Expect A Hotter September Than Usual, Say Meteorologists

Us New Yorkers are too smart to be fooled by the “false fall” that hits NYC every August, but it is still nice to get a break from the relentless heat. But don’t get used to it–it’s definitely not sticking around.

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but according to the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center September is on track to be hotter than usual throughout the state.

Looking at a graph provided by the NWS, September is set to bring with it a 50-60% chance of likely above average temperatures to New York. To put things into perspective, average September temperatures in NY are a high of 76° and low of 61°.

And don’t worry, it’s not just us New Yorkers getting picked on–the entire East Coast is likely to get hit with warmer than average temperatures. And the entire nation as a whole may see temperatures higher than usual.

And hotter temperatures aren’t the only thing to expect–New York’s precipitation outlook is also leaning above normal.

The rain probabilities do vary in New York, however.

As for us in New York City, we lie right in between an area that’s set to see a 40% to 50% likelihood of more rain than usual and an area with a 33% to 40% likelihood of more rain. NWS has found that September typically brings about 4.31 inches of rain to Central Park over the course of the month.

Parts of the state like in Western New York, on the other hand, have an equal chance of seeing either more or less rain than usual.

So, sadly you won’t want to dig out those sweaters and boots any time soon, but what you will want to do is keep an umbrella on hand!

And be sure to keep an eye on the beginning of fall foliage peaking! Find out when that’s predicted to happen here.

There’s a chance dive bar Lucy’s will reopen in the East Village

There's a chance dive bar Lucy's will reopen in the East Village

There’s a specific breed of long-standing New York dive bars that affords whoever gets shitfaced there some serious New York City street cred.

Lucy’s in the East Village, which was around since the ’80s before its owners were evicted earlier this year, is exactly that type of institution. Although news of its potential closure sent shockwaves through the nightlife community, a new development has given us hope that the beloved bar might open its doors once more.

RECOMMENDED: An Attaboy veteran is bringing a new cocktail bar to Long Island City

Lucy’s’ plight began after a new landlord purchased the building at 135 Avenue A by 8th Street last December. Shortly after, locals noticed an eviction notice posted to the door, naming the bar’s owner and namesake, Ludwika “Lucy” Mickevicius, and giving her one month to vacate the building.

The bar’s lease expired in 2015 and the owner was on a month-to-month rental agreement with the previous landlord, according to the New York Post. The outlet also reports that the latest landlord wanted to raise the rent by $25,000 per month—which likely contributed to the bar’s closure.

In May, the hospitality group Golden Age applied for a liquor license to take over the space where Lucy’s once was, and they seemed intent on keeping the bar’s old name, according to Eater.

Last week, the local community board approved transferring Lucy’s liquor license to the new operators and Golden Age’s CEO Jon Neidich discussed bringing back the bar as it once was.

“[Neidich] doesn’t want to change anything,” Max Bookman, the attorney for Lucy’s, told Gothamist. “He just wants to put in the time capsule Lucy’s as it’s always been.”

What’s next? The community board has to approve of the plan and we have faith things will look even better in the coming months. Fingers crossed, New York.
