MTA Unveils $68B Capital Plan To Improve Mass Transit For 2025-2029

The MTA unveiled the newest capital plan on Wednesday, a proposal with goals to help modernize mass transit over the course of the next several years. Totaling just north of over $68 billion dollars, the proposed solution is not to necessarily prioritize new rail lines, but instead upkeep existing transportation and maintaining the somewhat “status quo.”

“There are assets within this system that are in real danger of failure,” Jamie Torres-Springer, the MTA’s president of construction and development, said at a press briefing Tuesday.

In terms of the proposed plan, there are several key improvements they have their eyes set on, see them below:

  • Purchasing 2,000 new modern railcars
  • Modernizing and replacing 75+ miles of signals (Broadway N, Q, R, W line, the Liberty and Rockaway A, S lines, and the Nassau J, Z lines)
  • Upgrading transit hub maintenance facilities, including Livonia Shop and the 240 St Shop
  • 60+ stations to be made ADA-accessible and 45 subway station elevators to be replaced
  • 150+ stations upgraded with customer communications and enhanced security cameras
  • 10 stations will be fully renovated
  • Platform fencing will be installed at 100 stations
  • Building the The Interborough Express (IBX), a new rapid transit service between Brooklyn and Queens
  • Purchasing 500 zero-emissions buses as part of mission to achieve a zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040
  • Renewing power systems
  • Installing modern fare gates
  • Rebuilding the Grand Central Artery, which carries 98% of all MetroNorth service
  • Combat flooding in the subway for 20+ stations
  • Upgrading Hudson Line infrastructure to combat climate change, sea-level rise and intense rainstorms
Source / MTA

“After years of underinvestment, more than 90 percent of this proposed plan – the largest in MTA history – focuses on bringing the system to a state of good repair. These investments are necessary to serve the following generations and the future of the region’s economy, environment and social and economic equity,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber.

In terms of next steps, the MTA Board is scheduled to vote on the capital plan during its meeting on September 25. If approved, the plan must be submitted to the MTA Capital Program Review Board by October 1, which will have 30 days to review and approve it.

From there, the MTA plans to launch a series of open houses in mid-October throughout the New York region along with a public education campaign to engage and inform New Yorkers about the capital plan.

Stay tuned for more info on the MTA capital plan, and if you wish to read the whole thing you can see the full report here.

Candlelight Meets Bridgerton In NYC: Join The Waitlist For The Soirée Of The Season

Dearest Reader,

Every viewer remembers them well — the lavish balls attended by members of the ton and the talented string quartets reworking modern-day hits in the classical form. Since 2020, the famous period drama has been gripping audiences worldwide with its steamy scenes and nuanced take on Regency-era etiquette. And Candlelight x Bridgerton in New York invites everyone to experience hearing familiar tracks performed on strings for the ultimate throwback to Mayfair’s sophisticated soirées. Quite a rare jewel is coming to St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church, indeed!

I suggest you sign up for the waitlist for exclusive pre-sale access to tickets, up to 24 hours before they go on sale on September 26. After all, you won’t want to miss out on the chance to allow the likes of Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything” and Sia’s “Cheap Thrills” to get under your skin again and remind you of that highly anticipated carriage scene.

Candlelight: Best of Bridgerton on Strings – Waitlist

A string quartet performing a Candlelight concert in a sea of candles and flowers.

The Best of Bridgerton on Strings

No one could be more reliable than I to reveal the circumstances of this Bridgerton-inspired performance.

As thousands of flickering candles illuminate a unique space, an ensemble takes to the stage to transform electropop, R&B, and other music genres with a classical twist. Featuring highlights from Bridgerton’s classical-pop soundtrack, the setlist for this sensational spectacle is full of the same rich and thrilling notes that played on as debutantes, dukes, and duchesses were up to no good.

Ariana Grande’s “thank u, next” stirs up memories of the very first episode. Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” is a true testament to Simon Basset’s coldness. And the dramatic effect of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” perfectly encapsulates the emotional roller coaster Anthony and Kate’s relationship endures. Expect these songs and more to take you on a musical journey unlike any other. You can even close your eyes and picture yourself as part of one of the noble families, wearing a dance card around your wrist, hosting calling hours, or initiating horse chases in the park.

Members of the Bridgerton family.

This Candlelight meets Bridgerton concert is so very captivating and bright that I believe even Her Majesty herself couldn’t demand more. A blend of countless emotions, candles, and classical renditions will take you back to the 1800s within the confines of St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church.

I never was nor ever will be a fan of keeping secrets; spread the word far and wide: Candlelight x Bridgerton is ready to shine another new light on contemporary music

Yours truly,

Lady Whistledown

See renderings of the new electric train that will eventually connect Brooklyn and Queens

See renderings of the new electric train that will eventually connect Brooklyn and Queens

The city’s public transportation scene may soon completely change as the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) announced that it will allocate over $2 billion to pay for the first phases of the construction of the Interborough Express, a 14-mile light rail that will connect Queens and Brooklyn in 40 minutes.

IBX, as the project is being referred to, was first proposed by Governor Kathy Hochul back in 2022, when commuting pattern data showed that less and less New Yorkers were commuting into and out of Manhattan.

“We need to reconnect neighborhoods that were severed by asphalt highways, disproportionately impacting communities of color,” she said during her State of the State Address then. “Stronger rapid transit in Brooklyn and Queens is long overdue. Both boroughs have exploded with residents in recent years, and these communities rely heavily on public transportation.”

As of now, the line would run along an existing freight rote from Jackson Heights to Bay Ridge. According to Gothamist, it would service 19 stations and connect to 17 different subway lines, effectively revolutionizing commuting traffic patters and expanding access to the outer boroughs.

As exciting as the project sounds, it’s still a long way from reality: the MTA’s just-announced financial allocation would only cover about half of the project’s $5.5 billion cost.

What’s more, officials don’t expect to have all the capital in place until after 2030. Given the enormity of the project and how much it will affect average New Yorkers’ day-to-day lives, we are confident it will all be worth the wait.

The NYC Ferry is now offering travel guides that will change the way you see the city

The NYC Ferry is now offering travel guides that will change the way you see the city

In many instances, taking the NYC ferry is the fastest way to get around the city, especially if you want to reach places along the waterfront that don’t have fast and easy access to a train line.

But unless you’re an architecture and history buff, chances are you’re passing lots of buildings and neighborhood with landmarks you don’t know that much about. Luckily, the NYC Ferry says it wants to make sure you get the most fun and knowledge out of your next ride: The nautical New York institution just released travel guides with information on some of the most iconic spots you’ll pass along your commute.

RECOMMENDED: Here’s when the Bryant Park Winter Village is coming back in 2024

NYC Ferry’s travel guide page, you’ll be able to scroll through pages dedicated to each route, where you’ll see a picture of each landmark accompanied by a paragraph on information and history about that landmark. Below each explanation, you’ll also be able to see how far of a walking distance each each landmark is from its corresponding ferry stop. You can choose the route that you’re going to take and download your desired map as a PDF. Each has numbers that mark where landmarks are.

Some of the highlights on the travel guides include the Federal Hall National Memorial, where George Washington was inaugurated as president; the SeaGlass Carousel, a whimsical art exhibit; and Castle Williams on Governors Island, a former fort meant to defend New York City.

Not only is taking the ferry a cool and more unique way of sightseeing, it’s hella cheap. Riding the NYC ferry costs as much as riding the subway, or $2.90 per ride, compared to $30 or more on a formal guided boat tour.

Before this, if you wanted to do a self-guided tour on the ferry, you’d have to figure out the right stops and distance to different attractions from the ferry dock on your own.
