New York set for the coldest weather in two years

New York set for the coldest weather in two years

Think you’re cold? Well, it’s about to get frigid: according to meteorologists, a cold front is set to knock temperatures down significantly by early next week. In fact, experts are noting that the city has not been dealing with weather this cold in almost two years.

Just to give you a sense of things: on Tuesday and Wednesday, lows will reach negative 2 degrees with highs in the (very low) 10s. You’ll find us hiding in our apartments all week long.

The polar vortex behind the change in temperature is actually going to affect the country as a whole.

According to the New York Post, over 300 million Americans “all the lower 48 states and more than 80% of the population will see temperatures drop below freezing.”

Before it gets very cold, though, New Yorkers will be treated to slightly warmer weather this weekend, with temperatures rising back up to the 40s.

If spending time outdoors is not in the cards for you, worry not: NYC is home to a ton of indoor attractions that will make you forget all about winter. From unique exhibits to special classes, mini gold sessions, theater productions and oh-so-much more, here are the best indoor activities in NYC

This massive disco ball sculpture will soon be on display in Washington Square Park

This massive disco ball sculpture will soon be on display in Washington Square Park

Believe it or not, despite the plethora of public art pieces scattered throughout New York, no installation has been set up in Washington Square Park since 2017, when Ai Weiwei’s exhibit “Good Fences Make Good Neighbors” was displayed. That’s about to change by the end of this month with the January 26 debut of artist Ryan Van Der Hout’s “To Reflect Everything,” a 7-foot mirrored sculpture resembling a disco ball.

According to a press release, the piece invites viewers to explore themes of reflection, connection and transformation through its unique form and structure.

To celebrate the installation’s debut, which will be on view until March 30, NYC Parks Art and the Washington Square Park Conservancy have organized a grand opening event featuring a site-specific performance by Gino Romero.

untitled (to orbit Narcissus) draws from José Esteban Muñoz’s interpretation of the Narcissus myth about a handsome young man who, infatuated with his own reflection in a pool of water, falls to his death.

“Romero’s site-specific performance employs reflection and refraction as an invitation, using movement and mirrors to create a dialogue with To Reflect Everything,” reads the press release. “It fragments both the performer and the audience, exploring new ways of seeing and being.”

While downtown, we suggest you also take a trip up to Union Square, where two pink chairs are currently soaring 15 feet into the sky smack-dab in the middle of the park as part of “The Space Between Us,” a project by artist, composer and sculptor Risha Gorig. Meant to represent the act of public discourse, elevating conversation far above the chaos of the city, the installation feels particularly timely given next week’s Presidential Inauguration.

Streetwear brand Daily Paper is selling its iconic NYC flagship store

Streetwear brand Daily Paper is selling its iconic NYC flagship store

As more people abandon in-person shopping in favor of online retail, previously beloved brick-and-mortar stores have been closing all over the city. The latest casualty? The beloved Amsterdam-based luxury streetwear brand, Daily Paper, which just announced it will be closing and selling its NYC flagship on the corner of Chrystie and Delancey on the Lower East Side.

Even if you’ve never entered the store, you’d definitely recognize the building’s exterior: it’s become a staple of the Downtown streetscape with an eye-catching facade decorated with more than 13,000 flattened aluminum cans that pay homage to Afro-futurism and Dutch architecture.

RECOMMENDED: Why the claw machine arcade is NYC’s hottest spot right now

The flagship’s closure announcement coincides with an announcement that the brand’s revenue dropped to just above $14 million in the 2023-24 fiscal year, per FashionUnited—a slight growth in profits, but apparently not enough to keep the New York store open. Daily Paper attributes the closure to low revenue in the American market and the increasing operational costs required to keep its NYC store open.

The two-story, 1,140 square-foot space opened in 2020 and was Daily Paper’s first location outside of Amsterdam. It was designed in partnership with 4Plus Design, a firm that decked out the interior with mosaic, arches, glass floors, murals and an elegant juice and coffee bar lounge.

Daily Paper was created in 2012 by Hussein Suleiman, Abderrahmane Trabsini, and Jefferson Osei, three Dutch friends with African roots. The brand became famous for integrating African design elements into modern streetwear fads, and has partnered with global fashion giants like Puma, Off-White and cultural institutions like Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum

Daily Paper will continue its e-commerce operations across the U.S., and it’s not clear what type of buyers the Daily Paper is looking to take over its iconic building, or which exterior elements would be kept once the building is sold. Just in case, it’s a good idea to pay the store a visit as soon as possible.

The Daily Paper flagship at 18 Delancey Street is open Monday through Saturday from 11am to 7pm and Sundays from 11am to 6pm.

The Endearing Name A Roach Tradition Returns To The Bronx Zoo This Valentine’s Day

Name A Roach, the Bronx Zoo’s beloved Valentine’s Day tradition, is as longstanding as the critters themselves.

If you’re feeling particularly romantic this February, why not name a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach after your love bug? Or, if you’re not as inclined to celebrate all-things mushy gushy, perhaps there’s a creepy crawler that resembles your ex? The possibilities are endless!

On February 14th, lucky recipients will receive a certificate indicating that their partner (or ex) has kindly named them after one of the zoo’s rodents. Delightful! What better [trackLink link_url=”https://secretnyc.co/best-gift-experiences-nyc/”]Valentine’s Day gift experience[/trackLink] could you ask for?

And speaking of gifts, if you’re tired of the cliché chocolate and red roses, the Bronx Zoo will spice things up and accompany your certificate. There’s a maroon roach beanie that’s guaranteed to keep you wam during one of the coldest winters in NYC. There’s also an adorable mini shoulder bag that’s perfect for your phone-wallet-keys-Metrocard stash. Should you want to revel in the everlasting love of the roach, be sure to explore the zoo’s other offerings surrounding the critter. You and your boo can enjoy a virtual Valentine’s Day encounter with one of these bad boys and a surprise animal. Experts will give you the lowdown on the insect and its many unique features.

Additionally, there’s an adults-only after-hours program where you can sample chocolates and learn about the importance of insects in the production of chocolate, as well as WCS’s efforts with cocoa farmers globally.

This Map Compares The Size Of The Los Angeles Fires To NYC & Other U.S. Locations

The Los Angeles fires have been burning since January 7th, 2025, causing massive ruin and heartache in their wake.

At the time of publication, over 12,3000 structures and roughly 40,000 acres — which is comparable in size to Washington D.C. — have been destroyed. Though the horrific emergency has made international news, grasping the fires’ scope is not necessarily discernible to people who are unfamiliar with the California area.

This map scales the size of the Los Angeles fires to other U.S. locations

To help people understand how encompassing the destruction has been, Jeremia Kimelman of Cal Matters created a map that compares the L.A. fires — Palisades, Easton, and Hurst — to locations across the U.S. By typing in a neighborhood, address, or zip code, site visitors are able to visualize how the fire would affect their city in terms of size.

data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/DE09Li5OxZL/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:540px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);">

Once the scope is featured in site visitors’ native areas, it becomes incredibly clear just how widespread the devastation in California has been.

Representatives from Cal Matters indicate that the images in this post are a comparison of fire size based on a several different locations, and does not indicate the exact location of any of these fires. Should visitors need, Cal Matters’ wildfire tracker has up-to-date information about the location of active fires in the area.
