New York Liberty Wins Its First-Ever WNBA Championship In Overtime Against The Minnesota Lynx
All eyes are on the New York Liberty, first-time WNBA champions, after their milestone win against the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, October 20th at Barclay’s Center.
Things felt tense in Brooklyn during game 5, but ultimately, the New York Liberty was able to make the score 67-62 during overtime, securing their first win in franchise history.
Considering it’s been over 20 years since they made it to the finals, and after such a successful [trackLink link_url=”https://secretnyc.co/new-york-liberty-guide/”]2024 season[/trackLink], a win was well-deserved and a great reason for New Yorkers to celebrate. Highlights from the game include 17 points from Jonquel Jones — who was named WNBA Finals MVP — and 13 points courtesy of Breanna Stewart.
“It means everything,” Stewart told ESPN, according to USA Today. “I wanted to come here, and I wanted to be the person. We fought through because we wanted to bring it home for this city and this crowd.”
The celebration will continue, as five NYC buildings will light up in blue in honor of the New York Liberty win on Monday, October 21st, including: City Hall, Brooklyn Borough Hall, Queens Borough Hall, Staten Island Borough Hall, and The David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building.
Plus, the team will get a parade, though details are still TBD.
“At a time when the rest of the country is finally acknowledging the endless talent in our WNBA, we are proud to have New York City bring home the trophy,” Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement, according to NBC. “To our WNBA champions, thank you for being a role model to our city, and showcasing the values of grit, determination, and hard work. Now, we can’t wait to celebrate off the court and throw you the parade you deserve down the Canyon of Heroes!”
We’ll see you at the parade!

The Mets Lose Game 6 Of The NLCS Against The LA Dodgers
Sorry, New York: that Subway Series isn’t happening…at least this year.
The Mets vs. Dodgers showdown ended in disappointment for East Coast baseball fans on Sunday, October 20th. Ultimately, the LA Dodgers beat the Amazin’ Mets 10-5 in game 6 of the NLCS to advance to the World Series, which is set to begin on Friday, October 25th at Dodger Stadium against non-other than the New York Yankees.
While we might not be getting the Subway Series we’d hoped for, we’re definitely in for an interesting baseball battle of the coasts. This is the first World Series matchup between the two teams since 1981. (The Dodgers won 4-2, so let’s hope we turn things around for New York 43 years later.)
As far as the Kings of Queens go, things became difficult for Mets pitcher Sean Manaea early on in the game after he gave up a two-run double to Tommy Edman and didn’t return after the third inning. Ultimately, the LA Dodgers’ offense was too powerful for the Mets to overcome.
This has been a particularly exciting season for the Mets, who have not won a World Series since 1986. While there was plenty of love for the Met’s unofficial mascot, Grimace, and even blue sandwiches at a local Queens deli in honor of the team’s success, unfortunately, their 2024 run came to a close midway through the NLCS. Now that the Yankees are World Series-bound and set to go up against the Dodgers, we’ll keep you posted on the schedule and everything else you need to know about the upcoming championship. We’ll cross our fingers for that Subway Series next year.
