PATH Fares Increase, Surpassing The Price Of A MetroCard Swipe
Since 2023, PATH train passengers have been paying less for a one-way fare than NYC subway commuters, but this is no longer the case. As of January 12th, 2025, Port Authority recently increased one-way fares on the PATH from $2.75 (a price that’s held since 2014) to $3. Therefore, riding on the PATH is now more expensive than paying the $2.90 subway fare—though the MTA has plans to match it with a subway fare hike on its way this summer.
The PATH recently introduced TAPP, a contactless payment method allowing riders to seamlessly pay fares via their card or smart device.
This system has been installed in every station. If you pay fares with either a MetroCard or SmartLink, you will need to use a non-TAPP turnstile. MTA OMNY cards are not a valid form of payment on the PATH.
PATH Fares as of January 12th, 2025:

The PATH rail system is more than a century-old. Therefore, it’s getting a $430 million investment from Port Authority and New Jersey to continue modernization efforts. Improvements in the PATH Forward program include track repair and replacements, station rehabilitation and more.
