A Pre-Valentine’s Day Snowstorm May Be Heading To NYC Next Week

Though an early spring is on its way and it’s going to be abnormally warm in NYC this Super Bowl weekend, us New Yorkers know how finicky the city weather can be, and that’s clearly going to be shown at the tail end of this month.

According to NYC’s upcoming forecasts, it may be time for New Yorkers to dust off our snow shovels as we’re potentially gearing up to get thrown right back into a frigid winter.

AccuWeather meteorologists are closely monitoring a storm that has the potential to bring a pre-Valentine’s Day snowstorm to parts of the Midwest to the Northeast early next week.

AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Paul Pastelok says its due to an area of high pressure brewing in the western US that will cause a split in the jet stream–when the high pressure and jet stream split collide, it creates ideal conditions for considerable snowfall.

Saturday, February 10th is going to be 59ºF–only 2ºF less than the record high temp of 61ºF–but come Sunday, February 11th temperatures are already going to jump on a downward spiral.

By Tuesday, February 13th, temperatures will drop down to 40ºF with the potential for an impactful snowstorm that could slow travel.

Where and how much snow is expected to fall will depend on the storm’s strength, which may fluctuate, and the storm’s track, which may shift north and south over the next several days.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Dean DeVore stated:

While the January thaw and break from the stormy pattern extended into early February, there is going to be a change in the pattern with a potentially impactful storm coming swinging across the Midwest and Northeastern states from Monday to Tuesday.

And, as February carries on, the chances of seeing substantial snow will only increase–particularly around Sunday, February 18th and through at least the second week of March.

DeVore added:

A ‘word to the wise,’ enjoy the next 10 days or so, because some winter cold and winter-type weather will likely come back into play for the Eastern U.S. prior to and even beyond Valentine’s Day for the second half of February.

On the bright side, the first day of spring is Tuesday, March 19th!
