NYC Steakhouse Legend Wolfgang Zwiener Dies at 85

Restauranteur Wolfgang Zwiener, the brains behind the wildly popular Wolfgang Steakhouse, has passed away at 85 on January 23rd, 2025 at his home in Honolulu.

Though his global steakhouse chain is a legend in its own right, Zwiener got his start at the iconic Peter Luger, one of the most legendary restaurants in the world. He remained there for 39 years.

Naysayers worried he wouldn’t have the chops to transition into such a powerful new role, but upon the restaurant’s 2004 opening, his business has only grown. There are dozens of Wolfgang’s Steakhouse locations across the U.S. and even across Asia. According to The New York Times, roughly 15 more global locations are slated for an opening.

This type of work clearly ran in Zwiener’s family. His parents ran a restaurant in Silesia, Germany, and he followed suit by enrolling in a hospitality program in Bremen, Germany. Later in life, he was a waiter on a cruise ship in the North German Lloyd line. After made his way to the U.S. in 1960, he took waiting positions at Sunnyside Brauhall, the Hilton Hotel, and Lüchow’s before landing as head waiter at Peter Luger’s. Though he has become a name synonymous with steakhouses and elegant dining, particularly in NYC, interviews indicate that he discouraged his children from pursuing a culinary career. But he certainly made an impact with his own.

“He had a debonair and overwhelming presence,” Mark Solasz, the vice president of Master Purveyors, the company that supplies Wolfgang’s meats, told The New York Times. “He reminded me of an actor from the movies, but he was real life.”

Nearly 26-Foot Tall Bronze Sculptures Take Over Tribeca’s Hottest New Art Gallery

On January 10th, 2025, Jack Shainman Gallery officially opened the doors to its expansive new flagship Tribeca location. And to kick things off, a massive exhibition by Chicago-based artist Nick Cave, titled Amalgams and Graphts, has brought monumental bronze sculptures, or “Amalgams,” and a series of mixed-media self-portraits, or “Graphts,” to the shiny, new space.

“Two distinct series push [Cave’s] singular style and vision to an epic realm, while maintaining an intimate and personal conversation with his audience,” says the Gallery of the exhibition. Three large bronze sculptures make up the Amalgams portion of the exhibition, and are an evolution of Cave’s iconic Soundsuits, which were created in response to the Rodney King beating in 1991 and, concealing race, gender, and class, forced viewers to engage without preconceived judgment.

The Amalgams are fused casts from Cave’s own body ornamented with intricate and ornate designs, such as natural forms including as flowers, birds, and trees, gesturing to nature’s sense of evolution and possibility. The nearly 26-foot-tall Amalgam (Origin) at the center of the gallery features a tree sprouting out from the top, while the Amalgam (Plot) depicts two bronze figures lying side by side “recalling a still from video footage portraying the ongoing racially motivated violence cast onto Black bodies.”

“Together, the Amalgams are embodiments of growth and resistance in the face of oppressive structures,” writes the Gallery.

Debuting alongside the Amalgams is Cave’s newest series, Graphts. These needlepoint portraits of the artist, the first time Cave has revealed a recognizable self portrait, are set amongst fields of florals and color constructed from vintage serving trays. The needlepoint is associated with upper class gentility, while the patchwork of serving trays evoke quilting traditions prevalent in the Black community, making for an interplay of double meanings.

Jack Shainman Gallery’s website writes:

Together, the Amalgams and Graphts investigate how we portray race, class and power, as well as how these larger institutional systems shape our identities. They are both deeply personal and universal, allowing viewers many entry points into a reflective experience.

Beyond the gallery, Cave’s work is on permanent view at the 42nd Street Times Square subway station.

Jack Shainman Gallery’s new Tribeca location is located in the multi-story historic Clock Tower Building–originally completed around 1898–at 46 Lafayette Street. Occupying 20,000 square feet, with 29-foot-high ceilings, sweeping staircases, and a wall of massive arched windows, the grandeur space makes it perfect for large-scale exhibitions.

Shakespeare In The Park Will Return To The Revitalized Delacorte Theater This Summer

Though the final casting for Shakespeare in the Park’s Twelfth Night has yet to be announced, it has been confirmed by Central Park that the 2025 performances will return to the Delacorte Theater this summer.

The 2024 season was a little nontraditional after Shakespeare in the Park had to find new venues while the Delacorte Theater underwent a historic revitalization. Of course, the show must go on, so the free programming adapted with pop-up performances across the five boroughs. However, the Delacorte Theater will officially reopen this summer, just in time for the 2025 season.

Delacorte Theater was first built in 1962. Over the years, the famous theater has hosted more than five million people from around the world.

Ahead of the 2025 season, Public Theater promised the reopening to be “more welcoming, more accessible, and more sustainable than ever before.” Moreover, the redesign will address outstanding safety needs, infrastructure and backstage efficiency and so on.

As of December 2024, six new lighting towers were installed around the grandstand. The installment was no easy feat, requiring a special crew and crane to lift each tower. The new towers will aid the production team in conducting safer and more efficient work as they climb them.

Key upgrades include:

  • Audience ramps and more accessible seating
  • Accessible box office and concessions booths
  • Modified stage and work areas for artists, company members, and staff
  • Improved building and wayfinding signage
  • New facade of reclaimed redwood from decommissioned water tanks across New York City
  • Water protection and drainage systems to reduce flooding and improve water mitigation
  • Newly designed lighting towers

The 2025 season will bring Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night to life. The play follows twins, Sebastian and Viola, separated after a shipwreck and all that ensues thereafter. Tony Award nominee, Saheem Ali, will be directing the production as only the initial casting has been revealed so far. Learn more on Public Theater’s website.

New York City Has Plans To Expand The High Line

Gansevoort Square is getting completely reimagined as New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) President and CEO Andrew Kimball announce the future vision to transform 66,000 square feet into affordable housing, new retail space, and a chance to expand the Whitney Museum of American Art and the High Line.

Located in the Meatpacking District, on Little West 12th Street between Washington Street and 10th Avenue, Gansevoort Square’s redevelopment is part of Mayor Adams’ “Manhattan Plan” to add 100,00 new homes within the borough over the next 10 years.

Included in the Request For Proposals, Gansevoort Square will strive to achieve a goal of 50% affordable units out of the 600 new mixed-income housing to be created, in addition to ground-floor retail space. Furthermore, the NYCEDC outlines that this project should generate approximately $940 million in economic impact and could bring the opportunity to expand not only the Whitney Museum of American Art but the beloved elevated park, the High Line.

NYCEDC President and CEO Andrew Kimball said:

The redevelopment of Gansevoort Square marks a transformative milestone for the city by delivering much-needed mixed-income housing, creating more open space, while supporting beloved institutions like the High Line and the Whitney Museum.

Moreover, the mighty project will bring 2,600 construction jobs and 160 permanent jobs to NYC.

As part of the next steps, applications from qualified parties can be submitted through April 30th, 2025 for proposals for the below-market residential units without public subsidy under the RFP guidelines.

“We are building a new, exciting chapter in Manhattan to make our city more affordable and the best place to raise a family,” added Mayor Eric Adams. Learn more on the city press release.
