Six stunning photos of this week’s Super Blue Moon in NYC
Celestial events are often obscured by NYC’s skyscrapers and light noise, but in the rare moments (the once-in-a-blue-moon moments) that we can catch them, we should.
NYC was blessed with a rare super blue moon on Monday, August 19, but we’ll be able to see the big bright moon for the next two days.
If you didn’t know, a super blue moon is both a blue moon (a frequent moon) and a super moon. Super moons are when the moon is is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth. At this stage, the moon appears larger and up to one-third brighter than the moon on a regular night. They don’t happen together often, just about once every 10 years or so.

All this being said, when it happens, it’s worth watching the sky. Luckily some photographers did just that and captured it through their lenses for us. See the best shots below.

GoFundMe For Impromptu Bed-Stuy Goldfish Pond Hopes To Raise $5,000
You’ve probably seen the viral video circulating of mysterious fish in a fire hydrant puddle on the corner of Tompkins Avenue and Hancock Street in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. This has since become an entire phenomenon now dubbed as the “Bed-Stuy Aquarium”—yes, there’s even a sign that says so. So how did this happen and what’s the latest update? Let’s get into it!
August 7, 2024
In early August, a video posted to X went viral after showing a pond of mysterious goldfish in a puddle under a leaky fire hydrant in Bed-Stuy.
Around the same time the video went viral, a reddit account under the name Plantsnotpants spoke out on their concerns for the fish and the poor conditions of the makeshift pond. The user claimed to have a 10-gallon tank and wrote about attempting to rescue the fish before they could be transported to a proper home.
Moreover, a group of local men took it upon themselves to protect what’s become the community goldfish pond. This group of neighborhood men can assumably be who Plantsnotpants mentions in their thread about people standing watch by the pond.
August 8, 2024
Department of Environmental Protection crews stopped by to fix the leaking fire hydrant. “We love goldfish also, but we know there is a better home for them than on a sidewalk,” they said.
That same day, one of the the local men in support of the pond returned to turn the fire hydrant back on so the water wouldn’t dry out.
August 9, 2024
The New York Post reported about four local men standing guard. Apparently they set up security cameras and have plans to add a filtration system by fall.
A GoFundMe page was launched “to help build a better habitat for the fishes to thrive.” The funds raised would also go towards an outdoor ventilation system and food for the fish.
August 21st, 2024
The fundraiser has already raised $2,765 towards its $5,000 goal. An anonymous donor using the former President’s name currently holds the top donation of $600.
The origin story of how the fish got there in the first place is still unclear. The Patch reported it as “prankster Brooklynites [that] added several live goldfish to a puddle made by a leaking fire hydrant [before the] chaos ensued.

NY Is One Of The Most Fun States in America, According To Study
Us New Yorkers are obviously the best at everything, like having fun–there’s a reason why NYC is called the City that Never Sleeps–and this new study is proving just how fun we are! According to a new study, New York is the fourth most fun state in America with a total score of 58.01. Okay, so we may not have come in first (contrary to our personal opinions) but we did make it to the top five.
As for how NY ranked on a more specific level, we came in second in the nightlife ranking and third in the entertainment and recreation ranking.
Out of all 50 states, New York has the second most restaurants per capita (just behind California), though that isn’t much of a surprise with all of the beautiful restaurants, rooftop restaurants, waterfront restaurants, and all the other restaurants you can discover in NYC alone.
New York also has the third most movie theaters per capita, the fourth most golf courses & country clubs per capita, the most performing-arts theaters per capita (tied with California), the fourth most fitness centers per capita, and the second most marinas per capita.
Who knew we were so versatile (well, besides us, of course)!
As for the most fun state overall, that title went to Florida–that’s probably why New Yorkers apparently want to move to Florida the most! Guess we’ll have to pay our friends over in Miami a visit more often.
In order to determine the most fun states in America, WalletHub compared all 50 states across two key categories: Entertainment & Recreation and Nightlife.
Each category was then evaluated on a number of metrics–such as Amusement Parks per Capita, Number of Attractions, Average Beer & Wine Price, and Music Festivals per Capita–to give each state an overall score out of 100.
The data was collected from the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, National Park Service, TripAdvisor, and more. See the full study here.

Catch ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ in NYC for a one-night only screening with the original cast
Watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show in New York in the fall has almost become a rite of passage: there’s just something about the 1975 horror musical that touches on the cultish and gets New Yorkers ready for the colder weather.
This year in particular, though, city dwellers will have the chance to catch the flick in its original glory: the show is celebrating its 49th anniversary while on three separate national tours that will feature original cast members Barry Bostwick (that would be Brad Major), Nell Campbell (Columbia!) and Patricia Quinn (the one-and-only Magenta).
The New York stop of the tour will take over King’s Theatre in Brooklyn on October 31. Bostwick will be the actor present at that particular showing, for which you can already purchase tickets right here.
“Fifty years ago, I auditioned for The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the 60-seat Royal Court Theatre upstairs in London,” Quinn reminisced in an official statement. “I asked my agent, ‘what’s it about?’ He replied, ‘something to do with a circus.’ He wasn’t wrong. I’ve been in this circus ever since! Cirque du Rocky Horror. I’m lucky! Don’t dream it, be it.”
In addition to watching the unedited version of the film, tour attendees will get to explore a traveling museum filled with artifacts and costumes from the film. Also on deck: a costume contest judged by one of the actors and the chance to participate in a live performance of the show alongside the local shadow cast. How cool does that sound?
“Rocky has changed lives, not just ours, and had a profound effect on how we accept our differences in this world,” Bostwick said in a statement. “We were fitted for our corsets and high heels and enthusiastically started singing songs that have endured for all these years. And ‘dammit Janet!’ I have made nerds cool.”
Just in case you live under a rock or, perhaps, are a bit too young to know what the film is about, here’s a bit of a synopsis: Newly-engaged Brad and Janet (Susan Sarandon) find themselves stuck in a storm with a flat tire, therefore deciding to take shelter inside the mansion of transvestite scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry). Once there, they come face-to-fact with a cast of bizarre characters, including the scientist’s latest experiment—a man named Rocky.
New York has the best pizza in the world, and we have the list to prove it
Just as the prophecy foretold, “Pizza in the morning. Pizza in the evening. Pizza at supper time. When pizza is on a bagel you can have pizza anytime.” And while the last line doesn’t apply to everyone (except for me, Bagel Bites for life), in New York, the best time to eat a piece of pizza is anytime.
From a quick lunch on the way to work to a late night slice to save your life, New York is chock full of slice joints and pizzerias abound. And it’s a known fact that we reign supreme when it comes to all things pizzas and pies. Our city houses the best pizzeria in the U.S., three years a row and counting. Our 5Ks include pizza checkpoints. We ride so hard for it, we spurned in the hashtag, #forkgate, after former mayor Bill de Blasio ate his pizza with a (gasp!) fork and knife.
But with over 2,000 pizzerias in the city, many of which can be found on our respective blocks, it can be a bit dizzying to pick just one. And with all the options out there, we’ve come across plenty of fine slices, plenty of good ones and plenty that make us go “meh.” So if you are looking to sink your teeth on the city’s best, boy, do we have the list from you.
This month we’ve dropped our best pizza places in NYC, made to suit every pizza calling. From formal sit down revues to iconic slices that are meant to be folded, we’ve got em’ all and then some. Check out the full-list—which includes our no. 1 pick Di Fara Pizza, our Time Out Market fav, Fornino, and the one who started the combo of hot honey trend and pizza, Roberta’s—and plan your next pizza crawl accordingly!
This Was The Most Common Airline Complaint Of Last Year
Each calendar year, the Department of Transportation accepts public submissions including complaints, inquiries, and opinions from the public on air travel for that allotted time period. They recently released their Full Year 2023 Airline Consumer Submissions Data, spilling just how satisfied passengers were with services this year and some of their top complaints.
Actually, last year marked the highest number of submissions on record, excluding 2020, with 96,853 submissions in total. For comparison, the DOT only received 86,240 submissions for 2022.
To break down what those nearly 100,000 submissions covered, 67,661 were in regards to U.S. carriers, 24,991 concerned foreign air carriers, and 3,162 were about travel companies. It’s important to note that complaints oftentimes make up the majority of the submissions. In fact, an average of 91% of submissions were complaints over the past three years.
A top air travel complaint of 2023 dealt with disability-related issues. In total, 2,685 complaints about the topic were filed. That’s 587 more complaints for disability-related issues filed in 2023 than the year prior.
Other complaints dealt with discrimination-related incidents. A total of 233 of those were recorded in 2023, which is more than the 176 filed in 2022.
The DOT currently uses an outdated system to collect these annual submissions but are working to modernize it with a Technology Modernization Fund (TMF) investment. In fact, so many complaints were received this year that the report had to be delayed in order to review and process them all.
See the full data report here.
