10,000 new homes could be built in midtown NYC

10,000 new homes could be built in midtown NYC

Things might look very different in midtown Manhattan soon: city planners just launched a proposal to rezone a 42-block area near Penn Station, where they hope to build 10,000 new apartments as one way to tackle the city’s housing crisis.

Part of Mayor Eric Adams’ “Manhattan Plan,” the Midtown South Mixed-Use (MSMX) proposal involves the creation of a 24/7 mixed-use neighborhood that includes new public sites as well, roughly. If set into motion and completed, the project would completely change this specific portion of midtown Manhattan—roughly, between West 23rd Street and West 40th Streets between 5th and 8th Avenues—an area still reeling from the aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic, including commercial vacancies and restrictive zoning rules.

“In New York City, the old saying is still true: if you build it, they will come,” said Adams in an official statement. “In midtown South, we are building the neighborhoods of tomorrow with vibrant 24/7 space, affordable housing, and inclusive, dynamic public realm opportunities.”

According to reports, the plan daws inspiration from the Financial District, which, according to the New York Post, “turned into a booming residential area after 9/11 with tax incentives.” That bing said, that specific redevelopment didn’t include affordable housing, “leaving low income renters locked out.”

Whether, when and how, exactly, the plan will be brought to completion is yet to be seen, but we’re sure the genetic makeup of the city will be completely altered by it, from who can even afford to live here to how New Yorkers interact with midtown Manhattan. Who knows? The area may soon become a top-traveled-to destination to experience the best things to do in NYC.

Yes, The NYC Air Quality Is Bad Today — Here’s Why

Did you walk outside today and think, “Why is the air quality so bad in NYC today?” Well, you’re not the only one.

Today’s air quality is ranging from 51 – 54 AQI around NYC, according to AccuWeather, which puts us in the “poor” category for quality.

The reason? Well, CBS News New York is theorizing it as effects from a fire that broke out yesterday afternoon (January 23rd) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

A weather phenomenon called cold air aversion is allegedly the reason behind it—an instance in which smoke rising from the ground gets trapped by cold air keeping it “lower” in the sky. This, in combination with southwest winds, then slowly brought some smoke to the region.

Rest assured, the lower air quality today is not detrimental and many New Yorkers may not even notice the slight uptick in AQI at all. Although, those who are sensitive to ozone or particle pollution could potentially experience respiratory issues, according to the Air Quality Index.

This adds even more fuel into Mother Nature’s incredibly hard winter on NYC, between the frigid cold temperatures and inklings of snowfall. It’s safe to say the coldest January in 13 years is kicking our butts.

Have you noticed the bad air quality in NYC today? Let us know on Instagram!

Drop off a hand-written NYC love letter inside these red mailboxes found around the city

Drop off a hand-written NYC love letter inside these red mailboxes found around the city

For the next week or so, New Yorkers visiting some of the city’s most cherished businesses will notice a number of old-school looking red mailboxes around town. Set up by floral and event company Popupflorist, the stations are part of a unique new activation aptly called “Love Letters of New York City,” a tribute to this great city of ours just in time for Valentine’s Day.

“As an experiential florist based here in NYC, Valentine’s Day is our Super Bowl,” Popupflorist owner and founder Kelsie Hayes said to Time Out. “It’s my favorite holiday, and every year we go all out. This year we came up with the idea of ‘Love Letters of New York City.’ It’s an ode to this city, to New Yorkers, to Love Day, and to the many connections that this city fosters.”

RECOMMENDED: The best things to do for Valentine’s Day in NYC

The concept is relatively simple: now until January 30, city dwellers are invited to drop off completely anonymous, hand-written letters at 13 different mailboxes across Manhattan and Brooklyn. At the end of the month, the Popupflorist team will comb through the notes—basically, chances to say exactly how you feel about anything without anyone ever knowing it is you—and select 30 of their favorites to be displayed at the Love Letters of New York City Gallery on February 8, set to debut at 21 Howard Street in lower Manhattan. The exhibit will also feature floral installations inspired by the love letters.

If you can’t make it to any of the drop-off locations, you are invited to enter a submission for consideration online right here.

“The idea was born from my excitement to bring my recent book, Say It with Flowers, to life,” said Hayes when asked about the inspiration behind the lovely project. “The book […] is inspired by all the weird, wacky and wonderful reasons why people send flowers. Since opening this business nine years ago, I’ve collected the most memorable and special notes that customers have trusted me with to accompany our flowers. Flipping through the pages of the book and reading all the notes inside is like a peek behind the curtain of what it’s like to be a florist. I wanted to bring that same feeling of surprise and excitement with an in-real-life experience for New Yorkers.”

As for the sorts of notes that she expects to read through, Hayes is used to and eager to witness “anything and everything.”

“We’re expecting sweet, endearing, apologetic, sexy, hilarious, dramatic,” she said. “Plus everything else that Valentine’s Day brings.”

Nets To Retire Vince Carter’s No. 15 Jersey: Everything You Need To Know

The Brooklyn Nets are set to honor Vince Carter, one of the greatest players in franchise history, by retiring his iconic No. 15 jersey on Saturday, January 25, 2025, during their game against the Miami Heat at Barclays Center.

This highly anticipated event will celebrate Carter’s contributions to the Nets and his lasting impact on the NBA.

Carter’s Legacy with the Nets

During his five seasons with the New Jersey Nets (2004-2009), Carter delivered the best statistical stretch of his career. He helped lead the Nets to three playoff berths, including two trips to the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 2006 and 2007.

Some of his remarkable achievements with the team include:

  • 🥉 3rd in franchise history with 8,834 points.
  • ⛹ The only 2,000-point season in Nets history (2,070 points in 2006-07).
  • ☝ 90 career 30-point games and 17 40-point games, both team records.

Carter’s dynamic playstyle and memorable moments cemented his place in Nets history, and now his jersey will join legends like Dražen Petrović (#3) and Jason Kidd (#5) in the Barclays Center rafters.

A Weekend full of activities

The jersey retirement will cap off a weekend of events honoring Carter’s career. It all starts with a red-carpet premiere of “From Daytona Beach to Brooklyn” at Brooklyn Paramount.

This 90-minute documentary will chronicle Carter’s life and basketball journey, with a live discussion featuring Carter after the screening.

Also, the Empire State Building will light up in the Nets’ historic red, white, and blue colors, with the number 15 displayed on the spire. Carter will attend a special ceremony at the landmark.

And, before the game, Carter will address the media at a press conference. During halftime, a formal jersey-raising ceremony will take place, attended by Carter’s family, former teammates, and Nets executives.
