Step Inside The Mysterious Mind Of Edgar Allan Poe At His Former Bronx Cottage

Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, poet, editor, and literary critic who wrote humor, satire, hoaxes, and has even been credited with inventing the detective genre. But what Poe is best known for are his tales of mystery and the macabre, and as the tricks and treats of spooky season begin to settle in we can’t help but all want to surround ourselves with all the things that go bump in the night–well, some of us at least.

So while some of us would prefer not to go further than immersing ourselves in Poe’s creepy tales, others can take it one step further this spooky season by heading to this small little cottage in the Bronx to actually step inside the mind of Poe.

Edgar Allan Poe moved from Boston to New York in 1844 and into the cottage during the spring of 1846 with his wife Virginia and mother-in-law Maria Clemm. It was here that Poe penned some of his most famous poems, including The Bells, Eureka, and Annabel Lee. Poe rented the cottage, which served as his final home, for $100 per year before his death on October 7, 1849.

The cottage only has five rooms: a kitchen, parlor, and bedchamber on the main floor, and two small rooms in the attic. So, in other words, it’s not any smaller than the shoebox NYC apartments we’re used to today! And we’re not saying the cottage is haunted, but his wife Virginia did pass away in the very same bed that’s on view there, so you may want to keep an eye out for any spirits lurking around the corner.

According to the Historic House Trusttoday, the cottage’s rooms have been restored with furnishings appropriate to Poe’s 1840s residency including a desk and a wicker rocking chair thought to have belonged to the family.

The Edgar Allan Poe Cottage is the only house left from the old village of Fordham though the redevelopment of the village, including the widening of Kingsbridge Road, threatened the cottage’s existence. In order to save it it was moved a few blocks north before opening to the public on November 15, 1913.

Today, it’s owned by NYC Parks and operated by The Bronx County Historical Society. It was designated a New York City Landmark in 1966, began serving as a museum in 1975, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The cottage is essentially a living recreation of Poe’s legacy where visitors can get a glimpse of his life in the Bronx. You can also view a bronze portrait bust of the author, created by Edmond Thomas Quinn for Poe’s 100th birthday, on view inside the cottage.

Those that can’t visit the cottage in person can instead embark on a virtual tour of it online.

Admission to the Edgar Allan Poe cottage costs $5 for adults and $3 for children, students, and seniors 65+. Members of The Bronx County Historical Society can enjoy free admission to Poe Cottage, and free admission for NYC residents is also available through Culture Pass.

Rooftop Cinema Club is out for blood with this fall lineup for a great cause

At Rooftop Cinema Club this October, you can scare yourself silly (or laugh yourself into a fit if that’s more your style) with its slate of festive films.

Previously an only-for-summer activity, the fan-favorite rooftop cinema is staying open through the fall with some incredible movies and cool activations this fall. Here’s what to expect and how to get tickets.

RECOMMENDED: The best Halloween events for 2024 in NYC

Rooftop Cinema Club promises to put the “sin” in cinema with a lineup of haunting and horrifying films—if you’re brave enough to watch. On the calendar for October: Hocus Pocus, Friday the 13th, Mean Girls, The Shining, Beetlejuice, Death Becomes Her, Halloweentown, Practical Magic, American Psycho, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Halloween, Scream, and more.

Also during October, Rooftop Cinema Club is out for blood (literally), as they’re partnering with the NYC Blood Bank to raise awareness of the importance of donating blood. The Blood Bank team will be onsite October 5, October 12, October 19, and October 26 doing giveaways before screenings. Also expect a signature spooky cocktail and special popcorn boxes for those special events.

If you’re a Rocky Horror Picture Show fan or want to get in on the phenomenon, it’s your time to shine. On October 20, it’s the Rocky Horror Drag Show where dazzling queens will channel Frank-N-Furter and the gang, followed by a screening of the cult classic. All are welcome to get dolled up for the occasion with corsets and fishnets.

But if fishnets aren’t your thing, you can definitely show up in a cozy hoodie or a snuggly sweater for a show on one of these cool fall nights.

Tips for experiencing Rooftop Cinema Club

The cinema is located high above Midtown’s streets on the Skylawn rooftop of the Embassy Suites Hotel on West 37th Street where the skyline serves as an incredible backdrop. Don’t worry about background noise, though: You’ll get your own set of wireless headphones that block out street noise, and you can adjust the volume as needed.

As for seating, you’ll get to choose a standard high-back lounge chair or a premium lounge chair that comes with extra cushions. You’ll book your ticket type, then get to pick your exact seat on-site, first-come, first-served. Ticket prices range from $12-$29/person depending on your seating preference and movie time.

Snacks are, of course, an important part of the movie-going experience, and Rooftop Cinema Club delivers with hot dogs, Bavarian pretzels, nachos, popcorn, and pizza. There’s also a full bar on-site with beer, wine and themed cocktails.

A few more tips: If you’re going to a daytime screening, wear some sunscreen; if you’re going in the evening, bring a jacket. The cinema’s cashless, so be sure to bring a debit or credit card.

Chappell Roan Cancels All Things Go Appearances In NYC & DC

We’re going to have some disappointed festival-goers this weekend: the Chappell Roan All Things Go performances in NYC and Washington DC have been cancelled.

The singer took to Instagram on Friday, September 26th, to give her growing fanbase an update.

“I apologize to people who have been waiting to see me in NYC & DC this weekend at All Things Go, but I am unable to perform,” the “Good Luck, Babe!” singer wrote on her Instagram Stories. “Things have gotten overwhelming over the past few weeks and I am really feeling it.”

The post continued: “I feel pressures to prioritize a lot of things right now and I need a few days to prioritize my health. I want to be present when I perform and give the best shows possible. Thank you for understanding. Be back soon xox”

The singer was to be in NYC on Saturday the 28th at Forest Hills Stadium alongside Janelle Monáe, Hozier, Renée Rapp, Maren Morris, and others. Unfortunately for fans, Chappell is missing out on a milestone, as it is the first time the festival has made its way to NYC, although it’s been taking place since 2011. It’s well-known for promoting an inclusive environment for concert-goers.

But the “HOT TO GO!” crooner will make her way back to NYC later this year. She is slated to perform during SNL’s 50th season. She’ll be on the show’s fifth episode on Saturday, November 2nd, and John Mulaney will assume hosting duties.

Though the singer does have a few upcoming events on the calendar, other than SNL, it does not appear as if she’s making her way to NYC or the tristate area…at least not yet. We’ll be sure to keep you updated if any other information becomes available.

Chappell Roan just pulled out of the All Things Go Music Festival

Chappell Roan just pulled out of the All Things Go Music Festival

If you’ve been watching the meteoric rise of Chappell Roan over the summer, then you also know that the singer has spoken extremely openly about her mental health struggles, especially as she grapples with her newfound fame.

Citing concerns for her mental health again, Chappell Roan just announced that she’s dropping out of the much anticipated All Things Go Music Festival, which is taking place in New York and D.C. this weekend.

RECOMMENDED: The best things to do in NYC this weekend

Chappell Roan was supposed to be one of the headlining acts at the music festival, which was going to take place at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens on Saturday and the Merriweather Post Pavilion outside of Washington on Sunday.

“I apologize to people who have been waiting to see me in NYC & DC this weekend at All Things Go, but I am unable to perform. Things have gotten overwhelming over the past few weeks and I am really feeling it,” the singer said on an Instagram story on Friday. “I feel pressures to prioritize a lot of things right now and I need a few days to prioritize my health. I want to be present when I perform and give the best shows possible. Thank you for understanding.”

Recently, Roan received some heat for speaking about the presidential election and for not openly supporting a candidate. In the past several months, she’s also been criticized for being vocal about her mental health struggles, and recently took to TikTok to talk about how uncomfortable some of her fans have made her for stalking her in public. At the VMAs, she was also filmed yelling at a photographer who was rudely trying to catch her attention. Although some have little sympathy for Chappell Roan’s complaints, considering she’s making a lot of money and seeing huge commercial success, many others see how dehumanizing celebrity culture in the U.S. is.

“All Things Go strongly supports artists prioritizing their well-being and we ask our community to rally around Chappell Roan with love and understanding,” All Things Go said in a statement. “Let’s continue to show the world that music fans support not just the art, but the artists themselves.”

The rest of the concert is expected to continue on as planned. Other headliners who will perform at Forest Hills Stadium include Ethel Cain, Janelle Monae, Reneé Rapp and others. Visit its website for more information.

A first look at the magical new Tim Burton-inspired trail now open to the public

A first look at the magical new Tim Burton-inspired trail now open to the public

The much-anticipated new light trail inspired by Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is now open to the public at the New York Botanical Garden. The holiday season has begun!

Created by Adventurelive, the producers behind Broadway’s iconic Hamilton, and LETSGO, a creative company that has worked on similar projects around the world, the experience brings the famous film’s characters to life over 8,300 square feet of light installations that are made that much more wonderful by the technology employed throughout the area (think LED lighting, video projections, 3D sculptures).

In a way, attending the event feels like stepping inside Burton’s genius brain.

The experience is open through November 30 but, as the weeks go by, we expect the weather to turn colder and the rain to get more frequent—so we suggest snagging tickets to the shindig right here ASAP.
