NYC’s Only Korean Library Is One Of Manhattan’s Best Kept Secrets

As a New Yorker you may avoid Midtown at all costs, but this may make you think twice about paying the neighborhood a visit: it’s home to NYC’s only Korean library!

It’s located in the Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY) and can definitely be hard to miss–that’s because the first two floors resemble an art gallery. But tucked away up on the third floor is where you can find the library.

The shelves are stocked with books in both English and Korean, and you can find anything from books about Korean culture and books to help you learn Korean to recipe books, manhwas, and webtoons.

Beyond the books they also have CDs and famous Korean films!

And the best part: it’s all essentially free!

You can borrow up to ten books and five CDs or/and DVDs at once for up to two weeks (CDs and DVDs are seven days). Just be sure to return them on time or you’ll get charged 25 cents per day for each item.

If you need some extra time, however, you can request to renew your book loan one time so long as it’s not on reserve for another borrower. Renewal requests can be made over the phone, in person, or online prior to the item’s due date.

The library is open to the general public and you can read more about it here.

Please note: the Korean library will be closed for renovations from August 27th to 31st as part of KCCNY’s ongoing efforts to improve their facilities and enhance visitors’ experience.

NJ Transit Will Be FREE For An Entire Week This Month

New Jersey Governor, Phil Murphy, just announced a Fare Holiday coming to NJ Transit that will grant commuters free rides for an entire week as a “thank you” to those who depend on New Jersey’s public transportation.

The promotion will run from August 26 through September 2, 2024, in which all fares will be waived. NJ Transit recognizes the significant impact its service disruptions have caused this summer and hopes this fare holiday is just one way to make amends as they continue to strive for an improved customer experience.

“Understanding that our commuters have faced many disruptions this summer, we are providing a one week fare holiday for NJ TRANSIT riders,” said Governor Murphy. “As we work diligently with Amtrak to investigate and address the issues that have occurred this summer, especially on the Northeast Corridor, we hope this fare holiday offers our commuters some relief.  We also encourage New Jerseyans to take advantage of this opportunity, and we continue to be thankful to the many New Jerseyans who depend on public transit.”

To ensure service for New Jerseyans remain up to par with expectations, NJ Transit will add resources to increase testing of transformers in substations and strategizing how to expedite repairs and upgrades.

Riders already with an August monthly pass will receive a 25% discount on their September pass, whether they purchase via the app, ticket window or Ticket Vending Machine.

Much of the season’s service disruptions have occurred on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor (NEC). Already, Amtrak has escalated its efforts to inspect and repair track signal systems and substations along the NEC, in addition to an increase in NJ Transit’s platform equipment inspections.

For recent service issues on the River LINE light rail, NJ Transit has added an interim bus plan to aid commuters during weekdays.

This iconic Western wear brand is opening a NYC pop-up

It sounds like New York is entering its Western era: following the opening of popular L.A. Western-style bar Desert 5 Spot in Williamsburg, the city is getting ready for the arrival of Kebo Sabe, the high-end Western wear clothing brand that operates outposts in Colorado, Montana, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.

From September 1 to 30, the brand will set up a pop-up at 69 Gansevoort Street where New Yorkers will get to shop through luxury Western wear pieces daily from 11am to 6pm. From personalized boots and hats to Kemo Sabe’s vintage and fine jewelry collections, buckles, belts and a vast array of handcrafted accessories, the pop-up will add flair to the city’s already dynamic fashion scene.

“This is a historic moment for Kemo Sabe as we bring the essence of the American West to New York City for the first time,” said Arna Einarsdottir, Vice President of Kemo Sabe, in an official statement. “We’re thrilled to share our passion for high-quality craftsmanship and authentic Western style with a new audience, and we can’t wait for New Yorkers to experience what makes Kemo Sabe truly special.”

WWD also reports that a permanent New York City Kemo Sabe store is currently in the works, one heavily reliant on the reception of the upcoming pop-up by—so make sure to stop by the activation to show your support.

“We’re really focused on customer service and the experience and making sure that everyone feels like they’ve walked into our home,” said Wendy Kunkle, the company’s President, to WWD. “We really spent a lot of time developing our staff so that they understand this is the most important thing to us. We want to make sure these customers are having a hell of a good time, because why wouldn’t you? It’s retail—you’re supposed to be having a good time when you’re shopping.”

From the release of Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter album to fashion’s obsession with the Wild West during recent Fashion Weeks, the country at large is clearly delving into cowboy core—and New York is just following along.

NY Named One Of The Best States In The Nation To Raise Happy, Healthy Pets

Though many NYC dogs will never know what it’s like to have a backyard, with all of NYC’s parks and dog-friendly bars and restaurants we can’t deny that living the dog life in NYC ain’t too ruff–I mean, where else can enjoy cocktails and seafood while your dog munches on grilled steak, chicken breast, or a burger than in NYC?!

So we weren’t exactly surprised that when the Trusted Housesitters analyzed the best states in the U.S. for raising happy, healthy pets, New York made it to the top ten!

The Trusted Housesitters analyzed ten key metrics across the U.S. to find the happiest states for pets in what they call their Happy Pet Index. The metrics included:

  • Veterinary care
  • Parks
  • Walkability
  • Pet ownership rates
  • Shelter adoptions
  • Pet-friendly rentals
  • Animal protection laws
  • Climate
  • Remote workers
  • Pet sitter accessibility

New York came in ninth place with a score of 57.6 out of 100. And though NY’s overall score is just slightly over the halfway mark, we did score 100% on one thing: walkability!

Unsurprisingly, NY also scored as one of the best places to find pet sitters, with 97% accessibility. All we can think about though is how a 4-day work week would cut down on how often NY pet owners actually have to look for pet sitters in the first place!

As for the best state overall for those with four paws and a fluffy tail, that title goes to Colorado, the happiest state for pets with a score of 75.4 due to its pet-friendly neighborhoods and strong animal protection laws.

This City In New York Is Older Than The United States Itself

New York State is full of history, from its part in the American Revolution, immigration, urban evolution and so on. But did you know there’s a city in New York State that’s actually older than the country itself?

In fact, Albany, our state’s capital is 167 years older the the U.S., as it was claimed in 1609 and the United States only became a country in 1776. However, Albany didn’t become New York’s state capital until years after the United States was created in 1797.

The city’s 400-year-old history goes back to when English explorer, Henry Hudson, who the river is named after, first arrived in the area. The town went on to be a hub for fur trade and eventually agriculture, exporting wheat to New York City.

Interestingly enough, Albany was the birthplace of various inventions including the telegraph, electric motor, and celluloid plastic.

In modern times, Albany is home to more than 100,000 residents—right in the middle of Schenectady (68,000) and Syracuse (144,000). Did you know NYC’s Broadway (the longest street in New York City covering 150 miles) actually stretches all the way to Albany, New York?

Beyond that, Albany was ranked as the best place to live in New York State in 2024 by U.S. News & World Reports. So if you’re ever nearby, be sure to check out this historical city.
