Magnolia Bakery and incredibles first collaborated for a limited-time last fall.

“Magnolia Bakery has been a New York institution for nearly 30 years, and after the overwhelming response to our collaboration chocolate bars last year, we’re thrilled to bring them home to New York and New Jersey,” said Dominic O’Brien, Senior Vice President of Revenue at Green Thumb.

6 ways New Yorkers celebrated the NY Liberty WNBA championship win

6 ways New Yorkers celebrated the NY Liberty WNBA championship win

We live in a city with the most vibrant cultural scene in the country but, when it comes to team sports, we haven’t always stood out. At long last, our losing streak was shattered last night after the New York Liberty won the WNBA Championships against the Minnesota Lynx, with a nail-biting final score of 67-62.

Needless to say, the city has been buzzing ever since: this is the first time the team has ever won a WNBA Championship in 28-year-history after losing its previous five appearances at the finals, and the first time in who-know-how-long since any New York sports team snatched a top spot on a national stage.

Although celebrations are still to come (the Mayor announced that the city will host a ticker-tape parade honoring the team this Thursday), New Yorkers took the time to mark the awesome event last night as well.

We imagine our girl Ellie is probably nursing a nasty hangover somewhere today.

Here are some ways the city celebrated the long overdue and absolutely monumental WNBA.

RECOMMENDED: New York Liberty’s Ellie the Elephant on how to have a Hot Girl Summer

1. By singing “We are the Champions” at the Barclays Center

Following the win, thousands of adoring fans began singing the classic victory song, Queen’s “We are the Champions.” As New Yorkers, we haven’t had reason to belt the tune in a long while, so it must have felt pretty cathartic to be there.

2. By screaming at the top of their lungs

@takethismother I know everyone can relate to me. They had your girl STRESSED #wnbafinals @nyliberty #liberty ♬ original sound – Audrey

Let’s be real, we might have won this game, but everyone who watched was at the edge of their seats the whole time. Our victory didn’t come easy and, although it would’ve been nice to have won by a larger margin, the high stakes made the win feel all the more special.

3. By dropping some pretty sickening edits on social media

Nike surprised all of us by dropping a pretty epic edit of Lady Liberty sporting a championship ring. I guess we know who the brand was rooting for.

4. By hyping Ellie the Elephant while she did a celebratory dance

“Go Ellie! Go Ellie! Go Ellie!,” we all said in unison.

5. By belting out our very own Alicia Keys song outside of the Barclays Center after the game

Yes, some of us are sick of listening to “Empire State of Mind”—especially if you happen to work in Times Square or around midtown, where vendors blast it on loop to lure in tourists—but it just hits different when New Yorkers sing it to celebrate their favorite sports team.

6. By keeping the party going throughout the week, including a parade

Since the game happened on a Sunday night, we expect that celebrations around the city are only going to get more intense throughout this week. We specifically recommend hanging out around the Barclays Centers to catch more spontaneous celebrations. Just in case you need it, here’s our guide to the neighborhood around the Barclays Center

The city is also going to host a series of celebrations, including a ticker-tape parade, this Thursday starting at 10am near City Hall.

The New York Liberty Are WBNA Champs, And So Is Ellie The Elephant

After a monumental season, the New York Liberty are WNBA champions — the team’s first win in franchise history. But we can’t forget about the immense, unwavering support from the Liberty’s utterly irresistible mascot, Ellie the Elephant, a star in her own right. Throughout the season, Ellie was on hand to keep momentum up and cheer on the players to victory.

Who is Ellie the Elephant?

More than just a mascot, Ellie has transformed into a pivotal support system for the New York Liberty. She twerks to Beyoncé, Tyla, and Missy Elliot. She wears designer outfits. She rocks an awesome braid. She brings in the likes on Instagram and TikTok. Truth be told, Ellie is a sensation.

When the WNBA made a move over to its new home, Barclays Center in Brooklyn in 2021, Ellie took the mascot reigns from a golden retriever, Maddie. And there was a reason for the choice: elephant’s strength and knowledge and ties to the borough: When the Brooklyn Bridge was first constructed, showman P.T. Barnum ordered 21 elephants march across the structure to prove its strength and reliability — traits Ellie exhibits well.

“Ellie has transcended what it means to be a mascot and rather an extension of the team with her iconic dance moves, fan interactions, unmatched style and countless viral moments reverberating throughout pop culture,” the WNBA said.

It’s Ellie’s world — and city — and we’re just living in it, but there are certainly no complaints here!

If you still want to celebrate this historic win, you’re in luck. On Monday, October 21st, iconic NYC buildings will illuminate in sea foam blue in honor of this WNBA win, and a New York Liberty WNBA Championship Parade is on its way to the Canyon of Heroes. (More details to come.)

See renderings of a more pedestrian-friendly Fifth Avenue

See renderings of a more pedestrian-friendly Fifth Avenue

Already a pretty pedestrian-friendly stretch of the city, Fifth Avenue will soon undergo a major redesign—the first of its kind in 200 years—aimed at transforming the area into a “pedestrian-centered boulevard.”

Mayor Eric Adams and the Future of Fifth Partnership recently released new renderings of the avenue between Bryant Park and Central Park West. According to the proposal, officials will cut the number of traffic lanes from five to three, shorten crosswalks, expand sidewalks by nearly 50% and add plants and lights all throughout the street to make it safer and more aesthetically pleasing.

Even more specifically, expect the sidewalks to almost double in width, automatically reducing crossing lengths and therefore increasing pedestrian safety. Greening Fifth Avenue will also work on creating shade cover to protect against heat while installing stormwater infrastructure to prevent flooding (which is clearly a problem that New York City officials are constantly monitoring and trying to prevent).

“Once complete, this project […] is projected to pay for itself in less than five years through increased property and sales tax revenue,” reads an official press release.

If the renderings remind you of the Champs-Élysées in Paris or London’s Oxford Street—that’s on purpose. The proposed design, in fact, takes inspiration from various cities around the world while also taking into account the historic landmarks and art deco influences that can be found all around Fifth Avenue.

“People across the globe identify Fifth Avenue as a premier destination for strolling and shopping,” said Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi in an official statement. “But its larger-than-life reputation means that its sidewalks have reached their capacity, hosting more people per hour in peak seasons than Madison Square Garden. By expanding sidewalks, we can turn this avenue into an iconic boulevard, a place for all, for all hours and especially for pedestrians—who can now safely stay on sidewalks rather than navigate cars to get by and through.”

In an official statement, Adams also addressed the statistics that fueled the project, noting how, at the moment, 70% of folks traveling through Fifth Avenue are pedestrians that can only really utilize less than half the space on the street.

“On the holidays, that’s 23,000 people every hour […] cramming like sardines into constrained sidewalks,” he said.

But New Yorkers and tourists alike will have to be patient for another few holiday seasons, it seems: the final project design is expected to be completed by next summer, with plans to kick off construction set to begin after that.
