Get Ready For Over A Mile-Long Trek To Your Gate At This NYC Airport

The airport itself can be a stressful ordeal, but when you’re tight on time and you’ve got a far gate, it’s even worse. Unfortunately, JFK has one of the longest walks out of all airports in the country.

According to a study from Kuru Footwear that surveyed 800 travelers and their walking distances from check in to their gates at various U.S. airports, NYC’s JFK Airport has the fifth longest walking distance in the states.

Apparently, passengers can walk up to 1.38 miles at JFK to reach its furthest gate from check in. If it takes an average of 15-22 minutes to walk one mile, it could take travelers at JFK up to 30 minutes just to arrive at their gate.

Longest & shortest airport walks in the U.S.

Coming in at first place, Dallas Fortworth Airport has the longest walk to its furthest gate out of any U.S. airport. Passengers flying via Dallas Fortworth could walk up to 2.16 miles just to get to their gate! Washington-Dulles International Airport came in second with a distance of 1.62 miles and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (1.52 miles) and Denver International Airport (1.45 miles) came in third and fourth. So for the 20% of Americans that arrive at the airport only one hour before their flight, they might be cutting it close at these five U.S. airports.

Interesting fun fact, 33% of Americans spend an hour walking around the airport before their flight. So, if you’re one to grab a snack at a Hudson News or a glass of wine at the bar before you board, you’ll want to account for that extra leisure time along with the time it takes to walk to your gate.

The study also took a look at U.S. airports with the shortest walks, which are as follows:

  1. Blue Grass Airport, Kentucky
    • Walking distance: 0.11 miles
  2. Westchester County Airport, New York
    • Walking distance: 0.12 miles
  3. Harrisburg International Airport, Pennsylvania
    • Walking distance: 0.13 miles
  4. Lihue Airport, Hawaii
    • Walking distance: 0.18 miles
  5. Burbank Airport, California
    • Walking distance: 0.20

It’s a spectacle, a celebration, and an unforgettable experience that everyone should witness firsthand – whether you’re a sports lover or not! Plus, Lavazza, the official coffee of the US Open, is bringing the “La Dolce Vita” lifestyle into the mix this year with an exciting Fan Week activation to kick off the tournament.

This year, the thrill of the match will commence with Fan Week starting August 19. This is your opportunity to become fully immersed in the name of the game ahead of tennis’ biggest tournament, with tons of events and activations that allow you to get up close and personal with the sport itself. Not to mention, many of these activities are totally free

If you’re already looking forward to the many Fan Week festivities ahead of the US Open, don’t miss out on Lavazza’s free coffee pop-up! Keep reading for more details.

Lavazza Coffee Fan Week activation

Lavazza invites Fan Week goers to indulge in la Dolce Vita – the Italian way of life – through its free activation booth. Lavazza Dolcevita is all about slowing down and appreciating life’s simple pleasures, from savoring a spectacular cup of coffee to enjoying a match between tennis MVPs.

Inspired by this way of life, you’ll find a 360 photo booth, prizes, and coffee drinks at the activation, the latter available at an exclusive Lavazza Coffee cart. You might even discover your new favorite blend after sampling a variety of ground coffee blends from the Lavazza Dolcevita Collection!

The la Dolce Vita lifestyle is also a core pillar of style and fashion, which is why it’s only fitting that Lavazza Coffee’s Fan Week activation also features an interactive photo booth. There you’ll have the chance to snap some very Instagrammable US Open fit pics and 360-videos, commemorating your Fan Week experience and the memories it created.

The official coffee of the US Open

Though it might seem unexpected, Lavazza and tennis share many connections. Lavazza is the official coffee of the US Open, and World No. 1 singles player Jannik Sinner has served as a brand ambassador since 2022.

The Italian-born tennis powerhouse is the first Italian player to qualify for the Australian Open’s singles final, and said he’s looking forward to the 2024 US Open. Sinner is also credited with a massive spike in tennis’ popularity across Italy.

The US Open is tennis’ Grand Slam championship, while Lavazza is a champion of coffee. Both its role as official coffee of the US Open and Sinner’s ambassadorship speak to Lavazza’s long standing tradition of success. Its commitment to quality and craftsmanship are woven into the brand’s Italian heritage, which encourages coffee drinkers to savor the moment, engage the mind and the senses, and channel the Lavazza Dolcevita lifestyle. And with the activation’s Italian coast-inspired photo booth, you’ll have photos to prove that you did!

New Jersey transit will be free for an entire week

New Jersey transit will be free for an entire week

As an apology for some pretty gnarly service this summer, New Jersey governor Phil Murphy is giving commuters a full week of free transit.

Fares will be waived on all New Jersey transit systems between August 26 and September 2.

RECOMMENDED: This portion of the G train route will shut down through Labor Day

“Understanding that our commuters have faced many disruptions this summer, we are providing a one-week fare holiday for NJ TRANSIT riders,” said Governor Murphy in a statement. “As we work diligently with Amtrak to investigate and address the issues that have occurred this summer, especially on the Northeast Corridor, we hope this fare holiday offers our commuters some relief. We also encourage New Jerseyans to take advantage of this opportunity, and we continue to be thankful to the many New Jerseyans who depend on public transit.”

Imagine that! Some acknowledgement of a problem and offering a sort of olive branch goes a long way for commuters.

For monthly pass holders who already have an August pass, there will be an automatic 25% discount applied on their September monthly pass purchase through the mobile app, at Ticket Vending Machines or ticket windows, Jersey officials say.

We think that’s pretty cool.

If you aren’t aware, a lot of the service disruptions have happened on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. It’s still not clear what made them happen, according to officials, but “significant short-term actions have already been taken” and there has been “noteworthy” progress through increased equipment inspections on platforms and overhead wire, track signal systems, and substations along the NEC.

“These collaborative efforts have already led to a noticeable decrease in infrastructure-related incidents,” the governor’s office says.

There’s also been other longer-term actions taken, including the more transformer testing in substations and added evaluation of when and how long work can take place and adjusting that to speed up repairs and upgrades. NJ TRANSIT has also been working with Amtrak to find more funding that could help speed up the replacement of wires, substations, and transmission and signal lines.

That being said, the River LINE light rail service hasn’t been meeting performance standards over the last several weeks, officials say. In the meantime, there has been bus services added to help during the week. “At the same time, we are holding NJ TRANSIT’s contracted operator accountable to expedite necessary repairs and upgrades to the light rail vehicles to restore reliable weekday light rail service as quickly as possible,” the governor’s office says.

As expected, these service issues won’t be fixed right away, so in the meantime, enjoy your free commute!

An Attaboy veteran is bringing a new cocktail bar to Long Island City

An Attaboy veteran is bringing a new cocktail bar to Long Island City

Since 2019, The Greats of Craft team has been filling us up with the craftiest of beers, first in midtown and now in Long Island City. With 30 taps, 200+ cans and bottles, and a rotating cast of craft beers, ciders, wines and spirits, both locations welcome beer enthusiasts and novices alike. More than just suds, the multi-hyphenate concept also serves coffee and pastries in the morning plus plenty of space to get some work done. And for those of us on the go (which is most New Yorkers), the retail side of the business has packs of beers ready for the taking. But its latest concept is less about beer and more about cocktails. Reimagining the second floor of its Long Island City location, the latest concept is all about the Sicilian way of life.

Landing in Long Island City is Bar Enzo (10-15 43rd Avenue, 2nd Floor, Long Island City). According to owner and Queens native Joe Schinco, the new Italian-American cocktail bar pays homage to his Sicilian grandparents and the lively parties they used to host.

“We wanted to create a space that not only honors my grandfather’s legacy and our Italian-American roots, but also offers a genuinely warm, welcoming experience where guests can relax, enjoy drinks, and feel at home,” said Schinco in a press release.

Housed in the same warehouse as the LIC location of Greats of Craft, the new concept lies behind a discreet door. Climbing up a set of stairs to the second floor, Bar Enzo greets its patrons with a hallway lined with black and white family photos. Opening up into a cozy 35-seater bar, the space charms with the vibe of a ’60s cocktail lounge infused with a bit of grandma core with green velvet booths, leather chairs and brass fixtures.

Behind the marble bar, you’ll find Attaboy alum Steven Lewis. And while the menu is heavy on gin and amaro cocktails and riffs on the classics, Lewis pays his respects to the family here as well.

“When I first set out to create the program, my instinct was to dig into classic Italian club cocktails and elevate them with a cheeky twist. But I quickly changed direction when I realized just how deeply personal this space and its ethos are to Joe and his family,” said Lewis in a press release. “The drinks became a vehicle to tell the story of that family experience, driven by anecdotes  and preferences of the people in the photographs that greet you as you walk in.”

Nods to the family include The Steinway & Ditmars, an Italian Michelada featuring a Mediterranean-style sweet vermouth infused with Nonna’s homemade meatball spice blend. You can also drink like Nonno Enzo by sipping on his favorite drink—The Bambino made with Tuscan red wine, cola and ginger.

While the bar is still in the soft-opening phase with limited hours and menu, the kickoff party will be held on September 5. So there’s no better time to come down and get to know the family.
