Tornadoes might hit New York today

Tornadoes might hit New York today

In case you forgot that we literally lived through an earthquake in New York City earlier this year, Mother Nature is here to remind us of our mortality again by unleashing yet another apocalyptic event on us all.

Starting this evening and continuing throughout the night, New York and surrounding areas are expected to deal with storms so powerful that they might even lead to the formation of tornados, according to NBC New York

RECOMMENDED: Here’s when NYC will see a reprieve from its current heat wave

Starting 2am tonight through 6am in the morning, rain showers will descend upon us. Apparently, thunderstorms will also define our weekend beginning Friday afternoon.

The heightened tornado watch is a result of the extreme hot and humid weather mixing with the cooler air that usually accompanies storms. Experts predict that Western New York and Pennsylvania will likely be hit the hardest.

Needless to say, this isn’t a typical phenomenon in the New York area. According to some meteorologists, these sorts of tornadoes show up around here approximately once every four years.

Don’t expect the downpour to end this heat, though. The current heatwave—the second one this summer—is expected to continue for about another week. Check our our guides for how to stay cool this summer as well as where you can find cooling centers throughout NYC.

As for tonight, make sure to check on the most up-to-date severe weather alerts in your area as the day progresses.

The 5 best places to eat at Barclays Center

The 5 best places to eat at Barclays Center

Barclays Center has been a hub for all things music and entertainment since 2012. The 670,000-seater arena has been graced with the likes of Beyoncé and Madonna and serves as a home base for the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Liberty. And while many arenas are adept at providing entertainment and lacking in the food section, the eateries at Barclays bring it home. Through its Brooklyn Taste program—a culinary initiative that integrates local, community-based businesses in the arena—Barclays mirrors the melting pot of the borough, featuring shredded birria tacos, pulled pork sammies and hickory-smoked jerk chicken. So in between cheering on your team (or jeering at your rivals), remember to cruise the food options for some hometown favorites.

Junior’s Desserts and More (Sections 3 & 29)
As if a slice of Junior’s cheesecake wasn’t enough, Junior’s Desserts and More has, well, more! Sweet tooths can be satiated with an array of gooey cookies from Chip City Cookies or a swirl of soft serve ice cream by cone or cup. Even if your team doesn’t bring home the gold, at least with a slice of Junior’s iconic dessert, you’ll always be a winner.

Likkle More Jerk (Section 23)
Beef patties at Barclays? Say less. Bringing the Caribbean to the BK, Likkle More Jerk’s offerings are set to fix any hunger that ails you. Running late to your seat but need a snack? The housemade patties and coco bread are perfect for noshing on the go. Looking to chow down? Look no further than the Likkle More Jerk Chicken Bowl with their signature jerk chicken over a bed of rice and slaw. Don’t forget to add a slice of plantains on the side.

Nathan’s (Section 206)
Is there nothing more New York than rooting on your favorite team than with a Nathan’s hot dog in hand? If there is, we don’t know what. Now we aren’t saying that ordering a classic dog with a squeeze of spicy brown mustard and piling it high with onions will help tip a win in your favor, but we aren’t saying that it won’t either.

Nenes Taqueria (Section 7)
Chef Andres Galindo helped to cement birria’s status in New York with Nenes Taqueria. Of course, the star here is the birria (duh) which comes with a helping of consomme for courtside dipping. But if somehow you just aren’t in the mood for birria, the shredded chicken is also a solid option. Veggie lovers can also get in on the noshing here too with the mushroom tacos. But no matter what you order, don’t forget to ask for the green sauce.

Pig Beach (Section 23)
We all collectively mourned when the original Pig Beach smoked its last pig in 2022. While the Queens location has remained strong, the closure left a pork-shaped hole in our hearts. But luckily the smoker is on and cooking at Barclays. Game days call for Pig Beach BBQ Beef Sandwich with a squeeze of world champion BBQ sauce or the Pulled Pork Sandwich livened with pineapple slaw and a delightfully tangy hatch vinegar BBQ sauce. Sticky hands are guaranteed, so remember to grab a wet nap before heading back to your seat.

Iconic NYC pizzeria Roberta’s has landed in Manhattan

Iconic NYC pizzeria Roberta’s has landed in Manhattan

Once a humble Bushwick hang for perfectly charred Neapolitan pies, Roberta’s is now teetering on the edge (if not already over) of a burgeoning empire. From its start in a shipping container, Roberta’s profile now includes two outposts in Los Angeles and shrink-wrapped frozen pizzas in Whole Foods all along the East Coast. And if you don’t find yourself on either coast, Roberta’s can be delivered straight to your door thanks to Goldbelly. While it may seem like the pizza spot has outgrown us, its newest Manhattan opening shows us that Roberta’s has nothing but love for NYC.

On July 16, Roberta’s (1 Pennsylvania Plaza) will debut in The PENN District, a mixed-use campus developed by Vornado. The spacious two-story restaurant outpaces the original location, with 200 seats across both floors including a full-service restaurant, a second outpost of their slice shop, R Slice (more on that below). The second floor will soon launch a tiki bar later this month, sure to cool us down during these sweltering times.

Brooklyn pies that we have come to know and love will be on the menu, like the Famous Original (tomato, mozzarella, Parmigiano, caciocavallo, oregano and chili) and the honey-drizzled Bee Sting (tomato, mozzarella, soppressata, basil, chili and honey). But to pair with rooftop views, the second story will feature dry-aged steaks and a full raw bar.

While the full rollout of the full-service restaurant will happen next week, R Slice is open. Five slices from the menu range from the standard cheese and pepperoni to the Allium slice with onions, chives, taleggio and pecorino. Roberta’s sister restaurant, Foul Witch, makes a cameo here, as their famous Fire & Ice appetizer—stracciatella, spicy ‘ndjua sausage and olive oil—is turned into a slice. Whether slice on the go to pizza pie on the roof, we can’t wait to welcome Roberta’s to the neighborhood.

After Spending $1.6M, The Official NYC Trash Bin Has Been Selected—& It’s $46

Soon, all NYC properties with 1-9 residential units and special use buildings that receive DSNY collection will need to have what’s been deemed the “official NYC bin for trash,” a requirement that will help containerize 70% of the city’s 14 billion pounds of annual trash in a two year time span.

The official unveil from NYC Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) Commissioner Jessica Tisch occurred on Monday, July 8th as part of the city’s “Trash Revolution.” They’ve given affected property owners and building managers until November 12th to begin using the new bins. By that timeline, the bins should be ordered at the latest by October 1 to arrive in time. Noncompliant stakeholders will be subject to possible fines starting January 2, 2025.

Properties already using containers for trash will have an 18-month grace period, and be required to use the new official bin effective June 1, 2026.

NYC’s official trash bin features a secure attaching lid and wheels to assist the containers movement. So why this specific trash can? Well after the DSNY and the city’s Economic Development Corporation awarded consulting firm, McKinsey & Company, with a $4 million contract to handle NYC’s trash problem (in which the company was only paid $1.6 million), these bins were the solution.

According to the press release, it’s the cheapest bin of its quality, with similar containers sold at stores for thrice the price. Moreover, they’ve been “custom designed to work with our trucks, [and] are the key to keeping our most precious real estate — New York City sidewalks — clear,” said Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi.

Keeping NYC sidewalks clear doesn’t just aid with aesthetics, but also mitigates New York City’s rat mitigation problem, echoes Director of Citywide Rodent Mitigation Kathleen Corradi. “With this next step in the Department of Sanitation’s ‘Trash Revolution,’ New York City continues its efforts to systematically deny rats a curbside buffet and get black bags off our streets.”
