Chick-fil-A is coming to the Upper West Side

Chick-fil-A is coming to the Upper West Side

Chick-fil-A already has 10 locations across the New York City area, but none of them were on the Upper West Side—until now.

According to West Side Rag, a work permit was recently posted to 795 Columbus Avenue near West 98th Street, promising an 11th eatery.

While Chick-fil-A has yet to confirm the opening, a Bareburger already exists at this large mixed-use building, which also has a Target and a Home Goods. The unit in question used to be a women’s LOFT clothing shop.

The fast-food chicken eatery that is beloved for its sandwiches, nuggets, waffle fries and its Chick-fil-A sauce, just opened a location in Yonkers this month. There’s no word yet on when the Upper West Side location will open. As mentioned earlier, there are currently 10 Chick-fil-As in the NYC area, including in Downtown Brooklyn, multiple in midtown, one downtown and one in Hoboken/Jersey City.

It’s too early to tell what it’ll look like or if there is anything special about this new location. But one thing is for sure: it won’t be open on Sundays!

This Lower East Side bar was named the best new cocktail bar in the U.S.

This Lower East Side bar was named the best new cocktail bar in the U.S.

Last week, some of the best cocktail movers and shakers in the scene flew down to New Orleans for the annual Tales of the Cocktail conference. Gathering international and national talent from around the world, the weeklong event featured seminars, conversations and spirited demos, tastings and pop-ups. As a grand finale, the festivities came to a close with the 18th annual Spirited Awards. Held on July 25, the premier awards honored excellence in the drink industry and recognized professionals, organizations and establishments shaping the hospitality community. Since 2007, the awards have recognized beverage professionals, products and venues worldwide. This year, New York won big, as the Best New U.S. Cocktail Bar, presented by Diageo Bar Academy, went to one of our favorites: Superbueno, which we named as the top bar in NYC right now.

With just a little over a year of service, Superbueno has proven it is more than just a tequila and agave bar. That in part goes to owner Ignacio “Nacho” Jimenez. Sharing his heritage in a cocktail glass, Jimenez’s menu includes pasilla chile-infused vodka, martinis tinged with tajín and blackish-purple-hued margaritas blended with huitlacoche, the truffle of Mexico. Also holding the title maestro de ceremonias, Jimenez keeps the vibe going, DJing behind the booth and pouring mezcal shots well into the early hours. This win adds to a list of accolades the Lower East Side bar has racked up, including recognition from Bon Appétit, Food & Wine and secured a number two spot on World’s Best 50 Bars North America list.

“Superbueno started as a dream of creating a space where I could feature and honor my heritage through my journey in hospitality,” said Jimenez in his acceptance speech. “I’m so, so happy and honored that it has resonated with so many.”

Here’s how you can elect NYC’s next dog mayor

Here’s how you can elect NYC’s next dog mayor

If you’ve ever experienced the true chaos of March Madness or the excitement of the Olympic Games, chances are you’ve heard of—or even filled out—their almost-just-as-exciting sporting brackets. But have you ever heard of the New York City Honorary Dog Mayor election bracket?

This summer, 16 “canine-didates” are running for NYC’s next honorary dog mayor. Sally the Basset Hound, the current dog mayor, is stepping down after being elected in 2022. Having beaten Riley the Golden Retriever, Sally held strong for her two-year term in office but has now decided to pass the baton. This means it is officially time to elect a new NYC dog mayor.

On Wednesday, July 31, Puccini the Yorkiepoo and Mello the Samoyoed will go up against each other. Puccini lives in Hell’s Kitchen and runs with the campaign slogan “Pawsitively Puccini,” stating in an Instagram post, “As a dog, I know our city’s streets, parks, and treats like the back of my paw. I promise to make our community a  better place for all species!”

VERSUS

They are the second pairing going head to head, with Pepper the Mini Chocolate Dachshund knocking out Zayla the Rottweiler just last week. Other dog candidates that have yet to hit the polls hail from all five boroughs, including Upper East-Sider Shayna the Coton de Tulear.

Don’t fret if you check out these pups’ social media accounts and find they have more followers than you, as it’s a prerequisite for the honorary mayor title. With plenty of followers and impressive award-filled resumes, these furry friends are more than qualified for the job.

Voting occurs each Wednesday from midnight to midnight, with polls on the @dogmayornyc Instagram stories, as well as their Facebook and Twitter accounts. The final vote goes down on November 4th.

100 Larger Than Life Indian Elephants Are Migrating Across The U.S. To NYC

Us New Yorkers are used to seeing pigeons and rats on our daily strolls through the city. As for elephants, not so much. However that’s about to change as 100 magnificent Indian elephants are migrating their way to NYC!

Well…sort of!

The elephants aren’t real, of course. Rather it’s a herd of 100 life-size elephant statues. Dubbed The Great Elephant Migration, the installation is “a global fundraising adventure to amplify indigenous knowledge and inspire the human race, to share space,” according to their website.

And the intention of the installation reaches far beyond just wowing viewers.

The Great Elephant Migration is a collaboration between indigenous artisans, contemporary artists, and cultural institutions, that’s set to raise millions of dollars to power human-wildlife coexistence projects and protect migratory animals.

And, just like migratory elephants in real life, the heard of elephant statues are migrating their way across the U.S.–they’re currently taking up residence in Newport, Rhode Island, and will migrate their way to NYC this September where they’ll reside until October.

The elephants were created by 200 indigenous artisans living in Nilgiri Hills, Southern India, where, according to their site, humans and elephants coexist in the densest overlap on the planet.

They were sculpted out of lantana camara, one of the world’s top invasive weeds that threatens the elephants’ habitat.

While us New Yorkers don’t come face-to-face with these massive creatures while we’re out and about, the population of the population of elephants, rhinos, lions and tigers has also doubled over the last 30 years. The Great Elephant Migration is a testament to the belief that humans and nature can thrive alongside one another.

After spending two months in NYC the elephants will pay a visit to our friends over in Miami in December before migrating to Browning, Montana in May and June of 2025. They’ll finally end their journey with our friends in L.A. in July 2025.

If You’re Looking For A Tall Man, Move Out Of NYC

Dating in NYC is already hard enough. But if you’re committed to finding a tall man, New York City might not be the best place to look. In fact you’d have better luck in states like Montana, South Dakota, Alabama, Tennessee, Utah and Nebraska.

According to Newsweek using information from Data Pandas, the average height for men in New York is 5’9.8 ft (177.29 cm). When analyzing the average male height across the nation however, the aforementioned states including Montana, South Dakota, Alabama, Tennessee, Utah and Nebraska took first place with the average male height of 5’10.6 ft—maybe all that corn is really doing something!

And though western states have proven to raise the tallest men on average in the country, Hawaii (5’9 ft) and California (5’9.4 ft) are the outliers with the shortest men.

When looking at a global scale, the overall American male average height tops out at 5’9.7 ft. This makes the USA 47th in the global ranking for average male height. In fact, the Dutch lead the world in average male height, reaching 6’0.4 ft.

It’s particularly complex to understand which factors ultimately lead to greater height, be it nutrition, lifestyles or regional demographics. You can read more from the study here.

NYC is apparently home to two of the most underrated U.S. tourist attractions

NYC is apparently home to two of the most underrated U.S. tourist attractions

Here’s the funny thing about tourist attractions: when you live next to them, you often take them for granted—which is why a new survey by Jackpot City Casino fills us with renewed excitement.

According to the survey, both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park are among the most underrated tourist attractions in the U.S.

To come up with its ranking, the outlet analyzed over 50 popular destinations all over the nation “using online review scores and the percentage of reviews including negative words,” according to an official press release.

The list was topped by the Stetson Mansion in DeLand, Florida, a historic home built for hat manufacturer John B. Stetson by Philly architect George T. Pearson in 1886.

When looking at New York specifically, the Met lands at position number three. Obviously one of the most popular destinations in the city, the massive museum receives more than four million visitors annually—but clearly doesn’t get as much attention and praise as it deserves.

“For art and history fans, the museum is well worth the trip, showcasing ancient art, architecture and stunning gardens,” reads the official study. “Just 0.38% of all reviews include negative language and the attraction receives a perfect review score from visitors.”

The Met takes up a massive 11.5 acres within Central Park, which happens to be the second NYC destination to make this specific ranking.

The iconic green space is the number nine destination on the list, with a visitor rating of 4.5 and a 0.19% of reviews featuring negative words. Perhaps, the park is underrated because the majority of people don’t know about all the awesome things and experiences to be enjoyed on site—from the Central Park Zoo to the Ramble and a climb up Belvedere Castle, among plenty more.

This is all to say: New York City is home to some amazing attractions that are worth visiting all year around, whether you are a local or a tourist… so go on and explore!

Here are the ten most underrated attractions across the U.S. according to the study:

1. Stetson Mansion – DeLand, FL

2. USS Midway Museum – San Diego, CA

3. The Metropolitan Museum of Art – New York, NY

4. Garden of the Gods – Colorado Springs, CO

5. The Art Institute of Chicago – Chicago, IL

6. Getty Centre – Los Angeles, CA

7. The National WWII Museum – New Orleans, LA

8. Lincoln Memorial – Washington D.C.

9. Central Park – New York, NY

10. Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco, CA
