This Map Compares The Size Of The Los Angeles Fires To NYC & Other U.S. Locations
The Los Angeles fires have been burning since January 7th, 2025, causing massive ruin and heartache in their wake.
At the time of publication, over 12,3000 structures and roughly 40,000 acres — which is comparable in size to Washington D.C. — have been destroyed. Though the horrific emergency has made international news, grasping the fires’ scope is not necessarily discernible to people who are unfamiliar with the California area.
This map scales the size of the Los Angeles fires to other U.S. locations
To help people understand how encompassing the destruction has been, Jeremia Kimelman of Cal Matters created a map that compares the L.A. fires — Palisades, Easton, and Hurst — to locations across the U.S. By typing in a neighborhood, address, or zip code, site visitors are able to visualize how the fire would affect their city in terms of size.

Once the scope is featured in site visitors’ native areas, it becomes incredibly clear just how widespread the devastation in California has been.
Representatives from Cal Matters indicate that the images in this post are a comparison of fire size based on a several different locations, and does not indicate the exact location of any of these fires. Should visitors need, Cal Matters’ wildfire tracker has up-to-date information about the location of active fires in the area.
