfrey landed a job at Nashville’s WLAC-TV (now WTVF-TV), where she was both the youngest news anchor and the first black female news anchor. Despite being one credit short of her degree, Winfrey decided to leave school and Nashville to pursue her dream of being a broadcast journalist. However, in 1986, she returned to submit her final paper and officially graduated from TSU.

The commencement ceremony will be live streamed. Click here for more information.

TSU was founded in 1912 and is the only state-funded historically Black university in Tennessee and has over 8,000 students.

Listen: Genias in Music: La Lupe

La Lupe was a force of nature. It was with good reason that the Cuban Afro-Latina songstress from the Bronx was known as the “Queen of Latin Soul.” La Lupe was absolutely unforgettable and in her heyday graced the stage of Carnegie Hall, headlined at The Garden and even starred on Broadway. Genias in Music: La Lupe, by Latino USA, is a fascinating deep dive into the life and career of this important but often misunderstood giant of Latin music. Enjoy!

Back in 2013, Country Club, the popular Dominican soda brand, ran a brilliant ad campaign that featured a group of aliens coming to the Dominican Republic with nefarious intent but end up falling in love with Quisqueya. Enjoy!

Overdose deaths continue to rise | Manhattan Times

The rate of overdose deaths in New York City continues to rise, according to a new report released by the city’s Health Department.

In the first two quarters of 2021, there were 1,233 overdose deaths in New York City, compared to 965 overdose deaths during the same period in 2020, the report said.

“The overdose epidemic is taking one New Yorker from us every four hours, and is a public health crisis that has touched far too many people,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan. “The Health Department is committed to reducing overdose deaths through evidence-based strategies, and continuing to work with peers, community partners and service providers to innovate and save lives.”

According to the report, Harlem and neighborhoods in the Bronx are the areas with the highest rates of opioid deaths.

Between July 2020 and July 2021, those regions had 50 to 95 overdose deaths per 100,000 residents, data showed.

Summer Rising Enrollment is Open!

This summer, DOE and DYCD plan to serve a record number of students through Summer Rising, a free, safe, and fun academic and enrichment program for NYC students currently in grades K-8.

We encourage families to apply early to secure a spot at their preferred location. Enrollment is quick and easy, and it can be completed from any device with an internet connection or by contacting your school’s Parent Coordinator.

This year, families can submit one enrollment per child, so please choose your site carefully. You can enroll at any Summer Rising location with seats available for your child’s grade band (K-5 or 6-8). Many schools will be located in a different building for the summer; if you are unsure where your school will be operating Summer Rising, contact your school or view the building list posted further down on this webpage.

If your child has a 9-digit OSIS (student ID) number, make sure you have it on-hand to complete your enrollment.
