This Year, There Are 24 New Schools In NYC Serving 11,000+ Students

Class is in session, and new schools in NYC are ready to accommodate over 11,000 students for the 2024-2025 academic year.

“With modern and flexible spaces, state-of-the-art technology, science labs, music rooms, sensory gyms, and more, these new schools are going to be incredible spaces for students and staff alike, will play a crucial role in fostering a sense of well-being for our children, and will help us build a safer, more affordable, and more livable city,” NYC Mayor Eric Adams said during a press conference.

The first day of school in NYC is truly a milestone with these new additions across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx: it marks the most new K-12 seats opened by the SCA since 2003, an addition to the 20,000 the mayor has added throughout his administration.

And it looks like even more children will be accommodated going forward, as the newly adopted 2025-2029 Capital Plan will provide funding for over 33,000 seats. However, the Mayor and his administration will have to be mindful of the state mandate that demands smaller class sizes within five years.

This announcement of new schools comes on the heels of even more exciting news for students: over 70 schools have joined NYC’s Open Street Plans for the fall.

“Through our Open Streets program, we have created a new framework to give this space back to our school children to safely learn, develop new skills, and make pick-ups and drop-offs much easier for parents and guardians,” NYC Department of Transportation [DOT] Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said in a statement.

Next year, the DOT will offer funding to schools for Open Streets management, operations, and programming for the first time, applications for 2025 Open Streets will open in October.

More students, more space, and more learning opportunities beg the question: does that mean more cell phones in school? Thus far, NYC schools hasn’t banned cell phones…yet.

Mountain Dew Will Pay You $10K To Relocate To The Mountain Time Zone

If you’ve been house hunting you may want to start searching in the Mountain Time Zone because five lucky people interested in making the western trek will receive $10,000 to do so! And considering us New York City dwellers are paying 164% more than the average American to live here, now is looking like a pretty good time to take the cross-country plunge.

We know it sounds too good to be true, but it’s not! The offer is due to Mountain Dew’s new mission to encourage fans to “get off their asses and live life to the fullest.” The soda brand has officially adopted the Mountain Time Zone as its own, claiming that those who live there are happier–that’s according to measurement platform StatSocial who says Mountain Time Zone dwellers are +6% more cheerful than the typical American.

And they’re taking their “DO THE DEW” slogan a step further by rewarding five lucky people who make the move to find out for themselves if the grass really is greener on the otherside.

Now through December 31st, 2024, anyone who crosses into the time zone–whether by plane, train, car, or on foot–can get a free 20-ounce Mountain Dew in any flavor as long as they’ve previously registered with their email online. And five lucky people who really enjoy their trip and decide to stay for good will win free Mountain Dew for a year, branded outdoor gear, and $10,000 to cover the cost of their move.

In the United States, Mountain Time Zone includes the entire area of the states of New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and Montana. It also includes parts of Idaho, Oregon, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Texas, Kansas, and Nevada.

JP Bittencourt, Vice President of Marketing at Mountain Dew, stated:

With the great outdoors at the core of everything we do, we want to encourage everyone to embrace the Mountain Time mindset by giving away free Mountain Dew to anyone who crosses into the Mountain Time Zone. Additionally, we want to reward those who take the leap and move to the happiest time zone in the country with their friends by paying for their move.

As a brand “born in the great outdoors,” Mountain Dew, along with their new brand character The Mountain Dude, are hoping to get fans outside and close to nature and its sights, sounds, and smells of the mountains. Those interested in submitting an entry must follow specific requirements.

Those who aren’t ready to leave our beloved city behind but are still looking to score a deal on a new apartment should check out the new affordable housing lotteries at Hudson Yards and Harlem!

An immersive Japanese manga experience is opening in NYC

An immersive Japanese manga experience is opening in NYC

Anime lovers residing in New York, rejoice! This fall, Kodansha, one of Japan’s largest publishers of manga, will debut a special immersive pop-up experience dedicated to all things anime at 45 Grand Street near West Broadway in Lower Manhattan.

Kodansha House: Where Manga Meets will officially open on October 4 and welcome guests on Wednesdays to Sundays between noon and 9pm through the end of October.

There will be lots to do at the pop-up, with activities and programming spanning in form and topic. You’ll get to look through a robust manga library, for example, and meet fellow fans. Other activations include live discussions and trivia nights about your favorite anime, movie screenings (Akira, Blue Lock, Ghost in the Shell and Blame! are already on the schedule) and dress-up scenarios where you will get to suit up like popular characters before posing against a projected anime background. You’ll basically feel like an anime star in no time.

A mere look through the various scheduled activities makes one thing clear: the organizers really want fans to get together and are hoping that the experience will be about much more than grabbing merch showcasing anime stars. As a matter of fact, the already-announced “speed friending event for fans to find their perfect manga-loving match” sounds absolutely delightful

Considering that Kodansha is behind hits like Sailor Moon, we can only imagine how popular the temporary destination will be this fall so heed our advice and try to get there towards the beginning of the month, before word spreads about the fun to be had in there.

Is Access To NYC Park Restrooms In The Toilet?

When nature calls, a quick pitstop to NYC park restrooms could divert any potential problems. However, the accessibility of these facilities isn’t what it should be, according to a new investigation.

While many of us have come to rely on the ultra-convenient map of NYC open bathrooms — which includes coffee shops, fast food chains, and public spaces, to name a few options — those restrooms at our favorite NYC parks are either unsanitary or unopened during operating hours, per the newly released findings.

The New York City Council’s Oversight and Investigative Division just unveiled Nature’s Call: An Assessment of NYC Park Restrooms and found that nearly 70% of the spaces were a no go. The report states:

“OID’s investigation revealed significant issues requiring urgent attention, including that fully two-thirds (66.6%) of all restrooms — 68 of 102 we inspected or attempted to inspect — were closed or had health and safety issues.”

The Council members gathered data in July. Here’s how they went about it: they visited one men’s and one women’s bathroom in each of the city’s 51 Council Districts on July 9th, 10th, and 11th between 8am and 4pm.

Although reports suggest that the Parks Department doesn’t find the assessment accurate, considering there are nearly 700 restrooms in question, the City Council is still vigilant about providing accommodating facilities for New Yorkers.

The organization continues to push for agencies to add the promised 151 new public restrooms across the five boroughs, a move that was signed off two years ago.

Should you feel as though your local park restrooms need improvement while you’re out an about enjoying September activities in NYC — and beyond — you can call 311, contact Mayor Eric Adams, or provide feedback on the issue at NYC.gov.

You can read Nature’s Call: An Assessment Of NYC Park Restrooms in full for more information.

Believe It! Units Below $1K Are Available In This Harlem Affordable Housing Lottery

Us New Yorkers will be expressing our hatred towards rent prices until the end of time–and when we’re paying 164% more than the average American and less than 5% of NYC rents are affordable for those making the city’s average salary can you blame us?!

So when we hear about affordable housing opportunities being offered by the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and Housing Development Corporation (HDC), we flock to them the same way we would to a baconeggncheese. Why? Because it’s our chance to snag a beautiful apartment for a fraction of the cost, and if the one that recently opened in Hudson Yards wasn’t enough, there’s now another one in Harlem with units starting below $1K!

Exterior of Harlem Affordable Housing Lottery
Source / NYC Housing Connect

And no, this isn’t a drill! Known as the Marcus Garvey Apartments the latest housing gem is a brand new 117-unit, affordable residential project located in the heart of Harlem. New Yorkers with an income between $29,555 and $117,390–between 40 and 70% of the area’s median income–are eligible.

Designed for comfort and convenience, each unit features state-of-the-art amenities, spacious layouts, and premium finishes. Amenities include, but aren’t limited to, the following:

  • Bike storage lockers
  • Shared laundry room
  • Dishwasher in unit
  • High-end kitchen appliances
  • Air conditioning
  • Outdoor terrace
  • Security cameras
  • Elevator

Of the 117 available units 30 are studios starting at $788, 43 are one bedrooms starting at $993, and 44 are two bedrooms starting at $1,184. And considering apartments.com notes that the average monthly rent for a studio in NYC is $3,133, you can see why this lottery has grabbed our attention!

20% of the building’s units are preferred to go to Manhattan Community Board 10 residents, 5% are preferred for New York employees, 2% is for vision/hearing, and 5% for mobility. The lottery doesn’t require deposits or application fees and, in addition to rent, selected tenants will only have to worry about paying their electric bill.

Interested residents have until September 30, 2024 to apply.

Check out new renderings of the proposed Hudson Yards casino

Check out new renderings of the proposed Hudson Yards casino

Back in February, we told you all about the Las Vegas-style casino that could open inside a new Hudson Yards skyscraper. Today, we’ve got a bunch of pretty awesome-looking new renderings of the possible project to show you.

Related Companies and Wynn Resorts released new images of their $12 billion proposal, specifically looking at how Hudson Yards West, as the building would be dubbed, could impact its surroundings. In fact, High Line enthusiasts previously launched a campaign against the project, citing concerns about how the development would affect the view from the elevated park.

If the renderings are to be believed, the High Line will keep looking as beautiful as ever, offering passerby great views—including that of a casino, a 5.6-acre public park, a public school, office spaces, a hotel resort operated by Wynn and more.

A word about the public park, officially called Hudson Green: the would-be space is about as big as Bryant Park and would be home to playscapes, gardens, open lawns and more of the sorts of features that area residents associate with public green spaces. Think of it as the Central Park of Hudson Yards.

Needless to say, we’re still a long time from this whole proposal maybe becoming a reality as the city still needs to review all pertaining data and information.
