A Colossal, Hyper-Realistic Pigeon Sculpture Is Flying Its Way To The High Line

We’ve been told the rats don’t run this city, but we’re thinking it may actually be the pigeons that do after getting word that a colossal, hyper-realistic pigeon sculpture will soon land on the High Line.

Okay okay, maybe the pigeons actually don’t run the city, because after all it is fake, but it’s way bigger than us humans, we’ll tell ya that.

From artist Iván Argote the sculpture, aptly named Dinosaur, stands a whopping 16 feet tall. It’s cast in aluminum and will stand on a concrete plinth resembling the sidewalks and buildings that NYC’s pigeons call home.

Dinosaur does a complete 180 of the typical power dynamic between bird and human. While we’re used to towering over pigeons ourselves, the pigeon will instead tower over us as we simply meander like ants below its feet.

Through the sculpture Argote chose to challenge traditional monuments that celebrate significant historical figures and instead canonize the familiar New York City street bird–a bird that truly makes the city what it is.

And considering pigeons first began to arrive in the U.S. in the 1800s–during which time they were used for food, kept as pets and used as message carriers, and presented as symbols of beauty and wealth–we’d say it’s about time a statue was created after one!

Argote stated:

The name Dinosaur makes reference to the sculpture’s scale and to the pigeon’s ancestors who millions of years ago dominated the globe, as we humans do today. The name also serves as reference to the dinosaur’s extinction. Like them, one day we won’t be around any more, but perhaps a remnant of humanity will live on — as pigeons do — in the dark corners and gaps of future worlds. I feel this sculpture could generate an uncanny feeling of attraction, seduction, and fear among the inhabitants of New York.

The pigeon will be installed on the High Line over the intersection of 10th Avenue and 30th Streets in October 2024 where it will remain on view for 18 months.

New Yorkers react to the shocking closure of the Astor Place Starbucks

New Yorkers react to the shocking closure of the Astor Place Starbucks

New York University students, downtown revelers and coffee fiends have been coming together at the Starbucks near Astor Place for nearly 30 years, sipping on their cappuccini while staring at the iconic Cube sculpture in the area. Alas, that Starbucks, until now the largest one in Manhattan, is no more: the destination officially closed this past Sunday night.

New Yorkers are rightfully shocked: the company had not announced the imminent shuttering and the venue is always pretty crowded.

Although initial reports pegged the closure to high rent, the New York Post reports that the company that owns the space refuted that theory.

“We are sad they chose to leave, even as we offered a lease extension that would have allowed them to remain in their existing space at the exact same rent,” a spokesperson for ASG Equities, who owns the venue, said to the New York Post.

A former barista also told the paper that the 2022 unionization of the store’s employees “didn’t improve [its] chances of staying open.” A Starbucks representative denied those allegations.

“We apply the same focus to evaluate, modify and close both union-represented and non-union stores based on our ability to provide the Starbucks Experience to our customers and to support both our partners and the business,” said the rep.

Whatever the case may be, one thing is for sure: the Starbucks on Astor Place is now closed—a development that has led many to social media to mourn their loss and reminisce about the good times they had in there.

Here is a collection of some of the best reactions to the closure:

100 life-size elephants will take over NYC this autumn

100 life-size elephants will take over NYC this autumn

New Yorkers are used to the many public art sculptures that decorate NYC’s vibrant streets and parks. But this fall, a new set of statues coming to the Meatpacking District may set a whole new bar for the city’s public art scene.

One hundred life-size elephants will appear in the Meatpacking District from September to October 2024 as part of “The Great Migration,” a global fundraising effort to uplift Indigenous voices and motivate the human race to share space with their animal neighbors.

RECOMMENDED: The best outdoor art in NYC this summer

“The Great Migration” relies on the collaboration between Indigenous artisans, contemporary artists, and cultural institutions, all of whom work together to raise money to fund human-wildlife coexistence projects. The funds are also used in biodiversity conservation and protection efforts of migratory animals that traverse land, skies, oceans and seas.

Each elephant is created by The Coexistence Collective, a group of 200 indigenous artists from the Bettakurumba, Paniya, Kattunayakan and Soliga communities of India’s Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Tamil Nadu. Over the past five years, the collective has made sure each elephant is perfectly detailed to give life to each animal sculpture, drawing from both their own experience and generational knowledge of nature and wildlife.

The elephants are made from lantana camara, a flowering plant and one of the world’s most invasive weeds. When lantana grows in India’s Protected Areas, animals are forced out of their homes and into urban areas, which only exacerbates human-wildlife conflict. By constructing these elephants out of lantana, the weed’s presence in protected areas decreases, and animals are able to roam freely in their own homes.

As the Indian population has doubled to 1.4 billion in the last 30 years, so has the animal population, including rhinos, lions, tigers and elephants. The Great Elephant Migration hopes to emphasize this growing coexistence between humans and wildlife, showcasing the beautiful ways they share space and thrive alongside each other.

The Great Migration currently stands in Newport, Rhode Island at Cliff Walk, but will make it’s way to The Meatpacking District in NYC from September to October this autumn. Later, the elephants will march all the way to Miami, then Montana, and finally end their migration in Los Angeles, California.
