Ponce Bank recently celebrated the graduates of its Bronx, Manhattan, and New Jersey Small Business Bootcamps, part of a series of free programs providing essential business planning, strategies, and tools for growth to local small-business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs, to help them achieve their goals.
During the event, three business owners from the Bronx and three from Manhattan and New Jersey, who previously pitched their business ideas to a panel of judges, were recognized and presented with awards they can use to grow their businesses. The awards are sponsored by Fiserv, a global provider of payments and financial technology, including the Clover point-of-sale and business management platform.

With the support of the Business Outreach Center Network, whose mission is to improve the economic prospects of traditionally underserved groups, including low- and moderate-income entrepreneurs and their communities, Ponce Bank’s Small Business Bootcamp has seen impressive attendance: More than 1,100 people from across the city have completed the Small Business Bootcamp since its launch in 2020.
During the graduation event, the award recipients shared what these funds mean to them and how the experience affected their growth as future business leaders.
“I think a lot of things with smaller businesses, especially coming from places like the Bronx, we just don’t know what resources there are. How can we move our business forward?…The Boot Camp really allowed us to think through what next steps we can take advantage of at each stage,” said Silvestre.
“My involvement gave me a lot of education so that I could lead a successful business, but winning this competition gave me the confidence I need, because people believed in my vision and what I’m trying to do to impact society,” Sudol said.

Some weight-loss diets can leave you starving — and that’s not the goal. While eliminating processed foods from your grocery cart is a great way to lose weight and improve your health (especially ones that are high in empty calories, sugar, and unhealthy fats), what you add to your cart is just as important. Foods that are high in fiber and protein, for example,…

Happy Music Monday, you all! Once again it’s your friend and selector, Marlon West, with another collection for listening and, this time, voting pleasure.
That is unless you are the kind of voter more inclined towards the guy that inspires a playlist featuring Kid Rock and Ted Nugent. Though if you were, I doubt you would be here on GOOD BLACK NEWS.
So, if you are like me, Vice President Kamala Harris’ and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s campaign and the excitement around it is welcome good news.
While some dismiss these heady days as a “sugar rush” and “media honeymoon”, Senior Editor and Correspondent for NPR News, Ron Elving, likened it to what Wall Street brokers call a “relief rally”.
This is coming after months of democrats being in the throes of ill-ease after President Biden’s debate performance. Weeks of record-breaking fundraising and huge rallies, has made for a decidedly more hopeful mood. One that I hope is here to stay.
To that end, here is a collection of tracks inspired by these more heady days to take us through the election season. Some of these songs are taken from the playlist for Harris/Walz rallies, like Mary J. Blige’s “Work That”, Leon Bridges’ “Smooth Sailing’ and, of course, Beyoncé‘s “Freedom”.
While others just seem quite timely again, including Billy Paul’s “Am I Black Enough For You”, The Staple Singers “If You’re Ready (Come Go With Me)”, and Funkadelic’s “One Nation Under A Groove”.
With Governor Walz dedicating a highway to “The Purple One”, there are more than a few Prince tracks thrown in as well.
Marvin Gaye’s groundbreaking album, “What’s Going On/What’s Happening Brother,” released in 1971, remains a powerful voice in the ongoing conversation about social justice and human rights. Among its standout tracks, “What’s Going On/What’s Happening Brother” serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by veterans and marginalized communities. Inspired by Gaye’s brother Frankie, who returned from the Vietnam…
