The Italian American Museum, The First Institution Of Its Kind In NY, To Open In The Heart Of Little Italy
Gabagool, muzzarell, galamad, brosciutt…no, we’re not speaking gibberish, we’re speaking Italian American! And the 800,000 Italian Americans living in NYC–the largest population of Italian Americans in the United States–now have a new place to head to to be surrounded by their culture: NYC’s new Italian American Museum (IAM), the first institution of its kind in New York!
The Italian American Museum is the result of its principal founder’s vision, Dr. Joseph V. Scelsa, who was inspired by The Italians of New York: Five Centuries of Struggle and Achievement” exhibition at the New-York Historical Society in 1999. The exhibition was one of the Society’s most successful presentations in its history, and just two years later the Italian American museum was chartered by the State of New York.
Encouraging a full appreciation of what it means to be Italian American, the museum will allow Italian Americans to share their story in their voice and serve as a cultural hub for the community and the Little Italy neighborhood.
The museum will showcase both permanent and temporary exhibits, offer robust educational and cultural programming, and collaborate with the community. Its three inaugural exhibitions include Puppet Homecoming: The Historic Sicilian Manteo Marionettes Return to Mulberry Street, featuring 32 puppets given to the museum by Michael Manteo, the son of the Manteo Puppet Theater’s founder, The Quincentenary: The Voyages of the Italian Explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, and Good Night, Maria, a tribute to Italian Americans who toiled in the garment industry.
The museum has also been in contact with a Sicilian Puppet Theater Company in Catania, Fratelli Napoli, and are looking to bring them to the Museum for several live performances–the coolest part: this unique art form can only be seen in Sicily!
Beyond the exhibits, the museum will also host walking tours through Little Italy for visitors to learn about the exciting history of the neighborhood, once the largest Italian American social enclave in the nation at the turn of the 19th century.
Fabrizio Di Michele, Consul General of Italy in New York, stated:
After several years of construction, it is a great source of satisfaction to be present at the opening of the new Italian American Museum. This place highlights and celebrates not only the rich cultural heritage of Italian Americans in NYC, but also their significant contributions to the history and society of this great nation.
Learn more about the museum on their website.

Madison Avenue Affordable Housing Lottery Lists $600 Units
Always dreamed of living on Madison Avenue like notorious figures such as John F. Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt or even Prince Edward? Well, now you have the chance to! NYC’s Housing Connect has a waitlist to fill current and future vacancies in a high-rise on Madison Avenue (160 Madison Avenue) with units starting as low as $600.
As part of the city’s efforts to provide affordable housing to its residents (anything that’s a third or below someone’s income), the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and Housing Development Corporation (HDC) offers a variety of open lotteries that reserve units for a fraction of the cost.
A portion of those reserved units are set aside for community board members, New York employees, and the vision/hearing/mobility impaired; however, the rest are available via application to the general public.
Of course, there are numerous stipulations in order to qualify, such as an eligible income level, household size requirements and so on. The eligible income range to apply for this lottery is a yearly salary between $23,297 – $83,850.
Beyond a single one bedroom, 160 Madison Avenue also has five currently available studio units starting around $600. Though not yet available, future two bedroom vacancies don’t go above $1,010.86 per month. To contextualize, the average monthly rent for a two bedroom in New York City as of 2024 is $5,276, according to Apartments.com. That means these units will go for 5x less than the average cost of rent.
But let’s get into what really matters: the amenities. Residents of 160 Madison Avenue will be privy to floor-to-ceiling windows to take in the NYC skyline, on-site laundry, a 24-hour attended lobby, fitness center, outside area and more.
As of today (October 11, 2024), people have 27 days to apply, bringing the deadline to mid November, just before Thanksgiving. This is the perfect chance if you just missed the application for the affordable Hudson Yards units. Increase your chances by also applying to the Gowanus lottery with $800 units available.
Want to learn some secret tips on how to win an NYC housing lottery? We spoke with experts themselves to hear some of the most common unknown tips when applying.
You can find more on the Madison Avenue units and begin your application on NYC Housing Connect.

The ultimate hot chocolate can be found right here in Brooklyn
Trees are slowly turning amber and gold, jackets are coming out from the back of the closet and the air has a certain chill. Yes, fall is finally here. Appropriate for the season, Time Out Market New York has rolled out a full fall cocktail menu set to get you in the spirit. Plus, a few of our vendors are getting in on the spirited season with their own concoctions. Grab a drink from either bar, and if the weather’s still right, take to the rooftop patio to soak up the last rays of the season.
Drinks to try
1. Frosty Jack
While Jack Frost will soon be nipping at our toes, Frosty Jack will be nipping at our taste buds. Made with Planteray 3 Star Rum, this cocktail gets its wintry hue from a shot of blue Curacao. Coconut flakes rimmed on the glass and sprinkled on top bring all the snowy vibes.
2. Cherry Orchard
Walk through the orchard fields without leaving the city by ordering the Cherry Orchard. The market’s cocktail of the month features a blend of vodka and pamplemousse, finished with a dash of black cherry liquor. Remember—this cocktail is only available this month, so sip it while you can.
3. Winter Sangria
When is the best time to have sangria? With the Winter Sangria, any time. Infused with mulled spice, this red wine sipper brings all the fall feels, livened with a dash of orange liqueur, lemon and lime.
4. Hagave Lemonade
Not imbibing this season? No problem. The bar has whipped up a few spirit-free sippers so that all can enjoy. Take the Hagave Lemonade. Stirred with spiced nectar for those subtle fall flavors, the drink is lifted with a splash of club soda.
5. Ice Cream Hot Chocolate
The ultimate hot chocolate is back at Time Out Market. Sugar Hill Creamery’s Ice Cream Hot Chocolate starts simple enough, first with a base of housemade vanilla ice cream and chocolate. Transporting us to the outdoor campfire, the drink is topped with a swirl of marshmallow fluff that is torched a golden brown. But if only ice cream is calling, check out the Sweet Potato Latte Soft with sweet potato caramel and a graham cracker crumble.
You may be able to see the Northern Lights again in NYC tonight
Missed the spectacular Aurora Borealis above NYC last night? You’ve got another chance to catch the celestial event tonight.
The geomagnetic storm that’s causing the Northern Lights to show up this far south is sticking around for a few more hours, so you’ll want to look up this evening. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration just extended the geomagnetic storm warning, revealing that the Aurora may be seen as low as Pennsylvania, Iowa and Oregon.

Obviously, given the light pollution, New York City poses the biggest challenge to seeing these brilliant pinks, greens and blues. But things worked out for many of us last night, so the chances of catching the show again this evening are high.

If you really want to make an effort to get beautiful shots, head outside of the city (upstate even) or to a high or flat area that has a clear view of the horizon, between 10pm and 2am. We recommend any of these rooftop bars or grabbing friends and spending some time at these NYC parks.
Happy viewing!
