AAFCA honors cinematic excellence at 7th annual special achievement awards luncheon

The African American Film Critics Association held its annual luncheon celebrating cinematic Black excellence at the 7th Annual AAFCA Special Achievement Awards on Sunday, Mar. 3, hosted at the Los Angeles Athletic Club in downtown Los Angeles.

Guests at the event included Skye P. Marshall, Boris Kodjoe, Roxanne Avent, Jonathan Majors, Meagan Good, and Isaac G. Bryan.

A highlight of the ceremony was a presentation by Courtney B. Vance, Nia Long, and Jurnee Smollett to Jamie Foxx and Datari Turner of the AAFCA’s Producers Award. The dynamic duo, renowned for their work through Foxxhole Productions, received recognition for their contributions to three films of 2023: “They Cloned Tyrone,” “Story Ave,” and “The Burial.” The award lauded Foxxhole’s commitment to showcasing inclusive narratives.

Choreographer Fatima Robinson received AAFCA’s Salute to Excellence Award, presented by Black List founder Franklin Leonard. Robinson was celebrated for her contributions to choreography, notably her work on “The Color Purple.”

A poignant moment ensued as the late Michael Latt, founder of Lead With Love, was honored posthumously with the inaugural Freedom Award, established in his honor and recognizing Latt’s legacy as an exceptional marketing strategist and thought leader. His family accepted the honor on his behalf.

Filmmaker Deon Taylor received the Horizon Award, which spotlights and celebrates rising talent. Tyrese Gibson and Hillary Swank presented the award to Taylor, known for his groundbreaking work with the Hidden Empire Film Group and directing genre-bending thrillers like “Chain Letter” and “Traffik”. Taylor’s upcoming projects include “Free Agents” for Tristar and biopics about civil rights activist and congressmember John Lewis and boxer Floyd Mayweather.

Finally, Delta Air Lines was recognized with AAFCA’s Film Advocate Award for their unwavering commitment to diversity in entertainment, both aboard Delta flights and in their embrace of emerging filmmakers through their programming. The Stanley & Karen Kramer Social Justice Award was bestowed on the film “Killers of the Flower Moon,” acknowledging its powerful portrayal of the true story behind the infamous Osage Nation murders.
