This NYC pizzeria was yet again named the very best in the world

This NYC pizzeria was yet again named the very best in the world

Once again, for the second time, Una Pizza Napoletana, the Lower East Side spot by Anthony Mangieri, was crowned the best pizzeria in the world by 50 Top Pizza, an online guide that focuses on the top pizza parlors across the world and releases an annual ranking annually.

The destination at 175 Orchard Street first earned the title in 2022, when it actually shared it with I Masanielli from Caserta, Italy. The next year, in 2023, the parlor landed in the number two spots—but it has found its way back up again in 2024.

Mangieri clearly knows what he is doing: he opened Una Pizza Napoletana in New Jersey in 1996 and relocated the business to Manhattan in 2004, a move that led to many restaurant reviews and a rise in popularity.

Interestingly enough, according to the pizzeria’s official website, Mangieri then decided to relocate once more, this time to San Francisco in 2010, “where the third iteration of Una Pizza Napoletana continued to enthrall critics and pizza lovers alike.”

In 2018, Una Pizza Napoletana debuted on the Lower East Side once more and, since March 2022, the location is the only iteration of Mangieri’s project across all of America.

But back to 50 Top Pizza. In addition to Una Pizza Napoletana, three other NYC spots appear on the list: Ribalta, Don Antonio and L’Industrie Pizzeria. We can’t say we disagree with any of those entries.

12 new NYC restaurants have been added to the Michelin Guide

12 new NYC restaurants have been added to the Michelin Guide

Over 400 New York restaurants have been featured on the Michelin Guide, from high-end tasting menus to mom-and-pop shops with tenured histories. This week, 12 more restaurants were added to the list, ranging from Scandinavian-caught seafood to Filipino eats fit for a royal.

With additions being added periodically through out the year, adding 10 restaurants in April and eight more in May, the Michelin Guide now features the likes of French eatery, Le B, from the mind of Angie Mar; a tasting menu from the Blanca, hidden inside Roberta’s; and a booked and busy neighborhood favorite, Sailor, from the one and only April Bloomfield.

Not to be confused with Michelin stars, the Michelin Guide is a series of guidebooks that have been published by the company for 125 years. While all 400-plus restaurants could be up for consideration, the announcement of stars will be released in the fall. But for now, here are 12 more restaurants to add to your must-visit list.

1. Blanca

Revived from its closure during the pandemic, you’ll find this Michelin-starred venue walking through the original Roberta’s. Chef Victoria Blamey’s tasting menu dives through, “Oyster with kalamansi cream, Dungeness crab empanadas, and surf clams with nixtamalized sweet potato reflect wide-ranging inspiration.”

2. Eulalie

Everything is a bit old school at Eulalie. To get a taste of chef Chip Vaughn’s four-course, French-inspired menu, reservations must be made by phone.

3. ILIS

Opened by the co-founder of Noma, Mads Refslynd, ILIS has an “eco-chic” vibe calibrated to match a sustainable cuisine that reflects his Nordic pedigree.”

4. La Bastide by Andrea Calstier

Husband-and-wife duo, chef Andrea Calstier and general manager Elena Oliver, invite guests to enjoy a multi-course, French tasting menu in Westchester.

5. Le B

Receiving a four-star status from Forbes, Angie Mar’s latest “presents a celebration of haute French cuisine married with her Chinese heritage.” Her 45-day aged burger from the shuttered The Beatrice Inn also makes an appearance here.

6. Massara

Chef Stefano Secchi of Rezdôra masterfully peruses Southern Italian cuisine with tender pulpo and ravioli plump with burrata imported from Campania.

7. Penny

8. Sailor

April Bloomfield’s neighborhood bistro is truly a winner, its roasted chicken spawning think pieces from far and wide. We clearly agree, giving it four stars in 2023.

9. Sushi Sho

Found near the New York Public Library, this eight-seat sushi counter by chef Keiji Nakazawa stuns with omakase offerings.

10. Tadhanà

Chef Frances Tariga’s resume includes appearances on TV to serving as the private chef to the royal family of the United Arab Emirates. At Tadhanà, she follows her own journey, showing off the regional specialties of her home country of the Philippines.

NYC Has The 5th Biggest Inflation Problem In The U.S.

I think we can all agree that no one likes inflation. And after the U.S. inflation rate reached a 40-year high following the pandemic, we’re fortunate it’s at least gone down a little since. And though our nation’s inflation rate has improved, New Yorkers should know that they’re dealing with the fifth largest inflation problem in the country, according to a new study from WalletHub

As of August 2024, the United States’ inflation rate is 4.2%, 0.2% above the target 2%. At this standard 2%, economies are supposed to be able to achieve price stability for prosperous growth. Labor shortages and the war in Ukraine are just some factors WalletHub believes the U.S. has surpassed this target rate.

But inflation doesn’t just differ by country, but by state and city as well. So to gain further insight, WalletHub analyzed 23 major Metropolitan Statistical Areas against two metrics regarding Consumer Price Index:

  • Consumer Price Index Change (Latest month vs 2 months before)
  • Consumer Price Index Change (Latest month vs 1 year ago)

Each metric was assigned a weight to land on a total score that demonstrates how inflation has changed, both short and long term, for each area.

Minneapolis-St.Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI leads the list for having the worst inflation problem in the country, with a score of 83.33. Other high inflation cities include Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI (77.81) in second place, followed by Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI (70.18) and Urban Honolulu, HI (65.79) in third and fourth. New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA was declared the fifth worst area for inflation problems with a total score of 65.61.

So what makes inflation so different across cities? “Nationwide impacts like supply chain issues and interest rate expectations are still present, but housing prices seem to be a significant driver of price differentials among cities,” explains Malcom Kass, Assistant Professor at the University of Dallas. “Just looking at the year-over-year numbers, it is hard to determine much, except that NYC and some other cities are probably still not allowing enough housing to be built.” However, New York does have plans to build 33,000 new apartments.

WalletHub’s full study details a more in depth look at which areas are facing the biggest inflation problems.

We’re Calling It: The Brooklyn Museum Rebrand Will Usher In New Style Trends

Brooklyn Museum is ringing its bicentennial with a new look, and we have a feeling it’ll be all over New Yorkers’ radars.

Adam O’Reilly and the attraction’s graphic design team worked with Other Means to create new signage, digital campaigns, a revamped website, and exclusive merch.

“The ways that audiences are engaging with museums are expanding, and we needed a new brand that meets the demands of the day, honors our rich history, and brings a whole lot of energy,” says Anne Pasternak, Shelby White and Leon Levy, Director of the Brooklyn Museum. “And there’s no better time to launch it than our 200th anniversary!”

A look inside the Brooklyn Museum rebrand

These aesthetics pay respect to years past while looking ahead: the modern san serif typeface is meant to symbolize the New York museum’s multidimensionality.

Additionally, the two dots — and the two “Os” in Brooklyn — mimic the building’s facade where two circles frame the names of ancient philosophers, playwrights, and poets. They’re meant to celebrate the fusion between nature and the arts.

If you ask us, the symbolism and looks are the perfect recipe for New Yorkers’ next new trend: we expect that the quintessential Architectural Digest and Trader Joe’s totes that are all over the city might be replaced with the Parkway Tote ($28).

And since we’re always reaching for water, whether out and about in NYC parks or fastened to our laptop screens at a WeWork space, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Brooklyn Museum water bottles ($28) in the mix with Stanley Cups and coffee takeout orders.

Per the Museum’s press release, “there will be a new palette [that] includes a range of grays, paying homage to our limestone building, as well as brighter, more saturated hues, lending a distinctly Brooklyn vibe.”

Sounds like a must to us! Cheers to the Brooklyn hotspot and its makeover.

Has Paw Patrol Jinxed Aaron Judge And The Yankees Season?

The New York Yankees are struggling once again as playoff time approaches. Since the beginning of August, the team’s record is 18-18, among the league’s worst. They have lost key games that come playoff time could be crucial to having home-field advantage.

On top of the Yankees’ struggles is Aaron Judge, the team’s captain and one of the American League MVP favorites. Until August, his season was one of the best of all time, and he was on pace to break the home run record he set in 2022, but he has been in a slump that is close to his worst ever.

Is Aaron Judge Slumping at the Worst Possible Time?

After a strong start to the season, Judge has now gone 13 games without a home run, drawing comparisons to his late-season struggles in previous years. The timing of this decline is troubling for the Yankees, who rely heavily on Judge’s performance to secure their postseason spot.

Can Aaron Judge Bounce Back Before the Playoffs?

The Yankees have options to alleviate some of the pressure on Judge. With the recent arrival of Jasson Dominguez, the team could give Judge more time as a designated hitter.

This could help him regain his strength and focus just in time for the critical postseason games. The team needs Judge to return to form if they hope to make a deep playoff run.

Is Aaron Judge Still the MVP Favorite?

Despite his struggles, Aaron Judge remains a strong contender for the American League MVP award, with 51 home runs this season.

However, the competition is heating up, particularly from Kansas City Royals’ Bobby Witt Jr. He is leading the majors in batting average and has 30 home runs, making the AL MVP race tighter than ever.

What is the Paw Patrol Jinx?

On August 26, Aaron Judge made headlines when he starred in an episode of the popular children’s TV show Paw Patrol.

In the episode, the Yankees captain and proud dog dad helped the pups build a ballpark and ended up hitting a home run. Funnily enough, that is the last home run he has hit since the episode aired.

Aaron Judge’s late-season slump is causing concern for both his MVP chances and the Yankees’ playoff hopes. With just weeks before the postseason, Judge should overcome his struggles to help lead the Yankees to success. Fans and analysts alike are eagerly watching to see if the Yankees captain can regain his throne before it’s too late.

Every year, New Yorkers can look forward to plenty of parades celebrating different minority groups, from Pride to Chinatown’s Lunar New Year festivities and the West Indian Day Parade. But one such event that doesn’t always get the love and attention it deserves is the African American Day Parade, which takes place in September every year.

The African American Day Parade will take place this Sunday, September 15 and will begin at 12:30pm.

Which New York neighborhood has the largest African American Day Parade procession?

Harlem has the largest African American Day Parade procession. The parade will run along Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard between 111th Street and 137th Street, according to ABC 7

You can expect a festive atmosphere along the route, complete with marching bands, DJ sets, ensembles and hundreds of thousands of spectators all throughout the route.

Let me tell you—how to have a Meg Ryan fall in New York City

Let me tell you—how to have a Meg Ryan fall in New York City

“Let Me Tell You” is a series of columns from our expert editors about NYC living, including the best things to do, where to eat and drink, and what to see at the theater. They publish each Wednesday so you’re hearing from us each week. Last month, Senior News Editor Anna Rahmanan wrote about jet skiing in NYC and why you should do it.

What is a Meg Ryan fall, you may ask? In today’s lingo, it’s a vibe

A reference to the characters that Ryan played in a series of still-beloved ’90s rom-coms—You’ve Got Mail! Sleepless in Seattle! When a Man Loves a Woman! When Harry Met Sally… (technically, a 1989 production)—the aesthetic is about more than cozy sweaters and knit skirts, which defined Ryan’s wardrobe in basically all of those movies.

A Meg Ryan fall is that feeling you get as summer draws to a close, school starts up again and the possibility of all things new suddenly becomes concrete.

“Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address. On the other hand, this not knowing has its charms.” – Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) in You’ve Got Mail

Although summer in New York is exciting for its myriad of offerings, from outdoor shows to patio dinners and water-related activities, there is just something about autumn that forces you to lean into comfort and ease—a tenderness exuded by Ryan in her ’90s roles.

During a Meg Ryan fall, you’re advised to revel in a warm cup of coffee with a book in hand, perhaps taking long strolls through Central Park and musing on the exciting possibilities that a new academic year may bring along with it, from novel romantic interests to professional opportunities and more.

Although not all rom-coms starring Ryan are set in New York, many are and, as luck would have it, our very own town is perfectly suited to offer those interested the chance to fully embrace their own version of a Meg Ryan fall.

Take the city’s vast array of bookstores, a setting used across many Ryan rom-coms (Ryan plays a bookstore owner/employee in both You’ve Got Mail and Joe Versus the Volcano).

Sleepless In Seattle
Photograph: courtesy TriStar Pictures

Not many cities across America lay claim to the number of literary destinations that New York counts as its own, so if you’re going to embrace your Meg Ryan fall, we can’t think of a better place to start than the Strand, perhaps, or the always charming Bonnie Slotnick Cookbooks, dedicated to all culinary tomes. We do suspect that the 2024 version of rom-com Ryan might be found somewhere in Brooklyn, though, probably at Community Bookstore in Park Slope, where she would start taking care of the store turtle as her own.

Here’s an idea: start your own book club, the very epitome of Meg Ryan-ness in the world of fiction.

Literary endeavors aside, the particular seasonal vibe also hinges on all things caffeine.

Let’s be clear: if Ryan’s character in You’ve Got Mail, Kathleen Kelly, is of any indication, New Yorkers committed to her lifestyle should only try to buy coffee from independent purveyors, also avoiding creative concoctions that have recently drenched the American coffee market (we’re looking at you, frappuccinos). That is to say: a flat white at Laughing Man Cafe is probably acceptable, but Blank Street Coffee, Dunkin’ and Starbucks (blasphemy!) absolutely aren’t.

There are plenty of options all over town: Mud, a staple on the New York University campus, and Abraço are worthy of regular visits, as is Devoción in Williamsburg, which is actually an outpost of a coffee roaster in Bogota, Colombia.

Needless to say, reading the book you just purchased at Three Lives & Company while sipping on a cappuccino at any of these local cafes is very much part of a Meg Ryan fall.

There’s also tons of walking, which Ryan does throughout her ’90s films. Her walking scenes are mostly soundtracked by whimsical tunes and classic songs (Joni Mitchell, Harry Nilsson, Jimmy Durante) that usually portend a major development in the plot. During those walks, Ryan often realizes that, perhaps, she is in love with Tom Hanks’ character in You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle or that she should take a chance and embrace the adventure offered by Joe in Joe Versus the Volcano (that would be Hanks again).

New York does provide the perfect walking paths for that kind of self-reflection. From Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge and mere strolls through downtown Manhattan or Dumbo, there are plenty of areas that just feel ripe for self-analysis, a practice that, let’s be honest, busy New Yorkers don’t love to embrace.

And then there are the clothes—because if you dress the part, then you are the part.

The autumnal aesthetic isn’t that hard to recreate: earthy tones (maroons and browns in particular) take center stage in the form of chunky cable-knit sweaters, cozy turtlenecks, wide-legged pants, pencil skirts and oversized coats. The key to it all: you’ve got to mix materials and styles and try to pair them with chunky loafers, Oxfords, panama hats and, perhaps, leather gloves.

Although plenty of vintage stores in New York may be home to what you need, we suggest going for the basic and the commercial when it comes to this particular sense of fashion: Banana Republic, Everlane and Old Navy are great places to start.

The dissection of the local version of a Meg Ryan fall suddenly makes one thing clear to us once more: in New York, you can be whoever you want to be—and if that happens to be Meg Ryan falling in love with Tom Hanks in the middle of a Manhattan street, so be it.

A new food hall is opening on Fifth Avenue

A new food hall is opening on Fifth Avenue

Apparently, the food hall trend in New York is still going strong: Shaver Hall is a new 35,000-square-foot culinary destination set to open on the ground floor of the iconic Lord & Taylor flagship Hank building at 424-434 Fifth Avenue by 38th Street, now owned by and home to Amazon’s corporate offices.

According to Eater, Amazon is behind the project alongside a Texas-based food hall company.

The outlet reports that the new destination will boast two full-fledged restaurants, a couple of bars and a total of 11 stalls, including one operated by F&F Pizzeria, the popular Carroll Gardens spot.

6sqft also reports that Korean-inspired chicken eatery Chick Chick and Mexican street food outpost Taqueria Al Pastor will be taking over stalls.

As exciting as the gastronomic offerings will be, the historical significance of the venue will undoubtedly contribute to the allure of the new food hall.

The former Lord & Taylor flagship, in fact, stood tall at the address for over a century. It closed in 2019 and was purchased and renovated by Amazon a few years later. The food hall pays homage to that trajectory: Shaver Hall is named after Dorothy Shaver, the president of Lord & Taylor and a very big player in the department store game.

Although we’re a bit disenchanted with the whole food hall thing—there’s something to be said about going to a traditional restaurant to enjoy a meal outside of our apartments—we must admit that we have complete faith in Amazon, so we’re expecting Shaver Hall to really up the ante when it comes to the gastronomic form.
