Duel against Olympic fencing legends in Manhattan this month

Duel against Olympic fencing legends in Manhattan this month

Racing through Grand Central Terminal to catch your train might feel like an Olympic sport in itself. But now you can try your hand at an actual Olympic sport in the city’s very own Beaux-Arts national landmark as well as at Central Park.

Launched by USA Fencing, Fencing Across America is bringing the Olympic sport to two spots in Manhattan later this month. The Grand Central Terminal activation runs from July 27-August 4 from 2-7pm. If you can’t make it to Grand Central, there’s another USA Fencing activation at Wollman Rink at Central Park, running from July 28-August 4. Get the chance to pick up a blade to experience the thrill of fencing and receive a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to duel against olympic legends.

RECOMMENDED: NYC Events in July 2024

The activations include demos and learning opportunities. They are part of a larger nationwide initiative to introduce fencing directly to fans as the Paris 2024 Olympics kicks off at the end of this month.

“We’re bringing the Olympic and Paralympic spirit directly to the people,” USA Fencing CEO Phil Andrews said in a press release. “We know fans across the country will be inspired by the incredible competition they witness from our Olympians in Paris and we want to capitalize on that momentum by giving people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to get in on the action and try their hand at a life-changing sport.”

USA Fencing hopes that by providing fans with a hands-on, accessible experience in the sport, a new and energized generation of fencers will follow.

In addition to New York City, stops along the nationwide fencing tour include Atlantic City, New Jersey, Denver, and San Francisco.

10 Tastiest Lobster Rolls In NYC You Need To Try Right Now

It may be the summer of hot dogs in NYC, but we’re one-upping it and saying it’s the summer of…lobster rolls?! Who says you need to go New England or Long Island to find the best one when there’s plenty of mouthwatering places to get one in the Big Apple.

To make the most of #LobsterRollSummer we’ve done the hard work and gathered the best spots to find one (with a little help from our followers of course). Here’s where to find that flaky, buttery lobster roll for when you have your next summer craving.

1. Luke’s Lobster, Multiple Locations

Source / Luke’s Lobster

With multiple “shacks” around NYC, there’s no shortage of Luke’s Lobster and thank goodness! Their Lobster Roll comes served either warm or Maine style, which means chilled lobster, a swipe of mayo, lemon butter, and that utterly delicious Luke’s Secret Seasoning. It’ll run you $23 – $34 depending on if you get the 4 oz or 6 oz option…and we recommend pairing it with the mouthwatering New England Clam Chowder and oyster crackers. Find one near you and book it this summer, trust us. See all of Luke’s Lobster’s menus here.

2. Cull & Pistol, Chelsea

Facebook / Cull & Pistol

Cull & Pistol is actually a full-service restaurant offspring of Lobster Place (further down this list), and the lobster rolls here are some of the absolute best. For $37, you can order their Lobster Roll either cold (chilled lobster salad with mayo and scallions) OR hot (knuckle & claw meat, warmed lobster butter, fines herbes, Kewpie mayo & lemon) —both equally delicious. While you’re at it spoil yourself with some oysters, their specialty which come from Canada, New England, and beyond…don’t forget to thank us later. See Cull & Pistol’s full menu here!

Where: 75 9th Ave

3. The Fulton by Jean-Georges, Seaport

Source / Eric Medsker

We frequent The Fulton by Jean-Georges for many reasons, the waterfront setting, the brand name chef, but most importantly…the lobster roll. It’s the hidden gem in Seaport in our opinion, and you can only snag it up during their lunch hours from 11:30 am – 2:30 pm Monday – Friday.

The Maine Lobster Roll, which we think Chef Jean-Georges blesses himself, comes out with loads of whole claw meat plopped into a divine buttered potato bun topped with celery, lettuce, and spices. Pair it with their in-house made potato chips and it’s the best little upscale bite you’ll ever have. See The Fulton’s full menu here!

Where: 89 South St

4. North River Lobster Company, Pier 81

Source / North River Lobster Company

Hop aboard the city’s only floating lobster shack and dig into a roll…because nothing quite beats a lobster roll on the water. North River Lobster Company actually offers 4 different options that tingle our tastebuds, which include the Classic Lobster Roll on a potato bun, the Connecticut Roll served warm with melted butter on a potato roll, the Double Truffle Roll with truffle oil mayo on a potato bun with truffle parmesan fries, and our favorite (and the most interesting) the Lower East Side Roll with scallion cream cheese and red onions on an everything roll. The bites and the views are all chef’s kiss. See North River Lobster Company’s full menus here.

Where: Pier 81 W 41st St

5. Red Hook Lobster Pound, Red Hook

Source / Dominic Perri

Red Hook, Brooklyn might be a trek for some New Yorkers, but it’s definitely worth the hike…especially with it potentially being the best lobster roll in Brooklyn. The nautical-themed spot is just a block from the waterfront, and their special “Lobster Roll” section will have you debating what to order for hours.

They of course have the traditional Maine-Style (cold) and Connecticut-Style (warm) rolls, but we suggest venturing out to their other options like the California Roll (Maine lobster salad, lettuce, cucumber, avocado), BLT (lobster salad, chipotle mayo, applewood smoked bacon topped with paprika and scallions), or Fried Lobster Roll (fried lobster tossed in lobster caramel sauce with kewpie mayo). See their full menu and plan a visit here!

Where: 284 Van Brunt St, Brooklyn

6. Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co., Greenpoint

Facebook / Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co.

Head to Greenpoint, Brooklyn to get your hands on this tasty roll, which comes served with a choice of mayo or butter. The heaps of lobster knuckles covered in zesty lemon flavor will have you crawling back for more. It’ll run you $34, and we suggest taste testing some other menu items while you’re there because it’s all so fresh. See Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co.’s full menu here!

Where: 114 Nassau Ave, Brooklyn

7. Grand Banks, Pier 25

Hop aboard the historic wooden schooner, Sherman Zwicker, and order one of Grand Banks’ Lobster Rolls, which includes Maine lobster with herb-dulse emulsion and pickled cucumber on a griddled potato bun. The floating oyster bar on an old fishing boat vibe is the perfect place to scarf down one of these puppies. See Grand Banks’ full menu here.

Where: Pier 25, Hudson River Park

8. Jeffrey’s Grocery, West Village

Instagram / @jeffreysgrocery

This West Village staple is vouchable for many reasons, but one of their main ones is because of their lobster rolls. Jeffrey’s Grocery serves their rendition with herb mayo, pickled cucumber, and house chips and will cost you $35. The best part is it’s served all day and night long. See Jeffrey’s Grocery’s full menu here.

Where: 172 Waverly Pl

9. Mark’s Off Madison, NoMad

Instagram / @marksoffmadison

When we found this spot on TikTok we were a little skeptical at first, but Mark’s Off Madison definitely lives up to the hype. Their lobster rolls are packed to the brim and are served in finely toasted buns with a side of crinkly chips. We’re in awe every time we come here because there’s so many incredible sandwich options to choose from. See their full menu here!

Where: 41 Madison Ave Ground Level

10. Lobster Place, Chelsea Market

Instagram / @lobsterplacenyc

Last but not least is maybe one of the OG spots in NYC for lobster rolls, Lobster Place. With a name like that, you just know they’re good. It’s actually located inside Chelsea Market where you can order one up amongst your shopping travels throughout the famous stalls. They’re served in either 4 or 6 oz increments here, packed with claw & tail meat, celery, scallions, lemon & mayo. Browse the fish market right near after, it’s pretty neat. See Lobster Place’s full menu here.

Where: 75 9th Ave

Shark Spotted Lurking In Rockaway Waters

Thanks to the drones that were first distributed across NYC beaches last summer to keep swimmers safe, the latest shark sighting was recorded at Rockaway Beach on Thursday, July 11th.

At the time of the initial sighting, the beach was closed from 64th St to 104th St in the early afternoon. Yet shortly after, another sighting was caught on the drones, closing beaches from 58th to 81st.

Red flags were seen flying to signal to swimmers of the water’s high hazard and temporary closure. It has not been discerned whether the two confirmed shark sightings were the same animal.

Today, the beaches have reopened to swimmers as numerous surfers were spotted venturing into the water this morning.

Shark sightings aren’t atypical for New York waters, hence why the drones were implemented in the first place. You can learn more about shark safety protocol in New York here.

The Museum of Ice Cream is taking over Hudson Yards with a sprinkle pool and free Dippin’ Dots

The Museum of Ice Cream is taking over Hudson Yards with a sprinkle pool and free Dippin’ Dots

From seeking out the city’s best scoops and sundaes to seeing how many of those said scoops we can fit into our mouths (peep the list to see our current record), here at Time Out New York, we love all things ice cream. So when National Ice Cream Day rolls around on July 20, it’s more than just another food holiday. For us, it’s a lifestyle. Naturally, The Museum of Ice Cream agrees and is going big for the coldest day of the year.

RECOMMENDED: The 12 best ice cream shops in NYC

Teaming up with Dippin’ Dots, The Museum of Ice Cream is giving away 20,000 (count em’, 20,000) samples of ice cream. Guests can choose between two iconic flavors: cotton candy or rainbow. Even better? The pop-up will be doling out free samples all weekend long, from July 20 through July 21 starting at 11am.

Upping the ante the only way the museum knows how, the pop-up at Hudson Yards will feature a giant outdoor sprinkle pool near the Vessel, perfect for taking a few envious-inducing Instagram stories.

But if you can’t make it to Hudson Yards that weekend, Dippin’ Dots is here to keep you cool. Only on July 20, 120 locations across the country will be giving out free mini cups of ice cream, two New York spots included (234 West 42nd St and 24 East 23rd St). So take a dip, get your dots and cheers to the beauty that is National Ice Cream Day.

Ornate lanterns are lighting up NYC’s Garment District

Ornate lanterns are lighting up NYC's Garment District

People often talk about New York City’s skyline at night—where office lights and lit-up bridges glow like stars in the night sky. But the Garment District is taking lighting to the next level, in their new public art installation “New Start, New Hope.” The installation, created by local artist Xin Song, features 135 ornate lanterns that dot the city streets along three Broadway plazas.

The lanterns, strung in the air, light up in green, red and blue hues. Each one is designed with intricate patterns, some of which resemble flowers, diamonds or shamrocks. Find them on the Broadway plazas between 36th and 39th Streets where they’re free to visit through January 2025.

RECOMMENDED: The best outdoor art in NYC this summer

Artist Xin Song worked in the Garment District during the pandemic, and she drew on that experience when creating the project with hopes that her lantern displays serve as a visual sign for an optimistic future. As a contrast to the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood, this lantern installation seeks to provide pedestrians with a moment of stillness and light, literally.

“We are delighted to showcase Xin Song’s radiant lanterns in our neighborhood,” Barbara A. Blair, president of the Garment District Alliance said in a press release. “Xin’s captivating creations not only brighten our plazas, but also demonstrate the power of public art in bringing our community spaces to life. We encourage all to visit and find a moment of calm in their day-to-day routines by visiting this installation.”

Xin Song currently lives in Brooklyn but works from her artist studio at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in the Garment District. She previously attended the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, where she studied Chinese folk arts and Chinese traditional paper-cutting techniques. Her artwork has appeared in major landmarks across the world, including the Venice Biennial, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, and the National Art Museum of China.

“New Start, New Hope” is a part of the Garment District Art on the Plazas, a year-round public art program facilitated by the NYC Department of Transportation Art. While you’re in the Garment District, also visit “Shaved Portions,” a 35-foot sculpture made of deconstructed rubber tires.
