An Arctic Airmass Will Be Suspended Over NYC For Most Of The Week

After receiving a second snowfall this weekend, a cold wave will remain in NYC as an arctic airmass will persist over regions through most of the week, according to the National Weather Service.

The NYC Emergency Management issued a winter weather alert on Sunday, January 19th through Monday, January 20th. Though the city is no longer under any weather alert, warning, or advisory, frigid temperatures are expected to continue on throughout the week. Temperature lows will remain in the teens until Sunday.

However, the real kicker in this cold wave comes down to wind chill. From yesterday into early Wednesday, wind chills are estimated to range between 0 to -10°F.

NWS warns New Yorkers to be aware that poorly insulated pipes are at risk of freezing/bursting. Moreover, prolonged periods outside could lead to frostbite or hypothermia.

If you live in a residential building, remember that building owners are legally mandated when the outdoor temperatures are below 55°F to maintain indoor temperatures at 68°F during the day. If they are not complying with the required temperatures, tenants should notify the building owner or super before making an official complaint through 311.

Prior to this weekend’s storm, NYC had already faced four snow events this winter, utilizing tens of millions of pounds of salt and hundreds of thousands of gallons of brine.

Stay safe, NYC. And while winter continues to rage, at least make the most of it by checking out our ultimate winter bucket list.
