Ajike Ownes being laid to rest, Sharpton to deliver eulogy

The funeral for shooting victim Ajike “AJ” Owens is being held Monday in Ocala, Fla. Rev Al Sharpton will deliver her eulogy.

Owens, a 35-year-old Black woman and single mother of four, was fatally shot by a 58-year-old white woman last week, who was her neighbor.

On June 2, Owens’ children were playing in a field next to an Ocala apartment complex when Susan Louise Lorincz reportedly began yelling at them to get off her land and calling them racial slurs.

The children left but accidentally left an iPad behind, which Lorincz took. After Owens’ children informed her of what happened, she walked across the street with her kids to speak with Lorincz. She knocked on the door, and at that point, Lorincz allegedly shot through the door, hitting AJ, who later died from her injuries.

Lorincz has since been arrested on charges of manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery and two counts of assault by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

Attorney Ben Crump, who is representing her family, will issue a national call for justice as both leaders demand reforms at Owens’ funeral
