A geomagnetic storm might impact your GPS system today and tomorrow
Here’s one celestial phenomenon we didn’t know we had to worry about: New York City’s Office of Emergency Management announced that it is monitoring a geomagnetic storm that may cause some disruptions today through tomorrow. Before we get into what, exactly, the occurrence involves, we’d like to make one thing clear: officials are urging everyone not to worry too much about this.
According to the National Weather Service, “a geomagnetic storm is a major disturbance of Earth’s magnetosphere that occurs when there is a very efficient exchange of energy from the solar wind into the space environment surrounding Earth.” Basically, changes in solar wing may produce big variations across the Earth’s magnetosphere.
On a practical level, New Yorkers should just be aware that the event might impact infrastructure systems like GPS and power grids. No word yet on how long, exactly, the storm or its effects might last but in case you are worried, you might want to invest in an AM radio. We also suggest signing up for Notify NYC alerts to stay up-to-date with all related news.
Here is the silver lining: according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the geomagnetic storm may actually make the Northern Lights visible in some parts of the country. NASA reports that is exactly what happened worldwide the last time a storm of this kind hit Earth back in May of 2024.
The news obviously made rounds on social media and, in true New York fashion, plenty of users found the humor in it all, suggesting citizens invest in some tin foil for a “last change [at that] summer glow.” Ah, New York, how we love thee.
Did You See Tyla’s Giant Traveling Tiger Around NYC?
It’s been a busy week for pop music: Charli XCX hosted a listening party Upstate, and Tyla celebrated the deluxe edition of her self-titled debut album in NYC.
How did the South African singer mark the occasion, you ask? Oh nothing too extraordinary — just a giant tiger venturing up and down the streets of Manhattan on October 10th. Ironically, the animal’s journey began at The Met, where the singer stole the show the first Monday in May in 2024 at the Met Gala. That’s where she sported an ultra-difficult dress that required her to be carried up the venue’s stairs.
Tyla’s latest Upper East Side venture is slightly different than that LOL moment this past spring, but it’s still equally intriguing.
Tyla’s “Find the NYC Tyga”
The album drop, which is slated for Friday, October 11th, obviously called for something unique, which is why the artist’s team decided to send the wild animal sculpture on a scavenger hunt. @tygerprint, the artist’s Instagram community page, wrote, “A Tyger is on the loose in NYC follow along on Tyla’s broadcast channel to see where the Tyger is heading [Thursday].”

If you happened to have been traveling in the lane next to the tiger, rest assured there was no accident at the zoo — it was all part of the plan. Did you catch it?

The up-and-coming singer, who earned the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance this year, wants to do more than create fun aesthetics to accompany her music. She’s trying to represent her South African roots.
“We’ve come a very, very long way,” Tyla said of South African musicians when speaking to The Los Angeles Times. “But we’re also not quite there yet. No matter how amazing our music has been, our culture has never really had that type of platform before. The Grammys doing that was a huge moment for everyone. But I feel like it’s just the beginning of something amazing for the continent.”

A festival celebrating all things pozole is coming to Brooklyn
One of Mexico’s most storied dishes is pozole. Dating back to pre-hispanic Mexico, the chile-spiked stew is made from hominy and meat, typically chicken or pork, and garnished every which way, including shredded lettuce or cabbage, chili peppers, onions and slices of radishes. As a way to close out Hispanic Heritage Month, a number of local and international chefs and over 100 spirit brands are coming together for a pozole fest like no other.
On Thursday, October 17, Bowl of ‘Zole is returning to Industry City. For its fourth year, over 20 chefs are cooking up their own signature spin on the dish, sharing storied family recipes to spooning up modern interpretations. Past variations have included pozole oysters and dumplings, plus vegan variations. For liquid courage, over 120 spirits, including mezcal, tequila and sotol, will be available for sipping while you slurp.

ICYMI, NYC Has Another Adorable Halloween Dog Parade
We wouldn’t dream of ringing in spooky season without our canine companions, so just point us to a Halloween dog parade and we’re there.
While the iconic Tompkins Square Park Halloween Dog Parade has become a tradition, it’s not the only event of its kind in our fantastic metropolis, fortunately for us.
New York Halloween Dog Parade & Costume Competition is its uptown counterpart that’s equally festive and delightful. If you haven’t added it to your October calendar, now is the time to do so. (And of course, visit a local Spirit Halloween to get the creative juices going.)
New York Dog Parade, the premier dog parade organization and registered 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, joined forces with Camp Canine’s Trick-or-Treat night and the Columbus Avenue BID to host a Halloween celebration on Sunday, October 27th, and we’re incredibly excited at the canine cuteness that awaits. Not only will our furry friends be able to show off their looks on Columbus Ave. between 73rd and 74th Streets, but they’ll be able to, with the help of their humans, utilize Camp Canine’s dog-friendly trick-or-treat map, which coincides with Open Streets between 67th and 77th Streets.
Truthfully, it sounds like our four-legged friends’ Halloween plans rival our own, and we’re pretty impressed. The event is free but registration is required for the costume competition. You can visit New York Dog Parade online to register and learn more. May the best pup — a.k.a. all of them — win.
Sunday, October 27th
Parade from 4-6pm, competition from 6-7pm
Columbus Ave between 73rd & 74th Streets

The Met Gala theme will celebrate Black dandyism, style and tailoring
The Met Gala is an opulent night out for celebrities, fashion icons and other luminaries to mark the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute spring exhibition, and it’s become a spectacle for the rest of us to gawk at and (recently) criticize.
In 2023, there was some hubbub over the theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” since the designer was known for making fatphobic, racist, misogynistic and Islamophobic comments, according to Time.
Last year, the event’s theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” was a commentary on humanity’s fragility, the passing of time and the ephemerality of wealth, which seemed to be lost on many of the attendees, including a TikToker who went viral (in the bad way) for lip synching to “Let them eat cake” in a Marie Antoinette-inspired getup.
This year, the Met seems to be going in another direction entirely, highlighting Black style in menswear over the centuries. The new theme is based on the upcoming 2025 spring exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
The production is apparently inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, and it will examine the “Black dandy,” and how this figure developed in Enlightenment Europe during the 18th century as well as a look at 21st-century incarnations in London, New York and Paris.
Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour will co-chair The Met Gala, which is set for May 5. LeBron James will serve as honorary chair. Renowned chef and (five-star) Tatiana owner Kwame Onwuachi will feed guests and artist Cy Gain will serve as the creative director alongside Derek McLane and Raúl Àvila.
In addition to entertaining the public at large, the Gala also serves as the Costume Institute’s primary source of annual funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, operations and capital improvements.
According to the Associated Press, this is the Met’s first fashion exhibit in over 20 years to focus on menswear, which explains the almost all-male slate of hosts.
“Fashion and dress have been used in a contest of power and aesthetics for Black people from the time of enslavement to the present, and dandyism has long served as a vehicle through which one can manipulate the relationship between clothing, identity, and power,” said Guest Curator Monica L. Miller in an official statement. “The history of Black dandyism illustrates how Black people have transformed from being enslaved and stylized as luxury items, acquired like any other signifier of wealth and status, to autonomous, self-fashioning individuals who are global trendsetters.
“This exhibition will explore concepts that define Black dandyism specifically and uncover elements of productive tension that appear when considering the figure—such as ownership, authority and self-possession, ease, exaggeration, freedom, transgression, dissonance, and spectacularity,” she continued. “It will also highlight the aesthetic playfulness that the dandy engenders and the ways in which sartorial experimentation gestures at both assimilation and distinction—all while telling a story about self and society.”
The Internet has, of course, already started talking about this all, specifically discussing the importance of getting the theme, and its execution, right.
Because the Met Gala is focused on Black culture, I need the invites to reflect that. I need the designers to respect black culture. This can be one of the most iconic themes of done correctly. pic.twitter.com/frLSxJMRyJ

Loving the fact that the Co-Chairs of the MetGala this year are all Black Men. The fashion this year will be interesting. I’m quite ecstatic to see the fits!

with Sir Lewis as one of its co-chairs, the MET gala can only go well. i’m very excited to see how things turn out under his influence. the theme is unique and offers opportunity for so much creativity. very exciting! i’m so happy Lewis got this opportunity. 💜 pic.twitter.com/pesI3Wmq8z

PSA to non-black celebs: You got almost 8 months to prepare for next year’s #MetGala theme. It would be a great idea to hire some astute black stylists on how you could honor the theme of black style wihout appropriation. https://t.co/jmZOg9qWEy pic.twitter.com/H6E0W4yIj2

A Network Of Bike Lanes, Market Spaces & Public Areas Are Being Envisioned Beneath The BQE
A new report titled BQE North and South: Safe, Sustainable, Connected details brand new concepts to bring public spaces beneath NYC’s busy Brooklyn Queens-Expressway (BQE).
With the help of community input, the NYC DOT’s concepts involve streetscape redesigns, added bike and bus infrastructure and highway capping to enhance the safety and resiliency of the area while improving available public spaces. NYC DOT notes that though the BQE is an essential part of NYC’s infrastructure, they hope to “reclaim spaces to enrich communities rather than divide them.”
The BQE Corridor Vision, specifically relating to the concepts for BQE North and South, outlines near-, medium- and long-term improvements across 10.6 miles of the expressway.
“The bold concepts outlined in this report would invest in working-class neighborhoods and reconnect communities long-divided by the Brooklyn Queens Expressway,” adds NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “Through a corridor-wide approach, we can equitably address safety, public space, and connectivity needs for neighborhoods that have often been left out of conversations around the BQE.”
Near-Term Projects along the BQE:
- Murals
- Seating and planters
- Pop-up markets
- Bike parking
- Lighting improvements
Medium-Term Projects along the BQE:
- Curb extensions
- Plaza kiosk
- Seasonal programming
- Pedestrian plaza
- Grade-separated bike lane
Long-Term Projects along the BQE:
- Pedestrian bridge
- Partial trench cover
- Full trench cover
No concepts are concrete and will be open to public feedback and additional analysis.
“This report captures important recommendations from the community to improve the lives of New Yorkers who live along the BQE in South Brooklyn,” said Michelle de la Uz, executive director, Fifth Avenue Committee.
You can learn more about the concepts and intentions behind improving the area along the BQE with this NYC DOT press release.
