A State-Of-The-Art Education Center Opens This Weekend At The Brooklyn Museum
With colder temperatures kicking in, there’s no better time than this winter to check out the newly renovated education center opening at the Brooklyn Museum, named after philanthropist, collector, and curator Toby Devan Lewis.
The 9,500-square-foot space will welcome curious visitors beginning Saturday, January 27th. It intends to foster community building and connectivity among museum goers of all ages.
It’s complete with three studios and high-tech audiovisual systems and LED lighting. Various classes and programming will be held within the space regarding arts education and community engagement.
One of Toby Devan Lewis Education Center’s most esteemed features will be the gallery space that will host rotating family-friendly installations.
The inaugural show is Artland: An Installation by Do Ho Suh and Children, by artist Do Ho Suh. On view from January 27–May 5, 2024, the exhibition is a “fantastical ecosystem” conjured up by Do Ho Suh and his two daughters. Nontoxic clay depicts a world where gender ceases to exist and no government or monarchy are at play. Colorful plants and creatures add vivacious life to this alternate universe.
Additionally, 4,600 square feet of space will be dedicated to the Museum’s education staff. This includes specific spaces for teen staff and museum guides.
“The Brooklyn Museum has a long tradition of providing arts education for diverse audiences across the borough and beyond,” said Adjoa Jones de Almeida, Deputy Director for Learning and Social Impact. “This renovation has been many years in the making. We’re so excited to offer Brooklynites and visitors from all walks of life beautiful spaces where they can connect and nurture their creative potential—where everyone is an artist.”
During opening weekend, visitors will be able to take advantage of tons of free events, from art-making and music, to giveaways and artist talks. Plus, on Sunday, January 28th, the museum will celebrate the Lunar New Year during a special edition popular art series from 2-4pm.
