A beloved Canadian doughnut shop is opening in NYC this week—with free treats
New York City may be a bagel town, but another circular breakfast treat begs to be eaten this week. COPS, a beloved Canadian doughnut company with three shops in Toronto, is making its debut in the West Village on Friday, September 13, with a free doughnut giveaway on Thursday, September 12.
With its high-quality, handmade doughnuts and artful designs, this shop is unlike any other in the city right now. Like its counterparts across the border, expect unique weekly offerings drawing on classic and inventive flavors. Opening week will feature two of COPS’ best-sellers, the cinnamon sugar and the OG sour cream glaze.

The NYC location at 10 Morton Street will start out with the classics, but expect the flavors to get wilder from there. Recent flavors in Canada have included pandan glaze with toasted coconut; turon glaze with jackfruit jam and banana and jackfruit crumble; and sesame chili glaze with bubu arare, just to name a few.
Each batch is made fresh to order, and the speciality glazes are made from scratch perfected through collaboration with a food scientist and fine dining chef. In addition to doughnuts, you’ll be able to order filter coffee in partnership with local coffee roasters.
The doughnuts are so good that when I tried them in Toronto a few months ago, I found myself Googling the store to find out if I could get these heavenly morsels in the U.S. Each bite into these warm, practically velvety circles will have you going back for more. Lucky for all of us, COPS is finally crossing the border. COPS first opened in Toronto in 2018 with a philosophy of creating “art worth eating.” The name is a cheeky reference to the long-standing association between cops and doughnuts; their quirky slogan is “EAT COPS.”
“COPS promises to bring its signature blend of gritty luxury to the Big Apple,” the COPS team says. “We’re reimagining the local doughnut shop as a global creative studio.”
In line with that vision of merging art, fashion, food, and lifestyle, COPS will collaborate with Morton Street Partners for the opening. Morton Street Partners is a cutting-edge curatorial project that blends contemporary art with collectible cars.
Now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for: Here’s how to score free doughnuts. The launch event on Thursday, September 12, will run from 5-10pm in partnership with culinary collective See You Soon at Morton Street Partners, next door to COPS.
Regular business will begin on Friday, September 13, from 12-10pm. The store will take over Doughnut Project’s former West Village location.
This year’s theme for the NYC Halloween Parade is for the cat ladies
New York City’s 51st annual Village Halloween Parade—one of the most anticipated events of the year by locals and tourists alike—will officially take place on October 31 focusing on the theme “Meow,” a subtle call out to a comment made by Republican Vice Presidential nominee J.D. Vance during a 2021 interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
During the segment, Vance spoke about “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.”
Perfectly timed to tonight’s much anticipated first (and, perhaps, only) Presidential debate between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, the choice of new theme is apparently “not political,” said Jeanne Fleming, a director of the parade for 44 years, to NBC 4.
Fleming revealed that the original theme was supposed to be “no sense, nonsense, nonsensical” but, when the old interview resurfaced, the organizers decided to pivot.
“Fleming reiterated to News 4 that the subject is not meant as a direct attack on any political party but rather a sign of the times,” reports the outlet. “The black cat is a more traditional tie to witches during the spooky season.”
Whether directly partisan or tongue-in-cheek, the organizers are clearly all-in on the motif: this year, the parade will feature a special Cat Ladies Unite section. Plus: participants may opt to purchase a Cat Ladies ticket, although it is unclear what that will include just yet.
Sure, we’re still over a month away from the iconic Halloween event, but we just started tingling all over at the mere thought of marching up Sixth Avenue… perhaps dressed up as a fancy cat?

Silvia Barban is bringing a retro Italian restaurant to Crown Heights
Since 2016, chef Silvia Barban has kept us full and happy with handmade pasta (especially her smoked spaghetti) and plenty of natural wines at her Clinton Hill restaurant, LaRina Pastificio & Vino. For her next act, Barban and her business partners, Andrea Mancin, Federico Cesi and Luca Pelliccioni, are introducing an authentic Italian trattoria, done the right way.
RECOMMENDED: The 26 best Italian restaurants in NYC
Barban’s latest, Briscola (798a Franklin Avenue), opens on September 13. Named after one of Italy’s popular card games (and also slang for a hangover), Briscola aims to give a true trattoria experience, something that Barban sees as lost in the New York scene.
“Many restaurants today call themselves ‘trattoria,’ but few honor the roots of what a trattoria truly is,” Barban said in a press release. “In Italy, a trattoria was a no-frills stop for highway travelers—a place to indulge in hearty, comforting meals prepared with love.”
Paying respects to those traditional dishes, Briscola will feature the show-stopping Bomba di Riso, a rounded dome of rice filled with Agerola mozzarella and green peas, with hand-rolled meatballs spooned on top. Classics continue on with the Doppio Raviolo Spinach and Ricotta, Pollo e Peperoni and Zucchine Ripiene. At the end of the meal, a sweet cart will weave its way through the dining room. Known as the Carrello dei Dolci, the cart will soon offer an array of Italian desserts from Profiteroles to Zuccotto, a classic Italian cake made with ice cream at its center.
Soon, the restaurant plans to introduce Briscola Nights, which will only be offered for the last seating of the evening. Here, guests can stay after service and learn how to play the Italian card game with restaurant staff. In this way, Barban hopes to build community over food and tradition.
“Briscola is more than just a restaurant; it’s an invitation to experience authentic Italian culture—the food, the hospitality, and even the joy of a good card game,” said Barban. “We want our guests to feel like they’ve stepped into a cozy, old-school Italian trattoria where they’re part of the family.”
Briscola is located at 798A Franklin Avenue and will open on September 13th. Reservations will be available through Resy.
