NYC Considers Banning Smoking On Sidewalks Near Parks

New York City Councilmember, Sandra Ung, recently proposed a new bill that would ban smoking on sidewalks that immediately adjoin parks. This would increase civil penalties for smoking in parks, which is already illegal in NYC.

Smokers would incur a first time violation fee of $50 if caught smoking on a sidewalk next to a park. Subsequent violations would elicit a $200 fine within a year after the first incident.

The Smoke Free Air Act (SFAA) was passed in 2002. This law prohibits smoking (of any substance including both cannabis & tobacco) in workplaces and public spaces, ie. parks. If the newly proposed bill were to be approved, it would expand the SFAA boundaries.

New Yorkers are flocking to the ‘Friends’ apartment to mourn the death of Matthew Perry

New Yorkers are flocking to the 'Friends' apartment to mourn the death of Matthew Perry

Matthew Perry, known for playing the always-funny Chandler Bing on the iconic ’90s TV show Friends, was found dead at the age of 54 at his home in Los Angeles this past weekend.

Although a cause of death has not yet been revealed, Perry, who was discovered in his bathtub unresponsive on Saturday afternoon, had always been open about his battles with drug abuse.

While fans of the actor around the world have taken to social media to pay their respects to the late star, New Yorkers have been flocking to the West Village building that served as the exterior of the legendary apartment that the characters of Friends lived in to mourn the event.

Dozens of signs and flower bouquets have been placed on the southwest corner of Bedford and Grove, near the instantly-recognizable building at 90 Bedford Street.

Here is a collection of images from the scene:

An Exhibit Showcasing 50 Years Worth Of Billy Joel’s Career Is Opening On Long Island

Billy Joel is arguably the most famous musician to hail from Long Island, so it’s only right that an interactive exhibit exploring his music, career, and roots is set to open in the Long Island town of Stony Brook this November.

After nearly a year in the making, the exclusive exhibit, titled Billy Joel- My Life, A Piano Man’s Journey will give fans of the beloved singer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Joel’s life-spanning career, beginning with his roots in Hicksville/Levittown.

The exhibit will showcase over 50 years-worth of Billy Joel’s most cherished items including rare memorabilia, behind-the-scenes video, dozens of awards, rare audio and video recordings, vintage instruments, and historic photos–many of which have been donated by Billy Joel himself and never seen before in public.

The coolest part is that Billy Joel himself had a hand in creating the exhibit.

Ernie Canadeo, LIMEHOF Chairman, stated:

We are thrilled and honored to present the Billy Joel exhibit everyone has been waiting for…Billy has been very cordial and involved in the planning, and it is appropriate the exhibit is on Long Island, where he has long been
identified, written so many songs and lived most of his life. It is a fitting tribute to Long Island’s most successful entertainer and is guaranteed to thrill his legions of fans.

The exhibit will open at the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) on Friday, November 24th at LIMEHOF’s Stony Brook museum location (97 Main Street, Stony Brook, NY).

“It has been a thrill and an honor to work with Billy in creating this extraordinary testament to his life and music,” said Kevin O’Callaghan, LIMEHOF Creative Director. “It is one of the highlights of my long career and I’m sure visitors will be thrilled with the result.”

With temperatures dropping into the 60s and 50s in the next few weeks, be sure to bundle up for the show. Guests are welcome to bring a blanket or buy one at the venue.

Rooftop Cinema Club’s menu is always known for its vegan popcorn and themed cocktails, and the menu’s now got an autumnal twist with hot cocoa and apple cider to make the experience even cozier. Other snacks on the menu include hot dogs, Bavarian pretzels, nachos and popcorn. Classic movie candy, like M&Ms, Sour Patch Kids, Red Vines and Skittles are available for purchase, too. There’s also a full bar on site complete with beer and wine.

The cinema’s cashless, so be sure to bring a debit or credit card for snacks. As for tickets, be sure to buy them in advance; prices range from $19.50 to $28.50, depending on the time/date and seating options.

The rooftop theater sits atop the Embassy Suites Hotel on West 37th Street in Midtown where the skyline serves as a beautiful backdrop for the experience. But don’t worry about background noise because each movie-goer gets their own wireless headphones.

Keep the outdoor fun going a little longer this year with a movie night—just be sure to wear a hoodie or a jacket for this fall festivity.
